Kitchen Cabinets - Paint, Stain or leave alone?
Comments (0)Thank you so much for all of your beautiful examples this site has truly been inspirational to me! I have been lurking for a while, taking in all of the beautiful kitchen improvements that have been created. I could really use some help from those who have been there! To make a long story short, we made some changes to this kitchen when I moved into it 5 years ago. It was so bad that I just wanted CHANGE, but did not have a budget to change everything and was in such a hurry to change it that I didnt really think a lot about any of before doing it! Here is what we completed in the first year We removed the pink and blue wallpaper and painted the walls, removed the kitchen carpet (gross!) and replaced with laminate floor, replaced the almond colored appliances with black and stainless, replaced hardware on the cabinets, replaced the rectangular fluorescent light fixture over the island and added a few recessed lights, replaced the blue and pink speckled, wood trimmed countertops with laminate "faux granite" ones and tore out 3 plate glass windows to make a sliding door and built a deck outside of that. We later added a backsplash and just last month, we replaced the island with a longer custom island that has roll-out shelves and functional drawers. We put a granite countertop on the island. We are very happy with how the island turned out. Here is where I need some help. I am ready to make changes to the cabinets but again we are on a small budget and dont want to spend thousands to make just a cosmetic change on this house that we plan to be in for only about 5 more years. My first thoughts are to paint the cabinets a lighter color and just leave the countertops as they are. This would still give a contrast to the island countertop and would contrast the cabinets with the darker island. Since the cabinets are oak, I know this is going to take an intense method of sanding, priming, sanding, priming, sanding, painting and painting again. We are willing to do this but have also thought about having some MDF doors made and just painting those. This would eliminate some of the sanding and would also allow us to have the doors made with full overlay so that we could remove the center stile on some of the cabinets. I have attached photo of our kitchen before the island was added. Trying to figure out how to add a second photo with the new island! Hoping I can get some suggestions for painting the existing doors versus custom MDF doors and also suggestions for wall colors. The kitchen opens up into a great room, so we would probably extend the wall color all the way into that room. The end of the kitchen where the counters and cabinets are does not get a lot of natural light, so were hoping whatever we do will help make it all look a little lighter. We are not completely opposed to also replacing those counter tops with something solid but we dont want to replace the backsplash, so we need something that will work with that. Can you help?? Comments (11)hlove and lazygardens - it is so eye opening and interesting to look at your own place through another's eyes. I see things that I never saw before! The plates for instance. When I go back and look at them, I see exactly what you mean. They looked just fine to me before and now I can't wait to get home and move them around of replace them LOL. Do you mean the valance at the window when you say take that down? That window previously had nothing and added that a few months ago thinking it might soften it so I added this roman shade but can see that it probably adds to the darkness. I alreay have under counter lights - I didn't think to turn them on for these photos. They are on their own switches for energy saving reasons. I actually planned for adding glass to some of the upper doors even if I was going to paint. hlove mentioned removing the soffit and I'm going to check to see if that space on one side is hollow or not. Would I just add some wide molding to the upper parts of the cabinet. I am definitely planning to lighten up the paint and may go with something creamy - worried to go with too much yellow in it because of the yellowness of the cabinets - what do you think?...See MoreReplacing cooktop with larger cooktop in granite countertop?
Comments (17)Another choice for the OP is to purchase a 30" rangetop instead of a new 36" cooktop. A rangetop provides more cooking real estate than a cooktop because the knobs are not taking up room on the cooking surface. It won't give her 6 burners, but a rangetop will allow all 4 burners to be used with larger pans at the same time, which is not what a 4-burner cooktop will allow. Not many people actually use 6 burners at once, but the extra elbow room is appreciated. A choice of a rangetop will also be an easier installation, as the cutout is simply the 30" width, and not some specific measurements that are unique to a specific cooktop. And finally, the upper cabinets can remain the same, with no issue of a 36" cooking surface under combustible materials. The only downside is that the OP will have to lose the drawer directly under the cooktop, in order to fit a rangetop. That is still a smaller price to pay compared to reconfiguring the upper cabinets in order to avoid a fire hazard. You can find a less-expensive 30" rangetop at a scratch-and-dent or display sale, or on Craig's List....See MoreMy new under cabinet lighting visible while sitting in my adjoining fa
Comments (40)Update Spoke to builder and he prefers these since they are longer lasting bulbs. They are led but use regular wire. He feels they provide better task lighting and less failure. The tape lighting sticky tap moves (which a friend has and it does unstick)He suggested I try a strip led light and see how I like it. I picked Your friend has shared a link to a Home Depot product they think you would be interested in seeing. 16 ft. White Indoor LED Tape Light w/remote (Plug-in or direct wire) https://www.homedepot.com/p/307883100 It seems that there are a bunch of tiny dots vs several bulbs. The diffuser doesn’t seem to hide the dots. It’s a very stark white vs the lights I have is warmer. He can change them for no cost. He said the tape lights are cheaper than what he installed. It would require changing all of the wiring but luckily the countertop is not installed. Either way I still need the light rail. My builder said people had moved away wanting the light rail but he really thinks it finishes the kitchen Anyone have a specific light that they can post with picks showing how it reflects on a shiny countertop. Thank you small!...See MoreCindy103d
