Need to cover my windows in my kitchen - corner dilemma
Comments (10)As Herbflavor suggests, curtains that would flutter in a breeze would add charm and be a softening feature in a room of rigid elements. These days they're not the usual thing either. You'd be avant garde. One of these days I'll come on line and find that curtains are once again "haute" among the middle classes. I've been watching for some years now, frankly, but only see them in magazines like Elle or House Beautiful or in the occasional commercial. Peculiarly, the kitchen in Something's Gotta Give had curtains, but they were about the only detail not copied adoringly. Just not their time again yet? Could the fact that our 10-year-olds could sew up a set of custom tiers using Grandma's old sewing machine also be a factor in their delay? (The over-unified decor industry is making me very cynical these days. What do shipping containers and the cost of cargo space have to do with all the flat picture frames we see everywhere?) Have fun, Phyl. Your room's lovely, and I do agree that solar shades would be very attractive and functional....See MoreFront room with large windows and fireplace dilemma
Comments (6)I see plenty of room for a desk area. I would probably put the sofa facing the fireplace, similar to how it is in the pictures. And put the two new chairs on either side of the fireplace to make a conversation area. The desk can go in one of three spots - directly behind the sofa, or in either corner behind the sofa. I would want to leave the window uncovered by furniture. It's a pretty window....See MoreKitchen Window Design Dilemma
Comments (12)not meaning to be harsh...but the window looks old. [it looks like some we replaced] are you due for a window replacement.? But the black color is fine if it's not time to replace....[ currently seeing black details in kitchens] . Use of caulk in the small gap....and you can get gray caulk....then paint the drywall and return around the window one or two shades of gray up from your counter and backsplash color. Then proceed with all your details re valance...window treatment..etc. You will not be concerned once the surface is even, gaps minimized, color blends with good primer and paint, and everything gets done. I would vote for window treatment[ nice solar shade or something]...See MoreFront elevation and bathroom window dilemma
Comments (17)We have this issue in our current home! The original windows are high and horizontal/long - they make the house look like it's squinting if that makes sense. We're planning to enlarge both windows that flank the front door, including the bathroom window in our master even though it faces our courtyard (so not exactly visible from the street, but still visible from the front of our house). We're planning to install the same style of wooden shutters used throughout the house (bifold white wooden shutters), but a water-friendly version (assume they are PVC). Planning to keep the lower half closed most of the time to obscure the view into the window from outside while allowing light to come in through the top part. The current windows are reeded glass and I actually hate the look. Our windows, however, are not IN the shower - just in the bathroom. So that might make a difference. The windows on your house look really tall/long. Is it worth rearranging the bathroom floor plan so that the windows aren't in the tub/shower itself? We also looked at window films that obscure the view from the outside (make it look like a mirror) - there are several homes in our neighborhood that have this. It might be worth looking into - I have heard that at night, there might be some visibility, though....See More- 10 years ago
