Filler size for corner cabinets?

We have a corner of an L with a blind corner cabinet on one side and a bank of wide drawers on the other. Our cabinetmaker typically uses 2.5" filler on each side of the L to allow the pulls to clear. I'd love to go with 1.5" filler to make my latest cockamanie design idea work---but would that be creating new problems with clearance? Thought I'd get some feedback here first before broaching it with him... The pulls we are looking at have a 1" projection. Cabinets are frameless. I'm thinking the drawers should clear no problem, and we'd just need to be certain to align the door pull so that it isn't hitting a drawer pull (and have the right hinge to keep it from swinging open too far, but we'd need that even with a wider filler, I think...) Am I missing other big issues, though, or could this potentially work? (Cabinets are already built so can't change sizes, and wouldn't want to anyway.)

Yes, it will cause issues. You need to remember that unless you have inset cabinets, your doors & drawer fronts will be another 1" deeper than the cabinets. Most pulls stick out another 1" to 1-1/4"...in your case 1". You also need some "wiggle room" to be sure you clear your pulls...say another 1/4".

So....

1" door/drawer front + 1" pull + 1/4" = 2-1/4"

Very close to what your carpenter "typically uses". He knows what he's talking about!

(If you have inset cabinets, you might be able to get away w/only 1-1/2" filler.)

OK...I read the last part again...you might be able to figure out a way to do it by fiddling w/pull and knob locations, but I'm not sure I would be willing to take the chance. Besides, if you starting fiddling around w/the locations of the pulls & knobs, how will it look compared to the rest of the kitchen?

Do your drawers (including drawer fronts) fill the entire vertical space? I.e., are there any "gaps" b/w the drawers that a knob or pull would fit in? Or, do your drawers & drawer fronts fill the entire vertical space? (Inset cabs would have "gaps", but I don't think frameless would.)

How will the door to the blind cabinet open? If it's hinged on the corner side, you will need to be sure the door clears the pulls and then some (so you can open it more than 90 degrees.) If it's hinged on the other side, then you just need to be sure the drawer will clear the knob...there won't be any "clear space" where the knob could be placed. (Assuming the drawers open out far enough to reach the knob...do you have 3/4 or full-extension drawers? How wide is the opening to the blind corner cabinet?)

IMHO, I think you should stick with at least a 2-1/4" filler.

I've decided to box in my blind corner, though it does seem wasteful: 1. Skipping the blind corner allows me to have larger drawers in the adjacent corners, and I prefer the space in drawers to space on a lazy susan. Things on a lazy susan can fall off in the back, and I find the things a bit cumbersome. 2. The lazy susan is pretty expensive. 3. I am planning ample storage space in an adjacent pantry. I'm expecting the builder will put something underneath the countertop for support in that corner, but, in my kitchen anyway, it won't be something that provides storage. An ideal situation would be to box in the blind corner . . . but access that space from the other side; however, that's only really possible if you have a U-shaped counter overlooking a table area.

Same problem here, and I have 3 inches between the frige and the wall, on the right. I have a Kenmore Elite french door bottom freezer. The deli drawer can be placed on either the left or right. Since my wall is on the right, the shallow deli drawer has to be on the left, no way to move it and I'm not sure if it would open out if it were on the right. Yes, you can pull the fridge out for deep cleaning, or to change shelves, but that's a hassle not worth it, if there is any opportunity to move it. Something else to think about: In order for the right door to remain open, I have to open the right crisper drawer, and that holds it open, for when I need to put in a large item which requires two hands. On my model, the right side crisper does pull out all of the way, even with the door hitting the wall. In other words, it's manageable, but not the best set up. Mine also has a slide back shelf, very nice for taller items that wouldn't fit otherwise. It's on the right. I guess it could be moved, but when shopping, be sure and check all those things out. If your wall is on the right, be sure you can adjust things properly. I was dealing with it, and really torn as DH didn't want me moving too many things. But, my designer and my cabinet guy (also a KD) have both recommended that I give up having counterspace right next to the fridge for the importance of being able to open both doors wide. I agree with them. There is counterspace that will be a little less than 3 ft away, so I'm moving mine across the room. Landing space is important, but as long as it's not too far away, try to get the fridge in a position where those doors can open!

Corner Sink Base Cabinet Size?

Here is a pic of my 36" corner sink base with a 25" single bowl sink and 1" filler on each side. The filler may be required if you go with full overlay doors in order for the doors to open properly. Not sure about inset or partial overlay though. I do not feel crowded at all, but I am petite. DH has a larger frame and no complaints from him so far. I actually downsized from a 42" corner sink base and can't even tell the difference.

Lisa - two KD people that I have spoken to said that the voided corner does not provide wider drawers on either side. What am I missing? Nothing as far as I can tell because what they are telling you makes no sense to me at all. If you don't give up 12" of linear space to a Susan, you gain 9" of drawer width (3" goes to spacer at corner). I considered adding a BCC to my sink corner (didn't have space on sink side to do corner Susan) but opted not to because a) it wasn't the right kind of storage for that corner and b) a drawer base was cheaper storage than a BCC. Here's my corner. Drawers & trash pull-outs open. If I had done a BCC, I would have lost the bank of drawers on the right. If I'd had room for a corner Susan, I would have lost 27" of much needed drawer storage. The few items that I would have been able to store in a BCC (ditto for a corner Susan) ended up in a a single drawer in a much roomier cab next to my wall oven. I use the items in the drawers in my prep zone much more regularly than the items I use in the drawer by my oven. A few extra steps now and then is a much better option than extra steps several times a day, IMO. Look at the whole picture when it comes to storage. What you decide for one area affects storage in another. It's a domino effect, IME.

Thanks---sounds like I should stick with his rec. If I'm *really* lucky, we'll pick up an inch or two when we do the final measurement after the drywall is in, and will still be able to pull it off. Thanks for the help!
