height of windows for banquette
Comments (2)30" off the floor is just about table height. Do you have a table you can push against a wall, and a bench about 18" high (standard chair seat/bench height, though I don't know what cabinets you're getting - 15" with a 3" cushion?)? Then you could try it, pretend the table edge is the window sill/stool and see if it pokes you in the back. Another option might be to install the window with a "picture frame" type casing going all the way around, instead of a stool and apron. Then you can even put a low "back" on the banquette if that's more comfortable. A lot of people put window seats in windows that are low to the floor....See MoreWindow & Pillows for Kitchen window seat banquette
Comments (17)I'm overwhelmed by all of your responses. This forum is really terrific. The chenille I ordered impulsively (Labor Day sale) arrived today. The stripes are patterns (I don't know how to describe it), so it may be a little busy for the cushion, but it is beautiful. Have you ever noticed that when you shop for clothes this time of year the fall clothes look so much more appealing than the summer clothes that you loved in May? That's how I feel about this upholstery fabric. The colors are really warm and rich. I've already bought it and the labor for the cushion is only $30, so I'm going to have it made up. Moccasinlanding was right that the chenille fabric is not an all-over design, so pillows could be tricky. The stripe patterns are of varying widths. Maybe I could cut out different stripes, splice them into solid fabrics and have pillows with bands which match my cushion. I have much work left to do (carpentry on the bench, patching the damage from stripping wallpaper, texturing and painting, etc.), but just seeing all of your beautiful banquettes and discussing the finishing touches has really inspired me and gotten me excited about the final result. Thanks a million!...See MoreQuestion re: banquette seating under windowsill
Comments (8)sorry to say that I rejected just such a planning option due to windows backing a banquette. The built in banquette would look great until someone went through the window backwards :-( or no one would sit with their backs to the windows in the winter :-( or we kept losing guests behind the banquette window drapes :-) We will be going with regular chairs. Comments (12)Thank you all so much for the diagrams, link and ideas. This is exactly the type of info I was looking for! Gooster - I am concerned with the space looking tight visually as you point out. I don't want the seating area to look squished into a corner. That chair with it's back to the french doors would have about 34" of space from my calculations. I have it set up that way now, to see how it feels. I am very interested in learning more about your movable storage banquette with padded back. Do you have any photos you could share with me? Lavender_lass - I can't do without the peninsula in this floorplan. But, what do you mean by not being able to access the banquette? Which part? Thank you very much for your help. Scrappy25 - I really like your idea of doing a furniture piece rather than a build-in, I hadn't thought of that. Cost-wise that is very appealing. I would need it to have back support, so I'm going to look at what options might exist for that. Overall, my concerns are making it look appealing and well designed, rather than squished and that the seating would be comfortable for someone with back issues....See Morecraftlady07
