marble backsplash with granite counter?

After almost a year's hiatus (we went on Christmas vacation, got home to a snowstorm and spent a week without workers in the house, and enjoyed having the house to ourselves so much that we never got started again), we are finally getting ready to finish. We have a Jet Mist granite counter, with some movement but not a ton, and I am really tempted by a Carrera marble slab backsplash, just behind the stovetop. Most of the marble backsplash inspiration pictures I can find have marble or white counters too. I don't want to overdo things with two types of stone.

Does anyone happen to have a picture of a marble backsplash with a darker counter? Or with a non-marble counter with movement? DH wants to do white subways throughout the BS and be done with it. I am just craving a little marble slab.

i'm always skeptical or overly cautious about mixing marble and granite, but this combination seems to work. i don't think i'd attempt to do a full slab of marble. just my opinion though. i prefer counters match a full slab backsplash. but give me some credit, i like your virginia mist and i'm not a granite person at all. good luck!

Nice example Kateskouros. It is a very pretty combo. I have soapstone and a carrera that has more tan mixed in. My soapstone has a strong tan vein on one piece and my cabinets are natural cherry. The tan and gray marble works for me.

I think white would be a nice contrast. I've attached a link to a GW member's (kellienoelle) kitchen that used Delicatus granite & a classic white backsplash. Marble place is trying to not have complaints as to how top fits to walls and is disguising it as a "seal" issue. Nonsense. Make 'em fit the top and tile from it. Silicone between top and tile, not grout.

If you have trouble visualizing what you'd like but "know it when you see it", then at this stage you should probably just look at as many stainless / dark cherry kitchens as you can and see which countertops and flooring "grab" you. In my case I knew I wanted simple, natural cherry cabinets and stainless appliances and probably a wood floor, but that was it. Looking at lots of pictures helped me narrow things down, so now I can at least have intelligent conversations with kitchen designers. I'd suggest going over to houzz.com and entering "stainless steel dark cherry kitchen" into their search box and looking through some of the hundreds of results you get. It's a great source of ideas. After you see some you like, you can probably come up with more words to add to the search box to narrow things down. You can also go to google and enter "site:gardenweb.com dark cherry stainless" and you'll find lots of threads on this site too. I don't know of a way to limit it to threads with photos, unfortunately. Laura

@Beth H. - thank you for your comments. I don't think we want to have dark counter tops. The kitchen is open to our family room. The minimal wall space in the kitchen will be painted a light blue color, as will the walls in the family room. We were thinking about: a) white cabinets and island b) the Calacatta gold marble 3" x 6" tiles for the back splash c) light(ish) counter tops on the perimeter and island (perhaps with some grey coming through d) medium brown hardwood floors We thought about using walnut for the island surface, but decided against it due to maintenance issues. If we didn't want to have dark counter tops, are there any other options? Thanks!

I think grey/black counters without tons of movement look wonderful with marble backsplashes. Lots of other lovely Jet Mist granite or soapstone counter/ marble BS combos are shown or linked in this previous thread. It will look great, don't worry!

I think many times a marble bs does not go with the granite, but in your case and several others, it definitely does. Enduring's is a good example. Your granite is mellow enough to pair up with the marble and not compete.

kateskouros - that is so great. I have been debating about using those exact tiles from lowes (can't beat the price!), but was dying to see what they'd actually look like. LOVE it, you guys did a fantastic job. I think I just found my backsplash.

One question for you though : my cabinets are a creamier white actually called Pearl...do you think the tiles read too stark white? The sample I have from Lowe's seems to have some creams mixed in...

Enduring - I love the herringbone...I may try to do herringbone over the range area only, but it looks tricky and I'm an amateur diy -er.
