A design question - 'theme' how much is too much
Comments (15)I'm sorry to be so confusing. The picture is of my current kitchen. We are doing a facelift for the current kitchen - basically to stave off the necessary gut job in a few years. I am asking myself a lot of questions - I want things to look good now... but if I have to buy something now (ie new sink) - I hope to repurpose it in the new kitchen. (new kitchen will have the arch in it -- already have a few arch windows in the house) The current kitchen is about 30 yrs old. Cabs were good in their day - but I've had to fix more than a few drawers and rehang cab doors. We just replaced the island countertop because the old tile one was in such bad shape. I'm also using the replacements as an opportunity to "try things on for size" before spending the big bucks on cabinetry and granite (or whatever). Dh made the island top bigger so I can see how narrower aisles feel. (so far, so good. DW open can be a problem, but doesn't outweigh the benefits of the larger counter surface) Another question I'm mulling over in my head is the counterdepth fridge I referred to in an earlier post. As popular as stainless appliances are, I have not been happy with mine. Nearly impossible to keep clean. Trying to decide if it is entirely the fault of the water/ice dispenser ... or if I can make a white fridge work in my future space. And then there is the french door (what I have) vs SxS dilemma. I miss having vertical access to the freezer. I tend to make a lot of partial ingredients ahead of time and store in freezer (already browned sausage for example). I don't like digging into the pull out freezer of the french door each time I'm grabbing my pre-prepped ingredients. Anyway. My head is spinning, trying to design 2 kitchens - the now kitchen and the later kitchen... and trying to make the more expensive decisions work for both. Dh's eyes begin to glaze over every time I try to talk out loud about it... This is my current kitchen's floorplan - dh's changes are NOT on the floorplan - drew it up last year when I first started thinking about this. We have since gotten a different scanner and I need to figure out how to scan in the new changes. The changes we've already made... island top is 36 inches wide -- makes the sink aisle 1.5 inches narrower than it was... and the walkway aisle 9 inches narrower. And the countertop on the left of the range is now 33 inches wide....See MorePolished granite + marble = too much? Laminated edge?
Comments (8)Hi crzy, You have a really similar color scheme to what we are going with, minus the glaze. We are also doing cream cabinets with a Calcutta gold backsplash. All the soapstones I looked at (and the selection was very limited in my area) were too busy and too green. I also *thought* I had settled on Jet Mist honed granite, (so pretty!) but when I saw it in person, it was too busy with the marble. Also, the gray shade was too "cool" with the warm cream paint and marble. To my surprise, what I finally settled on is Zodiaq quartz in Mystic Black. It is not too shiny, too dull, or too busy. It doesn't have the plastic-y look and feel that some of the other solid surfaces can have. It doesn't show fingerprints or water marks. It is kind of a dark charcoal color. I know there are some beautiful BLACKER soapstones out there, but they were not available in my area. I think in a smaller kitchen, the 2cm looks really nice--maybe even better than the chunkier 3cm if you don't really have any long runs. I know all about the addiction--I started having wrist and neck problems from all the scrolling and clicking hours. Even now, when everything is pretty much settled, I don't want to miss a good tip I could incorporate, so I check every day! Happy planning!...See MoreNeed Design Opinions -How much is too much sparkle??? Pics
Comments (43)I agree with Sue b, I really like the accent tile idea. I had a similar problem, took almost a year to decide. If one more person suggested white subway I was going to scream, just because it was essentially what I had just torn down! I got the same MOP sample as you have, (among others), but ended up with a linear stone backsplash to balance out my "blingy" granite. It provided the calming, organic balance I needed- it makes me happy! Hang in there, you will find what you are looking for!...See MoreGogan granite - too wild or too wonderful?!
Comments (24)The quartz and acrylic products are quite a bit more practical I disagree. Some granites are every bit as practical as engineered stone (aka quartz) and more practical than acrylic. Ours has been a dream to live with. It is the easiest counter to clean that I've ever had even if someone doesn't notice a spill and it dries on. I roll dough directly on it and my dough scraper doesn't scratch it. Granites can be harder to chose because the stone with the same name can vary quite a lot. (Even with some of the engineered stone you may want to approve your slabs because of color variations.) And "granite" as the stone business uses it includes a lot of types of stone such as my Azul Do Mar which is really a quartzite....See Moreazstoneconsulting
