GE profile induction?

Anybody here tried this range? Gas is not an option for us, and I am sick of electric. I am interested in induction but I have no experience with it!

I have a Bosch induction. So far I love it. Since the cooktop does not heat up, food does not get burned onto it. So much easier to keep clean. For kids it is so much safer since the element does not get hot enough to burn skin. It also won't heat your kitchen up in the summer. Mine will automatically shut down after a long period of time which is a particularly nice feature if you have forgetful folks in your home. It also has a power boost to speed up the heating of a pot.

I think most of the brands out there are good. Each has different features that you may or may not want/need. I got mine when it was 25% off at Sears.

The only cons that I know of are: you need ferromagnetic pans (a magnet needs to be able to stick to the bottom of your pan; your pans need to be flat bottomed - you can't use a wok; and if you have a power outage you are out of luck. For me the pros far outweigh the cons.

I have the GE monogram induction and love it. Its easier to clean. I purchased the emeril pots and pans for induction and love them as well. Wait for a sale at Macy.

Oven temperature fluctuations have been discussed here before and at some length, and my recollection is there was a thread last fall that was specifically about the ovens in GE induction ranges. (Unfortunately, I cannot find that thread at the moment.) My late range, a GE Dual Fuel which died last fall, also exhibited the same kind of behavior that Marc has mentioned. However, it did not overbrown/burn things on the upper racks as he mentioned his doing in the other thread on induction power settings. That is what makes me concerned about a possibility that there may be a problem with oven controller board. On my GE DF, the temperature drop was more like 35F than 50F. Basically, the oven heated up over the set-point, shut off the burners, and, when the temp fell a certain amount (which might be 30 or 50F), turned the elements back on again, and continued to cycle and eventually produced an average heat. So. some difference from the expected heat is to be expected. I've seen reports here of some ovens having swings as much as the 50F that Marc is reporting, but I don't know if that is what the GE induction range's controller is programmed for. The cycling can be confusing because of the way the display is programed to work. As bmorepanic says, the GE displays shows you their version of actual current oven temperature during the preheat cycle. (Or, at least, it counts up to show you that it is preheating.) Once the oven reaches the pre-heat, the display only shows the set-point temp. It does not show the cycling up and down. Now, you and I might look at the display assume we are seeing the average temperature, but we are not. We are looking at the set-point. Turn the oven off and then back on, and the oven is in pre-heat mode where it shows its current reading. The other odd behavior exhibited by my GE DF was something that sometimes occurred when I bumped up the heat. Say, I had been convection roasting at 350F and wanted to boost the heat to 425F. Sometimes the display would immediately drop (to 335F or 340F but sometimes much lower) and then slowly climb to the set the temperature. Sometimes it would just slowly climb from 350F. Other times, it would just seem stuck at 350F. I would have to shut it off and then back on. At that point, the display would show something like 335F and then climb to the new set point. This behavior got worse over the year before my stove's oven controller board died. Which probably is not a comforting thought. Marc's posting in the other thread mentions problems with things burning on the upper racks of the oven. This suggests to me that the upper heating element is being run for more than just pre-heating when doing non-convection roasting and baking. Thus, I suspect there may be a problem with the oven controller board. My recollection from the other thread is that Marc has had the GE for 3.5 years which leads me to ask if there is an extended warranty? Avoid the Samsung. Cooks great, bakes great. Horrible Reliability. Here is the sad story. Trying to get warranty replacement or refund from Samsung, which has been utterly unresponsive to service calls. Retailer only somewhat better. It is utterly unacceptable that a range purchased for $1,8000 on 8/31/13 and not installed until Nov. 25, 2013 because of kitchen renovation delays -- and then only lightly used in two-person household -- blows up with a bang that interrupts electrical service in the entire house on June 27 when my husband simply put on a teapot to heat and then, despite "repairs," has a continuing series of operating issues preventing its use after only 8 months of service. It is also utterly unacceptable that Samsung, as manufacturer, was completely unable to schedule repair services within less than three weeks of the initial catastrophic failure of the range, despite many hours I spent on the phone, and on hold, with Samsung representatives. And despite the promise of one of them, ironically named Jesus, that he had placed an order for the retailer to deliver a comparable replacement range within a day or two (before the looming July 4 holiday). Alas, that was what is known as the Big Lie, clearly intended to simply get me off of the phone. Getting zero satisfaction from Samsung, I turned to the retailer, PC Richard, where I have found somewhat responsive service -- although the service people who are scheduled to appear within a week or 10 days of most requests never arrive with the appropriate parts, which are only ordered then, requiring a second service call, and a wait of additional weeks before anything is "fixed." And if the job requires two service people, a many-weeks-long wait, for special scheduling. The problems: After that loud bang and whole-house electrical disruption on June 27, nothing in or on the range top or oven worked, despite multiple attempts to reset it. The E-84 error code indicated simply that service was required (duh). Happily, at least, the circuit and surge protectors we have in the house to protect my extensive home office equipment, TVs, stereos, etc. did their jobs and after some panicked resetting of circuits, it turned out everything else could be reset. But the unit itself was useless for next FOUR WEEKS, until PC Richards finally got what was described to me as a new CPU for it, PLUS the two repairmen required to install it. They worked most of the afternoon of July 28 replacing a large circuit board underneath the burner area and declared the range fixed. While cooking two days later, I began noticing that the left side burners were behaving erratically. Especially the front one was turning itself off unexpectedly. But I had a lot of houseguests coming for next few weeks and decided just to keep an eye on it. What I determined, after the mayhem of hosting 14 visitors to my "beach house" subsided and I was left with only two guests, was that the left front burner would not recognize pots smaller than 12" in diameter, even though it is supposed to work with 6" (minimum) pots, and that the rear burner on the left only erratically accepted anything but huge pots. Called PC Richard on Aug. 11 and added range top complaint to a previously scheduled service call for my Samsung over-the-range microwave/convection oven (another Samsung lemon). Then, a few days later, my sister decided to bake thank-you cookies for her brother in law in my oven late at night. Before one batch was out of the oven, the unit had started to make very loud, and very much abnormal, fan sounds. Next morning, called PC Richard again, and added oven problem to the service call previously scheduled for today, Wednesday, Aug. 20. The PC Richard service man arrived this afternoon and quickly discovered the replacement part he'd thought he had ordered for the microwave wasn't the one he'd brought. Then he turned his attention to range. After calling Samsung and waiting -- on hold -- in my kitchen for more than half an hour to talk to a Samsung rep, the serviceman confirmed both problems (surprise) and said he's ordering parts for a fan located behind the range top control panel and some kind of induction controllers for the burners that he says were not part of the CPU he replaced three weeks ago. It is obvious, at least to me, that the range I bought is a lemon and an electronic nightmare. It is a good-enough convection oven and induction cooktop -- when it works -- but simply not constructed to withstand the "rigors" of actually being used to cook or bake in even a small household. And I know what I’m talking about. While this is my first induction cooktop, I previously owned a GE convection range in another house for more than a decade without experiencing any comparable issues. In fact, the only range that has ever given me these sorts of problems was a Thermador purchased (and quickly replaced under warranty) in 1979! It can't take the heat; I want it out of my kitchen. This lemon of a range came with a one-year warranty when I purchased it last Labor Day weekend. Now, I have asked Samsung to replace the unit with a comparable -- working -- model ASAP, or better yet, arrange a full refund for me with PC Richard, so that I can replace this piece of Samsung junk with a functioning appliance of my choosing. At this point I have lived with a propane camp stove instead of a functioning range nearly all summer, and have neither the time nor the patience to put up with endless service calls my Samsung NE597NOPBSR/AA quite evidently requires.

