Slate countertops in northern NJ

Hi,

I like slate countertops in a kitchen and have received a sample of the dark green slate from Sheldon Slate in NY. The sample has responded well to my attempts to stain, scratch, and otherwise abuse it.

But I can find no one in my area (northern NJ) who is familiar with or willing to procure/install slate countertops.

Can anyone provide a recommendation for an installer?

Can Sheldon themselves recommend anyone? Occasionally stone places will send their own teams with the stone. Up here in Maine, I've heard great things about Sheldon slate and their service.

You could also try Vermont Slate; I believe they sell countertop slate and might have installer suggestions as well. If you wind up using a local, I'd veer on the side of finding a soapstone specialist rather than a regular granite installer, because of their greater experience with alternate types of stone.

An update .. We spent ALOT of time, with Annette at Greene & Roth. Alot of time. For a (relatively) small space, G&R packs in alot of product. Most of the displays are on big flip cards, for easy browsing. We chose a Sant'Augustino (Earth Collection) tile floor. We also chose Cesarstone (Linen) for our bath shelves and floor saddle. The Cesarstone material was fabricated by Marble & Granite, in Ridgefield Park, NJ. Our 60" vanity is a Strasserworks (Chocolate Cherry) unit. We're not going to make a final decision on the countertop, until everything else is in place. Kohler sinks and tub, with Grohe Allure fixtures. The dumpster arrives on Monday and the death/destruction of our bathroom will begin shortly after. We're stoked ...

How well does Soapstone/Slate do as countertop??

We are in California and bought our slate countertops from a company in Maine that I heard about on this forum (Sheldon Slate) and had them installed by a local stoneworks co. The kitchen was completed in Spring 2008 - and I just love them! They are a soft greenish grey with some black flecks, honed. I hated busy shiny granite. I can't tell you how many people have complemented them. They do not need to be sealed - they absorb nothing. They will scratch, but rubbing with a wet sponge brings it back to normal. Love, love love the look with our shaker style cherry cabinets. Thought about soapstone but didn't want to go so dark and also heard they were more porous and needed sealing.

Tile installation recommendations in central/northern NJ?

First question -- if you're redoing the kitchen (and I presume that includes cabinets, etc and possibly layout reshuffling) why are you starting with tile? Also, are you sure that tile is the way you ultimately want to go? There's lots of other potential choices in a kitchen reno, and it might help to understand the whole game plan before locking yourself in with such a permanent choice. I would worry that your later reno work might either require you to fill-in/patch or god help us rip it up. And it's not like paint, where it's easy to change. Second, you can check here for tradesmen recommendations, but I'd look into the neighborhood grapevine first. In my town (south orange) there is a vocal and active community website with lots of bulletin boards to discuss happy/not happy experiences with contractors. That helped me greatly in finding a gc. I'd think the same thing with tile. Also check the thread about winkwink's "professional" tile job, which might give you a scare but force you to see your potential tile candidate's actual installations

Thank you all for the suggestions, my apologies for the delay in writing back. I contacted Grothouse Lumber and received my quote today. It's a lot higher than i was expecting, but will hopefully get a quote from Brooks in the next few days for comparison. We aren't doing butcher block, but are looking at plank countertops instead. Chana, i looked at the copper on the Brooks website and love them, but know they aren't in our budget. I just splurged on copper flashing for the outside chimney and Yankee gutter trim and ouch - copper is super expensive right now! Thanks for the eye candy, though! ;) Jen

Our architect recommended Burlington stone for counters, which is, I believe, a kind of slate mined in the Lake District in England. It is available in NJ through Stone Source:

We haven't made a decision on counters yet: I'm still torn between soapstone, quartz, marble, and slate.
