Slate backsplash -- too much of a good thing?

Sorry about the constant posting about my countertop and backslash indecision!

I was cleaning my basement and came across a ton of extra small slate mosaics that we used in our master bathroom when we redid it a few years ago. We wound up changing our idea so that's why we had so much extra.

I am pretty much decided on using WilsonArt Willow Stone for the perimeter counters and Formica Basalt Slate for the island.

Do the slate mosaics look right with the Willowstone? I tried taping them up to get a better idea but they kept falling down so the best I can do is hold up one sheet. Will I wind up hating this?

I was afraid to commit to one color on the backsplash - with the slate, it has so many colors that it seems like it will go with everything. That is a sample of the WillowStone on my counter.

Thanks Swentastic! Yes the tile was a LOT of work. I think marble adds a great timeless organic look. So far, the grout is fine. I have sealed it with some grout sealer. The marble tile is polished so it wouldn't need much more care, but I used the same sealer on the tile as well. I debated whether I should go with a gray/off white grout for a long while. In the end I took the risk. Lets hope it stays looking good. My tile guy really worked to minimize the grout lines. In most cases, the tiles are stacked right next to each other with minimal grout between them. Hopefully that minimizes the amount of water/grease/stains that penetrate the grout over time. Everyone has already said it well, but I do have a little to add. Some people like them and some people don't, but it depends upon the granite too. For example, although I don't like full granite backsplashes in general, I think that the one posted in this link is quite beautiful. So here's my advice: 1) Decide if you like the look of the full height granite backsplash or not in general. (Pick up a good kitchen book/magazine or search google images online.) As you look at them, do you often like them, sometimes like them or (like me) usually cringe. If you CRINGE or OFTEN LIKE them then stop there. You're done; you've answered your question. 2) If you SOMETIMES like them, then try to find an example in a granite that you like and try to find out exactly why it is that you like some versus others. Is it the darkness or lightness of the granite? Is it the contrast or lack thereof of the cabinets with the granite, etc. I hope this helps. - Jim

greenthumbfish - I found mine at Ceramic Tileworks in Maple Grove, MN. (It's made by Florida Tile.) Their website is ceramictileworksmn.com. The medallion is not shown on their website, but I know they had 3 more in stock. Give them a call. I see that southcypress.com has it online, but it is about $45 more than what I paid at Ceramic Tileworks. Not sure what either place charges for shipping. HTH! I love the piece and can't wait to see it on the wall. ccoombs - Can you provide more details/pictures of what you've decided to do? I hope you'll post pictures of your backsplash progress. Walnut countertops and marble backsplash? Too much?

Thanks for all of the input! I was second guessing myself on whether wood countertops on top of wood floors in a narrow space would just look like a lot of wood or whether it would help balance all of the white cabinetry, and I wasn't sure if the marble was too much on top of that since some kitchen designers warn about using too many elements. But I want all of the pretties in my kitchen! I'm going to go for it. Yay, waterlox! Trailrunner, I'm so happy to hear you're loving yours after 8 years--I'll definitely be going with it. I had misgivings about wood countertops until I ran across all of the reviews of waterlox. And the marble fabricator I'd go with has a great acid wash treatment that reduces the appearance of etching. And it helps that I know I'll be okay with some dings and chips and scratches, especially since my current place has a cottage/farmhouse vibe to it. I loved the quartz in my last place, but it chipped around the undermount sink after five years. I think i'll be less upset with wood or marble since I'm not expecting the same durability...plus with wood I can always sand it down and refinish it, and marble can be rehoned.

Perfecto! Now we need a grout color......... my vote is for natural, no color. It will dry to a slightly lighter shade than your countertop.

I will have to dig up the original receipt, but I believe it is called "Sikar Multi" from The Tile Shop. They are tumbled 1x1's on 12 inch sheets. Honed, not polished. Now I just need to make sure I truly have enough!

Would it look better if I just did an accent row of maybe 2 or 3 squares?

If I did an accent row I could probably use something like a beigy-grey ceramic as the main tile. There is one from the Tile Store caleld Zirconio Bianco 8x8 that I am having trouble posting a picture of.

I would run it up to the bottom of the cabinets. It does make me think about the window tile tho.

Slate doesn't normally have trim tiles. You have the area where the tile turns into the window and the bullnosed end tiles and the funny place where the wall cabinet doesn't end at the exactly correct place to line up the tile.

I wonder if you could get some larger format tile of one of the colors - like 12" tiles of the green or coppery color. You could take them to a fabricator and get bullnoses cut on an edge to have an "end" for the wall, the small about of exposed top near the windows and a turned corner for the window