We've had our 36" 5-burner GE Profile induction cooktop for about 2 months now, and I LOVE it for all of the reasons mentioned above. Two things anyone might want to consider when deciding on which induction to buy: 1. SERVICE--DH didn't get around to installing the hood until AFTER the cooktop had been installed. He dropped his hammer on it from a height of 2' and cracked the glass. Yes, I was angry, especially since I knew he was tired and I'd tried to get him to stop before he made any mistakes! But he called GE, the repair guy called us immediately, and ordered any parts he thought might have been damaged (the control panel was right under the glass where the hammer hit). He had them FedEx/UPSed to us, and told us to call him when they arrived. We did, and he came the SAME day and did the repair. The control box had not been damaged, so he returned it. 2. SS RIM--If you've ever had something boil over, having the stainless steel rim instead of only the smooth black surface will keep most things from overflowing onto the counter or floor. I can't count the number of times I've cooked rice and had a considerable amount of water boil over--including yesterday. :o) I'd forgotten I'd put it on power boost (do NOT leave the cooktop while this is on), and walked to the other side of the kitchen to get something. Over it went out of the pot, but it stayed within the boundaries of the cooktop because of the SS rim, although the mess spread over three burners. Easy to fix. Turned it down so it stopped overflowing immediately, picked up the pans on the three burners and wiped them and the cooktop off, and was back in business in a couple of minutes with the rice simmering away at the perfect temperature. No matter what I've cooked, there's been a perfect simmer point. The placement of the different sized burners also works well for me. Soon the real test will come, when DH and DS both stir fry on the two front burners. There's room for the 14" stir fry pan, the 12" extra deep 6 qt saute pan, and the 13" French skillet in the back on Low to keep things warm. I LOVE this cooktop!!! I also love my new pots and pans. Up until we got the induction cooktop, I'd cooked for decades using a few not-so-good ones. While researching pans, I ran across explanations of what each kind of pan can be used for, which were helpful in making choices from the many AllClad options. I ended up getting the Kitchen Aid pans recommended by Consumers Report (partly because I like glass lids), and several larger AllClad pieces from Williams-Sonoma that were a lower price in their catalog as well as some that went on sale in their store after Christmas. I also got some from the AllClad outlet in PA via the internet. Several of the W-S prices were cheaper than the outlet! I'd looked over the pans in the reduced price collections of the various stores, but had determined that most of the ones I wanted were not included in those offers. This is exactly why I don't like this new KA color! It locks one into KA appliances only! Great for KA, not great for consumer! With regular stainless, one can get the appliance best for ones needs. If it's possible, I'd can the black stainless and start over.

