I am fortunately getting my granite installed today - they are having to cut my backsplash onsite due to some weird sizes in my kitchen (long story). I am bummed because the faucet I bought is missing a piece and now I have to wait 2 to 3 more days to get that before I have water again.

Bummer for me, but I'm really sorry to hear about your problem.

It brings to mind a cautionary note about the more delicate granites and the need for expert installation. In our last home, we used a wonderful dark green with some blue butterfly granite with loads of large reflective pieces. The high-end fabricator had one of the better reputations, but they did not reinforce properly the underside, which eventually wound up cracking along the edge because our Wolf cooktop needed repairs under warranty so had to be removed and installed a few times. After the fact, they did additional reinforcing but I had to live with a hairline crack. I probably could have forced them to replace the piece, but it was the only slab they had, unusually beautiful, for my large island. After all the issues with building, I just didn't want more hassle and figured we could eventually replace had we stayed.

Moral of the story is learn from my mishap and make sure the material not only has reinforcing webbing but is precisely braced, especially where you have a cut-out for something which may need repair up the road.

I chose a lighter, delicate granite also and was going rounds with my installer because he didn't like my choice of sink. He thought the hole would be too large and therefore the granite might crack in transit. I was determined to keep the sink so long story short, the installer offered to cut my sink on site. It worked out beautifully! I'm so sorry yours didn't. At least it sounds like they are going to eat the cost of the slab and you are going to get another one. So you've really only lost out timewise, correct? I spent a month shopping for a different sink (which I never got) before coming to terms with my installer and it was well worth it. Maybe you can suggest they cut the sink hole on-site like mine was done. In any case, I wish you well. It will work out for you.

Sorry to hear about your problem, but really, count your blessings. My granite guy spent three hours installing a cap for my pony wall, and when I went to clean things off with a microfibre cloth, realized there was a break in one of the pieces that he had obviously repaired before he installed it. Long story- I made him replace all the granite (turned out replacement was much nicer- but that's another story!)

I have Butterfly Blue granite, which in my peninsula has also developed a hairline crack- my granite /kitchen company has gone bankrupt (the day they were supposed to be installing the new kitchen counters), so I have decided to live with it, rather than go through the rigmarole and expense of replacing all my kitchen granite. So, abundantblessings- I have a question for you- what did you do about the hairline crack- I have talked to one restoration company, and they have declined to try and fix it.

This happened to me also. Even the strongest granites can break in transit. I ended up choosing a different granite and it all worked out in the end.

OH, I am so sorry to hear that. Our granite is also a delicate one with lots of inclusions, and like Neesie, we had our main sink cut out done on-site. They had a vaccuum on site and there was barely any granite dust. Can you ask your fabricator if they could do that for your next slab?

raehelen, I too checked with a couple of repair companies but both advised that in order to repair it they would have to enlarge the crack before filling. They thought it would be more noticeable. I disagree if it's done well as we had wonderful luck previously when a moving company broke a marble table and it was expertly repaired. But, and this is a biggie I follow always, if the person isn't sure they can do a good job, they can't!

I am sooooooooo sorry. That sucks.

The same thing happened to me, too. I was so bummed. Mine broke on the way to my house. When my contractor told me I thought he was joking. It was no joke. I kept telling myself that after that incident I should have no more issues since it was such a doozy.

On our range cutout, they actually cut most of it out at their site but left a couple strips of granite running across the middle of the space, if that makes sense. Then they just cut out the two strips on site after installing it. I thought it was a nice compromise - the added strips gave stability to reduce risk of breaking, but by not cutting out the entire range space on-site they minimized any dust.

Kitchenredo08, I hope you find another piece of granite that you love just as much, if not more! Hopefully no problems next time.

My granite broke too, but mine was dropped by the installers during installation. They not only broke the granite, they dropped it on my brand new cabinets! And I watched them do it! Talk about a bummer day.

Oh, I am so sorry! I hope your new slab is everything you want. I would check it out before they fabricate it so it looks like the one you wanted. Let us know how it goes.
