Comments (38)Do a web search for independent garden centers within comfortable driving distance and find out which, if any cherries they are/will be offering. Much, if not most of the barriers to shipping of Prunus plants to California will probably be present due to the State trying to protect the orchard industry there. When you look at a retailer's catalog or site and it says "Cannot ship to California or Hawaii" agricultural restrictions will probably pretty much always be the basis for such statements....See MorePhantom tree vs limelight
Comments (6)Lots of nurseries charge that for most trees in the 5-6' tall range in #5-7 pots. And this usually means that the smaller stuff is uniformly expensive, and that's a point where I turn around and leave. If they think they can get people's business, that's great for them. It's hard to find cheap Proven Winners trees to begin with. Phantom should be fine, especially for the price. I got a regular old Grandiflora tree for $20 and it's already 5' tall with a 3x3' bush up top. I bought it in August and it flowered profusely right after I put it in the ground! Nurseries seem to love to get people trouble who are in a hurry to buy nice stuff. In just a few years, you can get plenty of things cheap by being a patient shopper, or by taking divisions/donations from friends, neighbors and family, or by pitching in with people's yard work, etc....See MoreWill ornamental cherries become true from seed?
Comments (18)Them being clones cutting raised weeping cherries will have the genetically determined hardiness of the source plant - there is nothing about the process that would be expected to affect the genetics of the material used. At least as far as it pertains to cold tolerance. But any resulting plants will probably have to be trained to produce a single trunk with an elevated crown, from which the pendent branches can then cascade. In fact occasional Japanese cherries (and purple-leaved plums) of kinds most often seen as clearly defined trees showing instead noticeably shrubby growth habits here in my area have been assumed by a few of us to have been grown from cuttings. With the lack of visible inter-stocks or stocks serving as confirmation. Also I think when 'Kanzan' for instance began to be rooted from cuttings on a commercial scale very high amounts of hormones were being employed to produce the desired response. Incidentally I believe 'Snofozam' has also been mass produced from cuttings, so there you have this being done with much repeated success using a weeping form....See Morekwanzan cherry vs chanticleer pear for Toronto
Comments (6)Apart from disease and pest problems generally typical of rose family trees such as both of these two you need to find out what particular pressures there might be in your region. Some bug or blight that consistently spoils cherries and pears for instance. Otherwise as with all flowering cherries there is a good probability of a given 'Kanzan' specimen coming grafted on nuisance sweet cherry roots. Unless a point is made of finding stock that is cutting grown or grafted on different roots. Also 'Kanzan' actually produces a medium sized tree, as in 35 to 60ft tall. And becomes spreading with age. So if you don't want those kind of eventual dimensions it won't be right for the spot. As for the pear we've been having kind of a wet early half of the year in my area - and the million Callery pear cultivars in local parking lots etc. are peppered with large ugly leaf spots - maybe pear scab, I haven't checked. So in your rainier eastern summers this might be a regular thing....See Moreredteddy