I have the profile induction range. We LOVE it! It arrived right before Christmas and we have used it about 6 days a week since then, no problems. At the time, the GE and Electrolux were the two best models. Not sure if that's changed, but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it at all.

Is there something specific you want to know?

There is a ton of good stuff to read through about induction over in Appliances, and there is a lengthy thread about the GE and Electrolux slide in models that is great and also applicable to the corresponding range models.

We are the first people we know to use induction, so it was a little scary to just jump in, but it is great. Be sure to have a tea kettle with a little water to test the "burners" at delivery. The delivery guys kept insisting if I just turned them on they would get really hot. They had not seen an induction range before, but they were amazed when I had them touch the surface right next to the whistling kettle.

Any pan you have that a magnet will stick to will work if the bottom is flat. And if you want to you can cook with paper towels under your pans to contain messes. We have done that on occasion and it's fantastic.

I have a Bosch Induction - used for less than a month - amazing unit - love it. Bought an 800 series at an outlet as a used unit, was still new in box unopened, for less than the 500 series. I am soooo glad we opted for induction over a propane unit!

glad to hear everybody is happy with their range! Bertizzoni and AGA I think make an induction range but with prices starting at $7500 they are way out of my price range. I think I am going to see if I can find the GE profile on a black friday sale! I like the look of the electrolux better, but it seems the GE has better reviews..

Me too! I read several reports of trim coming loose and interfering with adjacent drawers. Saw it on the floor model too. Beautiful though!

But I am happy with choosing the GE. Don't forget to check their online store. And if you know anyone that works for GE the friends and family store has good prices plus sales, and any rebates still apply.

As far as I know they only have one GE Profile induction freestanding range. Mine is model PHB925SPSS.

I don't have the range, but I do have the 36" GE profile induction cooktop. I LOVE it! This is my first induction appliance, and I am so happy with my choice. It is a breeze to clean, it doesn't heat up the kitchen like traditional stoves, and it cools down super quick after cooking. The only cons - not all of my former cookware worked and it does sometimes make a very slight humming sound, especially when multiple burners are being used. I was prepared for these cons though and I have never regretted my choice.

Glad to see all these positive comments. I ordered the GE induction slide in a few days ago--can't wait to use it. My kitchen demolition was supposed to start today...we live in the Baltimore 'burbs and are in the midst of Sandy, so now we are delayed.

I've been using my GE Profile Slide-In Range, PHS925STSS, for a month now and love it! After reading many reviews about cookware, including recommendations from Cook's Illustrated, I purchased the Tramontina 10-Piece 18/10 Stainless Steel TriPly-Clad Cookware Set from Walmart. The set is definitely a value purchase.
My one issue I had was with the oven. I came to the realization that although the temperature indicator said the set temp was "reached," you need to wait a bit longer for the oven to adequately preheat. I went through the process of adjusting the temperature per the User's Manual only to (eventually) realize that all I needed was a bit more patience.
Love the warming drawer, too.
Yes, this range costs more, but for an appliance that is used daily, it seems well worth the extra money.

I have an Electrolux induction range and love it love it!!
well HAD (we are starting a remodel due to a major water leak) I will be replacing it with the exact same oven. I know people who got a whole kitchen full of appliances for what I paid for the range but it is sooooo worth it. Gas not an option here and I was sick to death of cleaning around coils. I started looking a smooth-top ranges and then found out about induction and never looked back! It cleans up super easy- nothing ever sticks. The settings are such small increments and you can set it low enough to melt chocolate without burning.

I also love the oven part of the E-lux range. the bottom drawer is actually an oven too, tho it doesn't broil. I think it only goes to 400* but that's ok. Love the easy glide racks. has a bread proofing setting and lots of others.

I did have to purchase new cookware. I got Emeril's stainless which is made by All-clad for less than $300. I was thrilled to find out the few things that my mother had left me worked as well.

I have the Wolf - got it for a great price about a year ago - but installed in the spring.
I was so sure induction was the greatest thing on earth - well, I am learning to like it.

This weekend, I think I made friends with it - I cooked beef stew in a giant saute pan. It was a one pan meal - sautÃ¯Â¿Â½ed the beef, onions, added the carrots, parsnips, Bells best brown ale, etc. Brought it to a boil and then set it on simmer for the rest of the day - I put a temp probe into the pan and watched it cook all day - I have to say - it was the best stew ever! I had my crock pot out - all ready to use and said - NO - I want to test the induction.

I had some All Clad, bought one Staub to practice on my portable burner, added the giant sautÃ¯Â¿Â½ pan and pasta pot. Then found a sale on CIA for a small set with all of my missing pieces.

I don't know about the GE - but there is a bit of a buzz on the Wolf - it is worse when first turned on. Staub is the quietest and the more layers in the pan - the louder the buzz.

It is easy to clean - it has a Schot Ceran top - most are either Schot Ceran or Corning - but I don't know which is better.

Would I do it again - yes and they are only going to get better.

PS - watch out for parties - my first gathering and someone thought it was a giant cutting board... Duh! So now, I have some silicon mats to put on the stove when not using at a party.
