Ugh! DD spilled nail polish remover on new table!!!

I just have to vent. My DD whose 10, spilled a bottle of nail polish remover on my fairly new Pottery Barn kitchen table last night. Needless to say, it removed a lot of the finish on the table top and left a white circle where a glass candle had been sitting in the middle of the table. I just felt defeated - I've been careful with this table to use placemats and tablecloths as I want it to last a while and my DD knew not to polish her nails on the table. Oh well, hopefully I can repair it so it's not so noticeable. It's a wood veneer so I can't really sand it down much. I ordered PB's furniture touch-up kit in the color to match the table so I'll see how that works. It is just a table and there's more important things to worry about in life, right?

Hugs to you! I bet the touch up kit will work - and other folks on here may have other ideas for cover-ups.

You are right - there are more important things in life but as my neighbor and I often say "seriously, can't anything I have stay nice???"

Hang in there, better to vent here than at DD! - :-)

eww, that is awful, almost as bad as my cat ruining my BRAND NEW carpet with soiling. BUt yours was from a human being who does know how bad she messed up. Be mad internally and tell her you expect better(Duh, she had been warned not too) but then get over it. She may just get the bigger picture of responsiblity now. So it could be a "good" thing. Obviously just now so soon as a brand new table!!

I also had new (light colored) granite installed in mid December. About three weeks after the install, we began to notice the green. After much time and effort researching the problem we found out we have green bloom. Our green bloom is around where the fabricator cut out the sink, faucet and soap dispenser. We have had both the stone distributor and the fabricator out to see the problem. Stone distributor confirms it is not a stone problem (no minerals in our stone which would cause green discoloration)! Fabricator insists he didn't do anything to the stone during fabrication that would cause the green! He assured us he does not use the products that cause the green bloom?????? We contacted the Granite and Marble Institute and they confirmed for us that our problem was caused by products used during fabrication. After all the discussions and denials we have decided to try to resolve the problem ourselves using a (recommended) product called Mangia Macchia. The last thing we want is to replace our granite (spending more $$$$ or suing someone and then dealing with the mess of replacement and the problem of finding granite we like again). As we move forward trying to remove the green bloom, it is our understanding that the product needs to be applied multiple times before you see results. We began the first treatment yesterday. We took before and after pictures so we can document the results of what the product does to the green bloom and our sealed granite! If Mangia Macchia does not work we have a bigger problem since our fabricator refuses to admit they are at fault! I will keep you posted as to our progress resolving our horrible green bloom problem. Hopefully, this posting will help others who have experience the same problem and have been told by their fabricator and distributor they never heard of or have seen this situation before!!!!!

Howdy!!! Seems like this thread is relatively active. Not to beat a dead horse but if someone could help, we’d be so appreciative! We are finishing out a kitchen remodel and got our countertops installed Wednesday. We told the salespeople we wanted counters that were as white as possible but we could not do marble because we have five kids and can’t deal with stains or etching. I told them we likely needed granite and that I prefer granite typically. The salesperson sold me on Luce di Luna which I think is the one y’all have mentioned as not actually being quartzite? The person who sold it to us said it was a real stone (unlike quartz) and that it was more practical than marble because it won’t etch/stain and works like granite. We’ve used it for all of 36 hours and I noticed tonight MANY marks (forgive me I forget whether they would be “stains” or “etches”) on the island overhang where said children have sat to eat multiple meals. We are very clean people but didn’t anticipate any issues and thus didnt thoroughly clean the counters till this evening when I unpacked the cleaning supplies that had been boxed up from the remodel. Here’s some photos. So two questions: is there any chance this is indeed quartzite? We took a razor blade to it and saw only a minor scratch that wouldn’t be noticeable. And 2. Assuming this is our new reality, is there any way to repair marks like these so at least we can get a “do-over?” Can’t believe we trusted the “experts.” We are very disappointed and discouraged. As someone in the process of trying to replace a coffee table, I think what you've done here can't be beat. It's such a small change in the room, relatively speaking, but it has such a dramatic, positive impact. I wanted to ask a question too: I'm curious how the mirrored table works with your wonderful chandelier. One of the reasons I steered away from mirrored surfaces in my living room was something I read somewhere on line, that they tended to reflect overhead lighting in a distracting fashion. I don't see that at all in your photos. So now I'm wondering if I've been steering away from bling unnecessarily...anyway just curious what your experience has been.

I am back two years later with another stain:(. Someone left a tray with some gravy underneath that had Tumeric in it on my counter and it has left stains all over in different areas. My counter top is Taj Mahal Quartzite. I cook a lot and have never had an issue with any food stains prior to this. Unfortunately I think the tray sat for a few hours on the countertop and seeped in. Any recommendations that have been tried and tested? I used a poultice in the past for another stain made from dichotomous earth and 40 clear peroxide. But I do not know if it’s ok to use on an oil based Tumeric stain:(. Please help!

oh, this brings back memories....read on...

when i was a teen i was using nair on my legs (yes, that dates me and i can't believe we used to use products to burn the hair off our legs!)

the phone rang and i ran to get it and in the process a blob of the nair fell off my leg onto the brand new carpet my parents just had installed. it left a bleached out white spot on the carpet. my father was very upset and complained about that on many occasions over the next several years. i felt bad at the time but couldn't understand why a year or two later he was still nagging me about it (and now i wonder why he did not get someone to do a patch on it but that is another story).

flash forward 35 years. i am now in my late 40's, a homeowner and totally understand why my dad was so upset! it is so hard to scrimp and save to enable these kinds of home improvements, on top of trying to support a family. i would have been upset too. i feel bad about it today but also recognize it was an accident.

the carpet that i stained has long since been replaced. life goes on but family relationships last forever. my dad was trying to teach me to be more responsible and i appreciate that. my dear dad passed away suddenly three years ago. i sure wish he was with me today - even if he was complaining about the nair spot on the carpet.

Thanks all! I know we all did something similar as kids to anger our parents. I spilled nail polish remover as a teen on my new dresser in my room and I remember how upset my mother was. This dresser is now in my son's room and still has the damaged finish from my "accident" 30 years ago! So I can't be too hard on my DD. I'll let you know how the refinishing goes!

Too bad she didn't spill it on the big red splash on my newish (2 years old) carpet, where my DD dropped a bottle. She dropped it on the tile in the front hall, and it shattered and splattered like crazy, with the largest spot being on the riser of the first step leading upstairs. Of course it was the darkest, reddest polish she had! Extremely noticeable as it's in the front entry way.

My DD felt so horrible that I couldn't really chastise her; just told her to be more careful and not try to carry so many bottles at once. Also, she was carrying down all her polish for ME to look at, because I rarely do my nails but was going on a gal-pal weekend in the city.

The spot bugs me, but reminds me that there is more in life to hold dear than my carpet. As you said... there are other things to worry about, right?

If I look on the bright side, I could remember that it draws my focus away from the woodwork where our puppy had a gnawing spree.
