Can this Inspiration sketch work in my kitchen?

Hi all. Could you take a look and tell me what you think?

Note: the corner I am still debating between keeping a super susan or blocking off the dead space and just having drawers. I realize that may effect my goal of symmetry on this wall. Susan's take up a foot on either side of the corner right?

I am trying to achieve:

Where it says pantry I have a corner - where it says dining room it's our mudroom entrance.

My kitchen dimensions (this is from the designer - the DW is actually on the other side of the sink, he drew it as a place holder only):

Can I do it on a smaller scale and still have it functional?
My wall dimension is 9'3". The housplan shows a wall on the otherside of the fridge but we are opting for a fridge end panel which should give us a couple more inches. MW width is 21.75".

1) Would you have the MW cabinet 18" depth centered between 2 standard depth uppers Ã¯Â¿Â½ so it would stick out farther over the counter top over 24" base cabinets? Is that not enough clearance? I donÃ¯Â¿Â½t see this space as being a prep area at all. Maybe landing or staging for food removed from MW and fridge. This is the easiest solution but is it the best one?

I am planning on prep at the island or the right of the stove in front of the window. I know the island space isn't spacious but I can't make it any bigger. It is what it is.

Does anyone have an 18" upper over 24" lowers that they could share a picture of?

2) Or would you have the MW cabinet 18" depth recessed into the wall to keep them all flush? Behind that wall is the pantry so the space is available.

How difficult is it to recess just one lone cabinet?

I need to decide how this wall needs to be framed and I donÃ¯Â¿Â½t know enough about framing to make a good decision! I suppose I could ask the framerÃ¯Â¿Â½Ã¯Â¿Â½but IÃ¯Â¿Â½d like to sound somewhat intelligent about it before doing so.

I'm a function over form person and would keep the super susan as they are so functional, even if it meant I'd have to sacrifice the symmetry in the cabinetry next to the fridge.

Bickybee, The hood is the 36" Futuro Futuro Galaxy Island Hood. You're right that it's not too imposing. I love the way it looks. I gave up my six-burner for a four-burner mostly because of the Stages sink but also because a 36" stove would have needed a 48" hood. That would have been way too big for the space. Now about how it works. It does a great job with smells. It's somewhat loud when I crank it up to max (for wok cooking) but at the lower levels it's not bad at all. My husband is very sound sensitive and he hasn't complained about it. It's okay with grease. It keeps the grease from behind the cooktop but there is still some around the burners and the stainless piece in front of the burners. But to be honest, I've never had a good hood before (in the original kitchen there was no hood) and so I don't know how much grease the best hood in the world is supposed to pick up. When I was doing hood research (my least favorite part of the kitchen remodel), I spoke with Trevor at Eurostoves about hoods and he said that island hoods just don't work as well as the standard ones because they have a larger capture area. The main thing with any hood is to turn it on about 10 minutes before you'll need it. Oh, the halogen lights work perfectly and the baffles are easy to remove and clean in the dishwasher. Would I do it again? You bet. It works well enough for me and I think that it adds to the kitchen. Hope that helps you. Law- I understand about wanting the cooktop and ovens close together! It is much easier, than hauling hot pans around the kitchen (and dodging kids in the process LOL). Here's another idea. If you're using a CD fridge, why not take advantage of that depth and put it closer to your work area? I put the fridge next to the door to the deck (close to the table and easy for kids to grab drinks). You still have the beautiful bump out window (for light and herbs) with the sink centered underneath. I put the dishwasher between the fridge and sink, but others might like it better on the other side. Whatever you decide, have you thought of DW drawers, rather than a raised DW? It gives you the standard countertop height, but a quick load can be put in the top drawer. If bending over is a problem, maybe a DW drawer on either side of your sink, with the trash moved to the island? The cooktop is now on the other wall, facing the kitchen table, where you can really see the backsplash and decorative elements. The ovens are on the wall to the dining room, with a nice countertop/landing space, next to them. I left your pull-out, since it brings the oven doors over to a better area, not right in the doorway. The doors to the dining room are moved over a bit, and the desk/storage area is smaller, but still there. On the island, you could put a prep sink, if you like, or use it more for a work area. It's really up to you. Same thing with the microwave. You could put one in the island, but with younger kids, you might want the kind that locks. For me, I also have back trouble at times (so literally feel your pain) so I'm planning to have one oven with the cooktop (or range) and one raised oven with the microwave over it. I have this oven/microwave set up now...and I really like it. Hope this gives you some more ideas for your kitchen! Oh, and sorry this is kind of rough...still getting used to paint, but hopefully you get the idea :)

