GE Profile/Cafe/Monogram Handle Swapping?
Comments (3)There's a whole thread about doing this! With elaborate how-to instructions and photos. I'm considering the same thing. The European-style Monogram door is reasonably compatible appearance-wise with the Cafe line (though the handle is thinner), and the whole door can be swapped onto the substantially less expensive Profile Advantium, and is amazingly inexpensive as a part (the complete door assembly can be had for well under $100). The "pro-style" door protrudes more from the body of the oven than the other two styles, though the handle is nicer and even more like the Cafe handle. Don't know if the handles are interchangable if you keep the doors, or for that matter if a handle from a 30"w electric Cafe wall oven will fit on an Advantium door. Comments (19)Malhgold, the cabinets are from Ultracraft in red birch with a Golden stain. I do not have the Trivection. The oven is the Monogram ZET1SLSS, which the OP was asking about way back when (but it wasn't installed yet when the question was first posted). I'm really happy with the oven. Seems to pre-heat quickly, love those full extension racks, and love the feel of the knobs (they click softly as you turn the dial). The display and the timer function is simple and intuitive. Baking seems very even, Fan reasonably quiet. Interior light illuminates the whole oven well, and stays on the whole time oven is running (you can't control the interior light). At first that bugged me, but now I realize that I am less likely to forget to turn the oven off when I am done. The Advantium has a steep learning curve, and at first I was not thrilled, but now that I am getting the hang of it, I am liking it much better. I re-heated garlic bread tonight with cheese on top, and it came out perfect! Fresh, crispy, restaurant quality. Better than my old toaster oven could do. It took 7-8 minutes, though. Not as speedy as I thought a speed oven would be. I suspect the 240 advantium is quicker. I guess I am just impatient. No pre-heat time required, so it was better than the big oven or broiler would have been for this task. I did frozen chicken tenders for the kids last night, and they were relatively quick (8 min I think), and came out great. The microwave only function is very easy to use - my favorite is the express start button. Hit it once and it starts, with 30 sec on the timer. Hit it again and it adds 30 sec increments. Or turn the dial after it starts to add or subtract time in any amount you want. Very easy! I also like the sensor re-heat feature. It tells you when your food is piping hot, but not burned - no guessing. As a plain microwave it is not as powerful as my old microwave - but not too bad. I really need to play with it some more. I find it a PITA to change the trays when going from speed cook to microwave, though. And the fan on the Advantium is fairly noisy. Minor annoyances. I picked the Monogram over the Profile just for looks. The handles matched my hardware better, and I liked the square face, not curved. Snowy, I was told the same thing, that the only diff betw the Monogram and Profile versions of the 120 advantium was the look (and the price!) Same appliance, different face. Comments (26)Don't like the knob? That's funny. I love the knob. It almost always does what I expect it to. I hit the quick microwave button: 30 seconds on the time and it turns on. I can flick the knob to add or subtract time on the clock any time before it finishes. (Peek inside. "5" "4" Hmm, not bubbling yet. Spin knob. "3" "4,5,6,7,8,9,10" "9" "8") So handy! I'm making grilled cheese sandwiches (which the Advantium does perfectly), Press "speedcook." spin dial to "sandwiches" and push dial to select. Spin to "cheese" and press. Spin to "1-2 sandwiches" and press. Press one last time to start. Easy, obvious, and soooo much better that poking at those gawdawful membrane buttons that most machines use. Set the timer? Press the 'timer" button. Spin knob to number of minutes, and press. Spin knob for seconds. Press. I can flick the edge of the knob and zing! I've got 40+ seconds dialed in, in a flash. Comments (16)Okay, four tests for cheese toast in the Monogram Pro Advantium 240V: 1) Microwave. Not toast. Bread on a plate. Just like any kind of microwaved cheese bread. Very melty, bread soft and kind of sticky wet on the bottom. Tastes good if you like gooey. 2) Oven. Toast setting. Rack from toaster oven on metal tray. No preheat. The Advantium just sucks at toasting. The bread gets very dry and doesn't caramelize (brown). It gets hard and dry rather than toasty. The cheese didn't melt as fast as the bread cooked. I gave it extra time, which made the cheese okay, but further dried the bread, still without browning. Not a good outcome. 3) Oven. Toast setting. Rack. Preheat. Preheat took something like 10 minutes. The bread still didn't caramelize, though the cheese started to turn brown and hard by the time I pulled it out (browned bread is good toast, browned cheese is overcooked and means the texture has gone off, though small spots of it can be nice on a complex dish). Good crunch to the crust and far better than the no preheat version, but still not toasty. Make do. Not horrible. Not really good though. Better than poor, but not really fair. 4) Speed oven. Rack. I'm not an expert with speed settings so I go with the menu. There's a cheese bread setting for whole loaves and frozen slices, but I think it's talking about some kind of prepared product, not a slice of cheddar on a slice of bread, which is what I have. That leaves "garlic bread" and "Texas toast". I'm thinking garlic bread is more about melting the topping and leaving the bread as is, so I choose Texas toast, which also has a 1-2 slice fresh setting. It stops with a minute left to be turned over, so I just turn it back on. As it's finishing the set time, I can see the cheese bubbling all over and that it's just at that tasty doneness before it starts burning (i.e., going brown). I was right about the cheese. It was just right. Very flavorful without losing its texture. The crust was crunchy, though not as crunchy as the toast version. The bottom of the bread was dried out a bit the way it is on the toast setting but not as much, and the inside was much moister and warmer. I'd rate this fair to good. There's potential that with experimentation it could make it all the way to good. Not sure about if it could make it to great. Because the bread gets so dry, the rack doesn't seem to give an advantage. You could just as easily use the grill pan, and that might even be better unless it makes it sticky and mushy. I've used the grill pan on the toast setting before and it didn't allow the underside to toast, which is why I suggested the rack. What I think I've learned is that the problem with toasting in the Advantium is the convection. It's too windy, which pulls the moisture out of the bread and doesn't allow enough surface heat to caramelize. The rack didn't help in that case because the wind is cooling the bread as much as heating it. I think the other speed ovens, which are supposed to toast better, have a direct radiant heat element like a regular oven. I'm sorry I don't have a better answer for you. Since you eat your cheese toast daily, I'd guess you like it the way you currently make it. The Advantium may not do it for you. OTOH, if the toaster oven doesn't give you truly great results and you just like cheese toast, you might be able to find a speed setting that works well enough for your satisfaction. The Texas toast setting was acceptable, and you can adjust the proportions of different heat applications and all to your heart's content....See Morea2gemini
