A few thoughts... Stuff never lasted forever in the good old days...but in college in the 1990s one of my apartments had a fridge from the 1960s that was still working. Nowadays, things aren't made to last very long at all. The ROHS no-lead initiative, though a nice idea on paper, was probably a clever form of planned obsolescence. Superficial testing says it is ok. But no long term testing has proven that lead-free solder won't eventually form tin whiskers...little connections between circuit traces that cause the destruction of the boards. Moist environments like kitchens will hasten this kind of demise. Companies see repairs as money making opportunities. I had an outboard effects unit that was about 10 years old die on me. Harman Audio at the time wanted $500 to even -start- to diagnose the problem. Because it was a pro piece of equipment with XLR outputs...you're a pro, you must be rich and be able to expense everything. I looked into it myself. The power supply was dead - it turns out most serious electronics made since the mid 90s have sets of standardized switching power supplies with matching pin outs and board standoffs. It took a while to track and x-ref various manufacturer codes, but I found a power supply board that fit in the exact same spot and had leads with the exact same voltages. It was $50 from Mouser. Harman would surely have marked up this power supply so repair costs would have been 500+100+(30x2) for UPS shipping both ways...probably $630. Likewise I needed some opamp ICs on a mixer swapped out. After many, many hours of searching, I found a guy in Baltimore who does such replacements, he did about 15 chips for something like $75. Did an excellent job, you would not even recognize it had been resoldered. Point is, SOMEONE out there would know how to fix almost ANYTHING you might own, ALMOST all of the time. Sure, sometimes rare or custom ICs die and there's no replacing them, but 80-90% of the time its capacitors or simpler discrete components. Though a fridge compressor can die, more often it's the thermal switch or some other replaceable part. The challenge is you may never be able to find the good ones who will actually do this kind of work well, and correctly. I'm not even that into appliances but I've read many threads like this one, on various websites, so the experience is far from unique. When I replaced my fridge last year, I spent hours reading online reviews. It seems these days you are either lucky and get one that really passed all its QC checks or you get a lemon that the manufacturer let slip out the door.

Don't pick appliances because they're all from the same manufacturer! None of them do EVERYTHING equally well, IMHO. And re: Consumer Reports - be careful. Read the USER reviews too. Quite often, it seems the CR reviewers and the actual users are on two different planets - things CR rates highly get 1 or 2 stars from the users - repeatedly. This is not an isolated thing. Read as many reviews as you can all over the net, then go look at stuff. And if all that has died is the microwave and everything else is working fine, just replace the microwave. Microwaves aren't really considered repairable items these days and some of them barely make it to the end of the warranty. What you want is a microwave that performs well and meets YOUR needs. What do you want your microwave to do? How big, how much power, what settings, what interface - which can get really annoying if it's not to your liking! A few years ago, some idiot decided that microwaves with knobs for setting time (really???) instead of touch screen buttons were the way to go - and voila, practically all of them did that (what is this - 1975 all over again?) Thank goodness that bit of idiocy seems to be fading - but the point is, there are fads in appliance design too and you never know when one appliance is going to go toes up on you. The microwave is the least expensive item, and the one most likely to have to be replaced long before any other appliance. For that reason, I would never build a microwave in - if it dies and the line is no longer made, then what? Your cabinet may not be the right size for whatever you want to get next. Our microwave lives on an open shelf above the wall oven for this reason. Buy things based on your needs and wishes - not the wish of the store to sell you a whole bunch of appliances you weren't even considering before walking in. BTW - Kitchenaid calls some of their fridges "cabinet depth" and they are 30" deep. A counter depth fridge in my books shouldn't be much deeper than your cabinets - and most kitchen cabinets are 25" deep.

Agree with others that you should select each appliance on its own merits and not get all of the same brand because every brand has differences in each category I have a KA refrigerator which I selected because it was well reviewed and fit my specific needs more than others I was considering. It was almost identical to the Jennair refrigerator which was slightly more expensive and even looking at them with the salesperson he couldn't see any functional difference. I didn't want a water dispenser in the front or an ice dispenser in the front and I liked that my counter depth KA was 72" and so was a bit larger as well as having a more built in look. I had my cabinet maker do a hack with installing custom panels on the sides of the refrigerator so they look more built in. As mentioned, Sharp manufactures all microwave drawers. I love my Sharp drawer. Just make sure you get the model with the tilt out panel because otherwise what is the point of having a drawer? I have a Bosch side opening oven because I wanted the functionality of a side opening wall oven. It looks fine directly above the Sharp microwave drawer. I have a Bosch induction cooktop because it had the features I wanted in an induction cooktop and the only one I wanted more was the Gaggenau which was $10,000 instead of $3000 at the time. I went with a Bosch dishwasher because I was replacing a Bosch dishwasher that I was very pleased with. I might have gone with a Miele