that is a fantastic table. Remember Mama-Gose did a great conversion to marble top table. I do not think her table had the fancy bottom like your inspiration picture. My landing table has a pretty leg and bottom. Hehehehehe It is considered a small library table. I sold a HUGE library table when we moved to Idaho. It would not fit on the truck and made a good profit on it. It was 5 1/2 foot and wonderful turned legs and cross piece. I raised up the desk I used for island with casters and as crazy as it seems it did not travel around like you would think. I miss my island but have a peninsula here so that works and my island serves as another base cabinet.

Are you under a firm deadline, other than convenience in not living with and in a work site any longer than necessary? Are you OK with setting up a minimalist kitchen function for the duration? (keep and move old fridge to another room, get some hotplates or portable induction cookers - at least one maybe two, MW, biggish toaster oven, rice cooker and washing your dishes in a PR sink - using a counter made of plywood on sawhorses?) Could you get through the holidays with such a set-up? It really depends on your tolerance for camping out in your own house and how frustrating you will find juggling children and tradesman (many of the same management/coping skills apply, but don't try shoving a pacifier at the electrician). Whatever time frame you come up with, imagine how it would be if it took exactly twice as long. Would that throw larger family plans into a tailspin? Because that very well may come to pass. Still, GCing one project, and your own at that where your won't have trouble communicating your ideas because they will all be in your own brain, seems like it is possible. Are your kids and DH the flexible, roll-with-it types? Or does change destabilize them? What does your Mama think? My own Mother GC'd the building of her house when she was in her 60's. I know I spent a lot of time on the phone with her as she vented about the days' progress (or lack thereof). I thought it was great that she did it, but I think if I had had doubts my doubts would have discouraged her and made it harder. Also, get several more bids before you give up. The Official Kitchen Industry is awash in price gouging in some places because it is an emotional purchase, dealing with aspirations, expensive equipment most people only buy occasionally and mysterious systems (water, electricty and drains), etc. Also, try breaking it apart into sequential episodes to see if you can make it work that way. You're trying to force a symmetrical focal point on a wall that isn't built to handle it. Focus on function on that wall, and if you've got to have a focal point, the range wall should provide that. I'd skip doing a to the counter cabinet on that range wall and just focus on symmetry in the uppers.

Then maybe put in an inexpensive china hutch to the left from Craig's List to handle the needed dish storage. Paint it up in a color, and you've saved thousands.

Okay okay holly - time to let go of the dream. ;)

I do want function I really do - but I like symmetry too and I guess it's just not going to happen!

I don't think the cab down to the counter is costing me that much - it's a 'standard' cupboard. I was hoping to store ALL everyday dishes and glasses in there right across from the dishwasher - that's why I chose it. I saw it as a major function aspect.

However - I realize that it also kills my symmetry on that wall as well. I was trying to get it on at least one wall but maybe it doesn't matter.

I guess my focal point could be the windows and not so much the cabinets surrounding.

Any advice on the MW besides putting in in a base cab?

Why not? I'd recess the microwave and have shallow cabinets on the pantry side...for canned goods. The balanced cabinet you drew is lovely and I don't understand why it won't work?

Couldn't you have one of those swing out doors on the range side, to access that back corner, for extra storage, rather than the lazy susan? I've seen those on the forum several times.

I'd be tempted to slide the range wall/window area towards the fridge just a bit, so you'd have fewer uppers on the right side of the windows and a larger upper/hutch storage on the left. You could have a cabinet next to the corner access, for bulky pots and then two sets of drawers to the left of the range.

Since you should definitely (LOL) put the stools on two sides of the island, I think it might look better anyway, if the range was over just a bit...and you would have the hutch storage you really want :)
