Kentucky-Derby -Lost but what an experience!
Comments (16)I must say all of you make me very emotional. I feel like you are all my friends, how very nice of you to give me all these compliments but if it werent for all of you, I would have bought an inappropriate dress. Let me explain a little. First we got to the derby at noon, it was cold, damp and rainy, but I felt good about our horse, my hat and outfit so I just said I was going to make the best of it. My husband was a little crabby guess it was nerves, most of the men were stressed. We were going up the elevator and as I said this sweet girl wanted to take my picture but my husband was kind of rushing me said the lady was trying to sell me something. I just ignored him. When we finally came home he went on the site and found me, I hadnt had time to view it because my kids were over and we just put our 3 yr old granddaughter to bed it was her birthday today. I'm so happy I was able to have this experience and wanted to share the excitment with anyone who wanted to be a part of it. I havent had time to download the pictures but I cant wait to show you the picture of Pete and I holding a trophy. That was truly amazing. Cant imagine if MI won the derby. He isnt hurt there is a picture in the Kentucky newpaper that shows him about 4th around the first turn and Rajiv was turning looking behind him, could have been that time he should have been looking forward. No excuses, we must move on, the best horse won. We are not sure if he will be entered into the Preakness, I'll let you know. Meanwhile hopefully I can download the pictures. The hat was beautiful! I got compliments all day long, even men came up to me, it was comfortable and different and didnt see one like it, although I must say there were many many beautiful hats, especially where I was sitting. One of the partner's wives bought one for 750.00. It was a silk overlay and fitted perfectly for her head. I was just as happy with mine, bought it for 200. Thanks again, I cant wait to show you the rest of the pictures. Oh Hi Moonshadow, of course I remember you - you helped so much with my house. Talk to all of you soon....See MoreMy husband just lost his dad
Comments (4)I have been trying to help my husband. He hasn't shown any grief since the day he had to see his father's body at the funeral home. At the funeral he was the only dry-eyed person. I have been doing everything around the house, and anything I can think of to make things easier on him. But I am about ready to snap. NOt at him but at the insensitivity of other people. It is crazy. First, the my FIL's sister (in her 50's) posted an invite to his funeral on facebook. It was supposed to be a private family graveside service because my husband's mother is in a very fragile state right now. It was such a shock and she is not doing well. So two days before the funeral it is found out that his family now has to get together enough food to feed about 50 ppl because my FIL's sister invited all these people to the service and get together afterward. They did NOT need the extra stress of having to do this!! And a simple thing- my parents decided to send flowers my MIL's house even though they really don't know her. My mother asked ME to send them (because I could pick out something she'd like I guess) so I called a local florist and asked that the flowers be delivered to the house on the day of the funeral. The florist calls me back the day of the funeral to say they couldn't get the flowers I wanted in that day so they would be delivered the next day. I didn't want to argue so I said ok. There are more important things. But then I get another call that evening saying the flowers wouldnt' be delivered until TWO days after the funeral. I spoke with the owner who was VERY rude. When I said the flowers were for a funeral he corrected me and said "No they are not for a funeral, they are being delivered to a home address." Yes, dumbass but they have a sympathy card with them. He then asked what the address was even though I'd already given it to the person who took the order previously. He went on to say it wasn't his fault (I wasn't even upset at this point) that his supplier was late and all he could do was have me select another arrangement and he "Might" be able to deliver it by the next day. I found another florist and called him back and asked him to cancel the order. He said he'd already made arrangements to get the flowers I needed (still two days late) and I told him I just wanted to cancel the order please and he said whatever and hung up on me!! Stupid, but I just broke down crying. And at the service, the strangest thing was that my MIL did not want to watch her husband's urn be buried in the dirt (her kids and grandkids wanted to watch) and I definately don't blame her. She is still thinking of him as a person who is alive or has characteristics of being alive and to see that would just kill me. She started bawling and told everyone she had to get out of there and NOT one of her kids escorted her away. MY FIL's sister who posted the thing on facebook took her away. It also seems that my MIL does not want to hear any good things about her husband from anyone. SHe is very angry toward him (probably for leaving her alone) and if anything nice is said she gets mad. So I say nothing. I just don't know what to do....See MoreCalling all owners of white (painted) cabinets!!! Help needed!!!
Comments (27)For what it's worth, while we don't have white cabinets, we have white everything else in our house---all painted with BM oil-based paint. I spent this weekend battling with it to try to get some spots patched---got new paint, same color, in water-based. Big mistake---different finish, different color! Happily I managed to dig up one last can of oil-based in the basement. I'd go with oil-based or lacquer for kitchen cabinets. So I can say: - Oil-based *does* yellow. Unfortunately for us, we love the yellowed color since it turns the shade into a creamy white---the original mix is too white! Oh, well. - The oil-based finish is (I think) easier to clean and wipe down. I couldn't get the water-based to a finish I was happy with. - White does show dirt, which is probably really only an issue if you have kids and/or pets. Our dog is the biggest offender because he likes to rest his head on window sills, and those get gross. Less of an issue in the kitchen, though. I wipe it down in the problem spots periodically, and occasionally put some touchup paint on. - If the paint chips, you can sometimes see the patch if you look closely. I don't think it's that big a deal, though. - The adjustment thing depends in part on your house and your climate. We do have problems with some of our doors and casework, but it's mostly as a result of an old house settling and things swelling in rainy season, not of the paint per se. (My parents have similar issues in New England with their stained inset cabinets from a relatively costly custom cabinet company.) We're still getting flush inset in the kitchen though---we just know what to watch for. A good cabinetmaker should be able to do flush inset with clearances that will accommodate that with minimal adjusting. We did go with frameless for our most frequently used cabinets for that reason, though. Hope that helps somewhat!...See MoreCorian lovers/owners, can we talk?
Comments (161)Thought some more about this overnight. My dad was a dentist. Also built his own dental office. Corian everywhere. I have health issues, including a couple of surgeries. When you go to the doctor, or the hospital, Corian everywhere. Until I read this thread, I never really thought about why. I worked in a hospital 40 years ago, if I recall correctly, stainless steel was the thing then. It's all about keeping things clean. We have hard water, as do most people in the USA. Did not realize that hard water affects stone. I have never cut directly on a countertop, it will ruin your knives. I have never put a hot pot on a countertop and have no desire to do so. We do put hot pots in the sink, pour boiling water in the sink, so I am going to need a steel or enamel sink. Want a farmhouse sink anyway. This has been a very thought provoking discussion. Learned a lot....See Moreeandhl
