Countertop a requirement next to fridge?
Comments (21)Here is the updated layout plan. There is 62" between where the fridge is and the counter across from it. It's a french door frige, and the pantry will be custom built, to come out to the same depth as the fridge. So, I could have a pull out shelf. The pantry door will have one right return. I was noticing last night the very same thing you guys pointed out - the first 15 inches of counter next to the fridge is useless anyway. I think what I hate worse than anything is that the doors cannot stay open where it is now. And as far as this new layout goes, THANKS to palimpsest, anniewy for pointing out I can put the wall oven below the cooktop, and to bmorepanic for his drawing. I found a Jenn-Air that matches my cooktop. Now I have the safety of not having to walk across the room with hot stuff from the oven. There was NO landing place by the oven before, and I actually think that is more important for safety than having a landing place by the fridge. My family is not happy that there will be no cabinets for getting a glass and just filling it right there. They don't like that they'll have to get one from across the way and walk to the fridge. I told them to get over it. Maybe since the pantry will be bigger, we can store some glasses in it. I still hate the fact that my sink and cooking area can't be along the same wall, but I have to live with that as well. DH says NO to transferring plumbing to the other side of the foundation, and we refuse to lose the sink window. Along the front of the house, there are 4 long, symmetrical windows. We don't want to break that up. Making the kitchen U shape is just not going to happen....See MoreIs there any way to fit a shallow cabinet next to fridge?
Comments (8)Well, that depends on how deep that wall will be. I would suggest checking the specs on your fridge to see how much depth you need to cover the body plus clearance, then see how deep the vanity is (I think 22 inches might be standard counter depth?) then subtract standard wall thickness and see what you have left. There will be plumbing and electric to work around. Here's what's behind my sink, I assume you would have something similar. You can see the two pipes coming up for the sink, and there is also a junction box up higher that isn't in there yet for the light. If you have plumbing above, you might have pipes that run all the way up....See Moreneed help asap. fridge next to wall
Comments (39)You should decide the pantry size by the cab configuration offered as there can be big differences between 18 vs 24, food storage needs, what fits with your island seating and how much counter space is left on that run. It's close enough to the cooking zone that centering it on the aisle shouldn't be the major consideration. Look at the big picture and all the pertinent factors. What are the bottom glass doors on the hutch? Are they drawers? I think it would look better and be more useful as single drawers to mimic the base, reserving glass for the top. Can't tell from the pics, is there a prep sink in the island?...See MoreRange next to fridge?
Comments (32)@beckysharp I understand removing the pantry/closet, but it's one of only two closets we have that's not in a bedroom (it's originally a coat closet) and it's right next to our bathroom (the door you see to the left). It's also the view you see when you walk into our house. When this photo was taken, my husband was standing in our living room, in the doorway leading to the kitchen area. If he were to step back 12 feet, that's our front door. Kitchen renovations are hard when you need to adjust the layout! We are trying to keep the cost as affordable as we can, without making any very major changes to our house. As you can see by the photos above, the kitchen is so small we can barely both stand in it, so keeping this layout is not acceptable. There is a large dining room/family room area that is a blank slate and a part of the same room as the kitchen but I don't see how we can use that area without placing an island in front of the patio door, and without spending a fortune more on cabinets for the other side. We put blue tape down, and it looks like we can fit a 5-6 foot island comfortably while allowing 42 inches of space around. A 6 foot island would stop at the end of the chalkboard wall. We keep our dishes, cups and Pyrex in the uppers....See Moreoldbat2be
