Wood countertop issues...need owners and designers ideas

I've had my heart set on a wood top for my peninsula and thought everybody was on board when suddenly the other day the GC realized that the wood would abut the rangetop; he says there is a code restriction and that I have to have a 3" non-flammable surround around the rangetop...has anyone else encountered this? My rangetop is at the end of the peninsula against a wall so no way to have stone continue around it; it seems to me a 3 inch stone surround is going to look very silly there.

And, then, after this came up, suddenly the KD and cabinetmaker are raising doubts about whether I want to put hot pans down on wood. For years, I've been putting hot pans on my cutting board in order to avoid putting them on tile but of course the cutting board did not have a finish on it. Is this really an issue? Experience wood countertop owners?

Thanks!
