Exposed backsplash from replacing old range hood..

Hello all,

My kitchen is still decked out in 1968 fab appliances. The prior owner of the house left the original receipts.. so it was quite interesting finding out just how old the appliances are.. However, recently while cleaning my 1968 Swanson range hood I noticed the wires looked charred. I had an electrician come by and the sheathing literally came apart when he touched it. So.. it is time to get it replaced.

I have a replacement range hood, but it is about an inch shorter than the original hood. The old tiled backsplash looks to be tiled just to the bottom of the hood. Should I tile 1" of tiles under the hood or get it painted? Unfortunately, I have no extra funds now to retile the kitchen.. which will be a massive undertaking since everything is still in 1968.. Ideas?

More than likely you won't see tha inch unless you stick your head under the hood. Just paint it a matching color and call it a day.

You could remove a section and replace it with a larger format but matching color tile, or a stripe to give it interest.

How much will be pulled out with the new vent? Can you keep the hood and get an new insert fitted? That hood is a dandy.

And it's here! No pics yet, we're still needing to install the hood and backsplash so it's a bit of a mess. But, as expected - install was simple. This range is truly no frills, all business. If you want fancy oven racks, Sabbath mode, timers, and so forth - look elsewhere. Burner design is great, but I'm not sure if I can put any burner anywhere I want or if I have to leave it how it is. The factory setup is fine anyway, though I could see a need to have both back burners as the 25k's as opposed to being on opposite corners. The oven door is substantial and seems to have very nice hinges. It has a good heft, but it's not "heavy" per se. I reheated a piece of pizza after doing the initial burn off and it felt like it took longer to preheat than my old KA but since the oven is massive compared to that thing, I'm not surprised. The oven door does not get hot, either. It's warm-ish, that's all. Going to make a pork tenderloin and some roasted potatoes tonight, we'll see how that goes. I absolutely love it even though it sticks out a few inches farther than the previous setup, I simply don't care. Question though - the oven has a flat floor which is awesome, is it a huge no-no to set something down there, thinking maybe like a pizza steel? I don't have to, just curious if I even can. Will update with pics as soon as everything's installed and again, thank you gardenweb for even discussing this range, lord knows I'd have never heard of it otherwise. Todd

I think it would look great. I think you should be careful to choose a pattern with low relief for relatively easy cleaning. They sell cheapo faux pressed tin panels (made of plastic) at Home Depot. You could put them up and see how you like them...

Have you considered wallpaper? You can bring in color, as well as a design, if that's your 'schtick'. Just throwing another consideration in the mix. I personally *hate* a backsplast covered in tile or granite from countertop to bottom of cabinets, or even further up. I've gone *about* 3/4 up the wall, with the remained just the neutral color thruout the rest of my home, but only on the interior cabs, so above the stove and sink areas. On the perimeter bank of cabinets, it's just a painted wall, where I had planned to use wallpaper, but haven't done so yet. I also picked up at an auction a painted canvass, which is long and narrow, and thought of using it here. It's a vintage French scene of a girl feeding chickens in a barn, done in dark colors, which is my preference. I just don't want to leave it should I sell. ;)

We completed a large scale kitchen remodel with high end architect and construction company. We heavily researched 36" gas ranges and selected a Miele 36" gas range because we do a lot of baking and because of the self-clean function. The oven doesn't reach temperature. We have to use an oven thermometer and constantly adjust the temperature to bake. The gas takes a bit to come out and once it does, it comes out with a vengeance and the burners click for about a minute every single time you turn it on. This has happened since the first day it was installed. Like the OP, we also hear the loud noises during baking. We have had 5 repair people out, including Miele reps and still no resolution. But- the worst part has been the same as the OP- scorched backsplash. The manual for the gas range has changed since we received the range- our manual does NOT mention anything about vapors, scorching or trim. The architect/designer and construction company have had multiple people through our house to figure out what is going on and all point fingers to the range. We even asked about a backguard. When we brought this to Miele's attention, they blew us off. After using the self-clean function, our tile backsplash looks like a mess. We don't know how to resolve the issue because the oven doesn't work properly and the backsplash issue isn't a quick fix. We aren't blaming anyone. We just wanted to share our experience and hope that maybe someone might have some constructive comments to help us come up with a solution.

I guess I can see just how much space is left after it is removed and if there is any space available to even tile! :)

The new vent is 6" tall, the old is 7" (with the ornate trim, 8")

It is a very pretty hood, if not for the falling apart wiring, I had planned on holding onto it for longer. I don't think I can find new wiring for a unit this old?

It's one thing to rewire a Tesla, but a range hood should be a piece of cake for a journeyman electrician. Keep it.

Replace the wiring. This should not be a problem. A new hood is going to require rewiring for a connection. Keep your timeless hood, I like it.

It is a pretty fab hood; scalloped edged were all the rage in 1968.

I'd ask about getting it rewired before commiting to replacing it-maybe the electrician you talked to or an appliance repair place.

I'm with the rewire camp :) Or have a new fan installed within the old hood.

Sell that hood to me! if not, have it re wired, that is a classic beauty, or as others have said maybe you can find an insert to replace the guts...

Just an update.. the electrician was able to rewire it! :D He snipped off the burned section and connected it the switch wiring. The rest of the wiring looks good, so no need to replace! :) Just want to thank everyone for their suggestion! It was very helpful. Thank you!

Darn. I wanted that hood!

I'd like to see more of your time capsule. It looks to be in fabulous condition! I'm guessing this is NOT a "starter home". Looks like the good stuff.

Haha, sorry! I really do like this hood and am glad I am able to continue using it. The prior owners of this house took really good care of their home and kept everything in great condition. The home was built in 1940 and it seems all the upgrades for the kitchen was done in 1968. The other parts of the house were updated in the 80s (the bathrooms in glorious 80s style) and bay window in the 90s. :)

It's cute! But how on earth did it stay so clean over the years? And those appliances! I know old appliances were sturdier, but not a ding nor dent on all that stainless is pretty amazing.
