best integrated custom panel fridge?
Comments (48)Hi Folks I know it was literally years ago but I just wanted to chime in and say what a great discussion thread this is/was. So many claims are made by sellers and "makers" - for what it's worth, I am going the opposite direction with my project for our own home. I am building new doors that will look like 1930's commercial chiller units, with big hinges and handles as well as adding several personal touches to the whole lot, like refashioned Chrysler wings emblems etc . The two fridges I am using are a liebherr wine/freezer unit and a Jenn Air Alaska model - see attached link and click on AA kitchen project .... might cause some heart palpitations for some, but perhaps a smile for others. BTW In one of my designs I overcame the issues around the toe kick by replacing the floor under the fridge with an insect proof perforated metal grill ... still strong enough to take the fridge and enabled cool air to vent up from the underfloor. Of course, we live in a temperate climate so this may not be an option for N. Comments (8)Basically agreed with everything above---personally I like doors between 15" and 21", with 24" okay for a single large door. But I think she'd be fine anywhere in the range you're talking about. One thing to remember, too, is that your eye will not pick up small differences. In our old kitchen, no two sets of doors were the same width, but the main differences you noticed were the big 21" doors and the little 15-18" doors, not the distinctions between the 16" and 17" pairs next to each other. In our new kitchen, I only discovered this weekend that our doors aren't all the same---they were designed to all be 18" but apparently making all three equal meant the blind corner pullout didn't have quite enough space, so our cabinetmaker adjusted it in the shop so that there is a pair of 17.5" doors and then an 18.5" door. They're all in a row and your eye reads them as being the same (or at least, our eyes do). I only figured it out when I was measuring drawers and discovered we had an extra inch of interior space in the drawer over the blind corner! Comments (17)Almost everyone goes through the same anguish on here, knobs or handles? What style? Drove me crazy because I'm not that decor savy and none of my previous kitchens HAD knobs. And YES, ajsmama, the doors wear on the corners. I just replaced 27- (or possibly 40) year-old cabinets and one of the [many] reasons was that awful chewed look on the corners of often used drawers and doors. Many times your hands are wet, you need a knife or pot, and grab the door. Anyway, being non-artistic but very analytical, I went through my tremendous collection of kitchen photos and made notes. It was 50:50. Or maybe 25:25:25:25. Half had all knobs, or all handles, the same on everything. The other half have both, half with the knobs on the drawers and half with the handles on the drawers (and vice versa). It made me feel better to know it didn't matter what I chose, there obviously wasn't any 'rule'. So I looked through the pictures again for ones that were MOST like mine, white antiqued cabinets/French Country style decor, until I found the ONE I liked best and copied their placement. My knobs are a couple inches UP from the bottom corner of the doors (my handles are centered on the flat drawers). The cabinet guy looked at me with raised eyebrows and said something like, "Everyone is different!" I've actually seen more than one kitchen with the slightly raised knob placement. It just appealed to me. :) Another thing I did was go look at handles in person. Fortunately there is a fancy hardware store nearby that has a lovely display of HUNDREDS of styles. I was going to get cup pulls until I saw them in person. They were different than expected, so I went with handles. It really helped me to SEE them. Comments (9)It's purely aesthetic. I think, long term, two point handles work better than single knobs, but any quality cast with screws from the back will work. Choose what looks good in your kitchen and feels nice in your hand. Remember, there will be some suction to pull against, through probably not as much as a SubZero. The ones in your link look nice. One nice thing about longer appliance pulls is that they're comfortable for multiple heights. They also point out where the fridge is. I have 3' by 1" huge handles. But, again, drawer sized ones will also work....See More

I also have the Thermador French door with panels. I had to just guess on size and placement, but luckily, it worked out great! They are placed just right for easy opening. Here is a photo-- HTH!

13 years agoIt's important to pick a pull that your hand can fit behind. I was surprised at the number of them I ruled out because of that.
Mine is about 4 feet off the ground (the bottom of it).
