Finished Kitchen! White, Arabesque, Labradorite Multi-Color.

At long last, we have completed our kitchen! This is a gut and remodel. We removed several walls, expanded into the formal dining room and updated the surrounding rooms. The formal dining room has now joined the formal living room. Many thanks to the patient and resourceful GW'ers. I will post "lived in" pictures when the kitchen has been, er, lived in! Here are the pertinent details:

Contractor: Charanza Contracting, Inc. Thank you, Kenneth, Jace and Mark!

Cabinets: Accent Cabinets in Sherwin Williams Snowbound. Thank you, Tammy!

Paint: Sherwin Williams Snowbound on Cabinets, Trim and Ceiling. Full Moon on Kitchen and Breakfast Walls. Blaize on Family Room Walls.

Granite Counters: Labradorite Multi-Color (Antolini Luigi Signature Stone Collection by Master Tile). Dreamy. I stare at it every day.

Backsplash: MT&S White Beveled Arabesque. Thank you, Beekeeperswife!

Appliances: 36" Gas Range, 30" Electric Oven, 30" Warming Drawer, Dish Drawers

(DCS/Fisher & Paykel); 36" Side by Side Fridge (Electrolux); Wine Fridge and Beverage Center (Summit); Microwave (LG Studio Series). So far so good, though too soon to say.

Sink: 40" Double Bowl Fireclay Sink (Alfi). As lovely and giant as I had hoped.

Faucet: Jaclo Steam Valve Original. Love the look of the faucet. Unfortunately, the plumber had to take it apart 3 times in order to achieve a respectable flow.

Hardware: Cliffside Polished Nickel (on Painted Cabinets); Atlas Legacy Crystal (on Stained Cabinets. From HardwareHut. Excellent vendor.

UCL: Kichler Xenon

Pendants: Benson Polished Nickel from Restoration Hardware.

Breakfast Fixture: Access Lighting Lacey Laser Cut Flush Mount.

Pantry Fixture: Trans Globe Lighting Crystal Sparkle Flush Mount.

Floors: Mannington Chesapeake Hickory in Cherry Spice.

Ceiling Fans: The Dagny by Matthews Fan Co. in Brushed Nickel.

On Order: Regal Bar Stools with Back in Charcoal Zodiac (a la The Fonz); LL Bean Chenille Braided Rugs in Vintage Multi.

OK, no pictures yet, but here is where we are at: 1) Installed beadboard (the wood stuff that comes in 6" (or so) tongue and groove strips. 2) It was a pain for our contractor to get it all laid in tight with no seams etc. Cost us more than I had hoped, but still worth it. 3) Painted with oil base primer 4) One coat of oil based topcoat in the same color as our cabinets. It looks very good - we think the verticals in the beadboard go nicely with the vertically fluted columns (which I didn't think would work so well at all). We had bought some Utilitech LED under cabinet lights from Lowes and we returned these as they were 1) not dimmable and 2) Kinda ugly. We are looking to purchase a different set of "softer light" dimmable LED lights so we will only have "landing strip" illumined countertops when DW really wants everything "lit up". Our hope is that with dimmable "soft white" under cabinet LEDs the white beadboard will give us what we want (not too bright, and predictable) until we have time to replace the Staron countertops with some sexy granite or soapstone and a different backsplash. I promise to post pics after the final coat of oil piant and after UC LEDs are in place! At this point we really think the beadboard looks nicer than we had hoped esp. for an interim solution.

Hi mommyatlaw, I have Labradorite "Bianca" on my island and counter tops. It's one of the most spectacular stones I've ever seen - light greyish backround with large jet-black inclusions, and palm-sized(!) iridecsent blue/rainbow pieces running throughout. You can actually see down into some of the inclusions, giving the stone amazing depth. It was love at first sight, and nothing else would do.....despite the price tag. I designed my whole kitchen around it, which runs contrary to conventional wisdom. If you can swing it financially, go with your heart. It's hard to tire of abject beauty. :)

Looking at these samples, it's my preference that "random" be in smaller formats. The patterns in larger tiles that best fit my aesthetic sense are the ones that have a pattern that I can say in words somehow: "each row moves X farther to the left", or something like that. It would seem that to me generally the larger the tile in these samples, the less formal and more in-your-face the wall becomes. The tiles in the nearly-same colorways are less aggressive and stay more in the background. But that's also true of tile in general--there is aggressive color and there is gentle color. At one time I had my heart set on a set of 4" square tiles from HD: off-red, off-green, light blue, golden yellow, and maybe a couple more. (Colors in last year's stock.) I wanted to do a pattern in these of some kind. But then, this was only to be under-cab for two sides of the room and behind the range, one of the decor ideas I enjoyed and then abandoned while waiting impatiently for months of construction to end. You see this kind of effect occasionally and it's always marked "not for the faint of heart." I had samples here and I arranged and rearranged them, but usually came back to a single line and not a whole wall of the multi-pattern. There's a great wall of strong assorted colors in square tiles in the Modest and Quirky thread that many posters really love. Wish you well. Let us see your finished wall?

It's so beeeeyouteeeefulllll

The whole thing is perfect! And of course my eye is drawn to the tile right away. I love that you did the tile all the way to the ceiling. I always wanted to see that done.

It's gorgeous! How long have you had the floors down? I love your lights, especially the pendents and the ceiling light that looks like big diamonds.

love the split island-once you're all up and using your space that will be terrific.I've seen that in a couple articles,wherein the owner needed a remedy for a long dimension and they were wedded to the island concept.Your space is very long isn't it? ...It'll be a lot of fun for you...and you didn't have to do an addition.

That is one nice kitchen! Your granite and other finishes are fabulous. I don't think I've ever seen another kitchen with that much countertop space. I think you should invite your fellow GWers for wine tasting. Looks like you have a nice supply chilling there.
