Two sofas facing each other - how far is too far apart?
Comments (7)Thanks guys! You've reassured me that at least I have a backup plan that will work. (magnaverde - that picture cracks me up, LOL!) But I think I will try to post a floor plan w/ measurements and some pics at some point (can't do it today - have some family stuff to go to) and get your collective thoughts on what kind of furniture would work in here. Maybe someone here will have the brilliant flash of insight that's been eluding me for 8 years! It's funny that you mention the weirdness of new house layouts becuase although our house is fairly new, it was built to look like a 200 year old farmhouse and many of the things that were added to give that antique charm are also what make the room so hard to furnish (a half-height stone wall along the back of the room, one entire wall taken up by an off-center colonial-styled paneled fireplace with built in closets to each side that hide the entertainment components, a good chunk of the flooring is very bumpy fieldstone - it serves well as a hearth for the fireplace but it's way too lumpy to sit furniture on, etc.) It all looks beautiful, but it really doesn't function for a family who just wants to hang out and watch tv. I will definitely do up a floor plan and some pictures -- hopefully sometime this coming week. Our current furniture is circa mid-90s, navy blue, and overstuffed (ugh, what was I thinking?) -- it served us well, but now that the kids have outgrown the jump-on-the-furniture-stage, I can't wait to replace it. I'm sure I won't have the funds for a while, but it would be nice to have a vision to save toward....See MoreKitchen too far from dining room?
Comments (8)I'm not sure what rooms you have, but we ended up choosing a flipped plan that sounds similar to yours, where the kitchen is a decent distance (20ish or more feet sounds about right) from the formal dining room. In between them we have what we're calling our "family dining" room where we'll put the kitchen table. Our thinking was that we would use the family dining area for most meals and as you said the dining room is used for large groups. In the case where we have that big a group we'll be eating all over anyway, so hopefully it won't matter. I think the main time we'd notice the distance is if we wanted to entertain for 6-8 in the formal dining room, but we don't really do that much. Anyway, we haven't finished yet, so I guess we can't say for sure, but I'm sure hoping that our choice to flip the kitchen works out!...See MoreWall mounted kitchen faucet with 27 inch base cabinets -- too far?
Comments (1)#1 - I dunno. Kohler Karbons have a lot of reach so it should reach the faucet just fine. However, it might not reach to all corners of the sink or as far as you want. You would need to know the depth of the sink and the reach of the faucet to figure that out. You should be able to find that information. #2 - Again, I dunno. Your height, arm length and other personal anatomical features would determine that I suggest mocking up a counter 27" deep and leaning across it to see how far you can reach comfortably without straining....See MoreHelp with kitchen layout - Fridge too far?
Comments (11)Galley kitchens are my very favorite. What do you dislike about the current kitchen? I think I'd simply change to stainless appliances and get a new countertop. Your cabinets look great and are not a really dated style. Perhaps adding rollout shelves behind the doors to the lowers on the left would add more accessible storage for you. Look into Ruggable for some great washable rugs to add just the right amount of color/pattern/texture. Upgrade the ceiling light and add LEDs under all the uppers, plus new hardware and you'll have a super kitchen with half the headaches; no floor removal, plumbing or electric adjustments. It will give you the opportunity for some great upgrades to transform the space with little pain....See MoreTom Carter
