Okame vs Kanzan cherry tree
Comments (15)You will find some difference in ultimate size on the Kanzan, depending if it is grafted or grown on its own roots. Even if it does top out at 30 feet or less, its spread may be twenty. Grafted trees may top out smaller. However, caveat emptor...... they are not considered a long-lived tree. Expect its lifespan to typically be 15 to 25 years. I planted one where I wanted its effect, and it is in a area where normally I would not have considered it because of space. I pollard the tree. It's not something a typical homeowner wants to commit to....See MoreMaple vs. cherry?
Comments (7)I think in terms of performance both maple and cherry are pretty much equal - as long as the cabinets are made well. They do give different looks and then it's a matter of personal preference. When we started planning our kitchen I wanted light colored cabinets. Maple fits the bill but has a very plain grain (unless you go for something like quarter cut maple which is gorgeous and VERY expensive). DH wanted a nice wood with an interesting grain. Cherry would give that, especially if you go for solid wood. In the end we compromised: our cabinets are cherry veneer in a natural finish with flat doors, only the frames for some cabinet doors but is a bit darker. It gives us a contemporary look but still with a very natural and warm feel to it....See Morecherry aging example w FR sample door vs kitchen cabs
Comments (3)deedles, we are very happy with them - enough to use cherry again for the entertainment system. We started looking at cherry because we liked the warmth of cherry after it changes. Our GC had a sample door that was aged. We used that when choosing other finishes in our kitchen. The kitchen window is west facing so some bits of the cabinetry may get some direct sun. However, because we are in a hot summer climate, we have 4' eaves and plenty of trees for shade so we don't get much direct sun. I don't think it would make much difference because the cherry ages pretty quickly. I've never noticed a color difference between the more sheltered parts of my kitchen (e.g. toekick facings) and the more exposed parts. Most of the color change happens pretty quickly - in the first couple of months not years. The drawer pulls and handles are Schaub. We like the looks and they are very comfortable to use. When I was looking at this picture after posting, it occurred to me that we haven't chosen handles for the family room cabinets yet. Leela, thank you. We knew that cherry does that, but it is still a little alarming to see the new cabinets when they are so much lighter than you expect. Our new floors are unstained maple too....See MoreBrazilian Cherry vs. Mahogony floor Photosensitivity
Comments (8)I have Bellawood BC floors in my foyer, long halls, back entry hall, and eat in kitchen. They're beautiful... . HOWEVER, I would not use BC again. No matter what kind of light, they darken... and darken fast. When Diego installed the floors, he used the blue painters tape on the floors for a day. When he pulled it up the next day, there were stripes all over the floors where the tape had been! Then, when he did the floors in the next room, he used straps because I thought there was some kind of chemical reaction with the tape. Wrong. It was 'light' that darkened the 'uncovered' flooring and the wood under the tape and straps was lighter. IN ONE DAY this wood darkened and the stripes were easily seen. We have deep porches (8' and 12') so there is no direct sunlight and the floors still darkened. This wouldn't be a problem if I didn't have rugs at my door entrances and in front of my sink, etc. Believe me, the wood is VERY light sensitive...to ANY light. Even a light bulb can darken the wood. Why don't you go get a piece or two and do your own little test to see for yourself? If I had to do it over again, I would strongly consider Bellawood's Mahogany Santos OR Brazillian Walnut... OR Pennington's Brazilian Walnut Prefinished Hand Scraped Hardwood Flooring wood floors. All depends on my pocketbook at the time of purchase. :) Here's the handscraped wood I love by Pennington. Here's Brazillian Walnut Here is a link that might be useful: Bellawood...See MoreUser
