N. NJ/NYC area - wood countertop recs?

Can anyone recommend a wood countertop manufacturer in the Northern NJ or NYC area? I have only heard of New England Wood Countertops, but would like to speak with more than one company.

If you are looking for butcher block, you might try LL Johnson in Michigan. We ordered our 12 X 3' island top from them and even with shipping it was much cheaper that getting it locally here in Houston.

For what you are describing you might want to look at Holsag barstools...good bang for your buck! The barstools are commercial grade European beech construction, come in 7 different heights, choice of brass or chrome or no footrests, they have 28 different finishes and 90 seat fabric or vinyl choices. The delivery for me was faster than promised. I used this brand at my high top breakfast nook table and they were indestructible while my sons were living at home. The other great thing is that the stain goes into the wood like it should. I looked at many a barstool where I could scrape off the finish with my finger nail. These stools look a 1000 times better in person than they look on web sites, in person you can see the quality and feel the weight. Note: There is a huge difference in prices on these stools from site to site. If you see a style you like do a search of the chair name,make sure it's a Holsag though.

Granite yard/fabricators recs in NJ

For granite yards in central jersey - 1) there's OHM in Monroe - indoors which may help when trying to see what it will look like inside. You need an appointment so call ahead. 2) Also in the same area, try European in Jamesburg. I almost got my granite from them - I like them because they are really picky and honest about their slabs. If it's not a good slab, they'll tell you. 3) Cosmic stone in New Brunswick. They had a large selection and some really nice slabs but not in the stone I wanted. 4) Ankur in Jamesburg or Monroe (you can google their website.) I didn't get there because they were closed when I needed to find a slab, but several people here got great slabs there at good prices. 5) MSI in Edison. I ended up getting my granite there at the last minute. They were ok, but not as helpful as I'd have liked. The didn't want to move slabs around without a lot of persistence, even when there was clearly a different lot in the back. For fabricators, I used Natural Stone and granite in N. Brunswick. They were fine - reasonably priced and fast. But I don't know if I'd use them a more complex job. In my case, I didn't need seams because of the layout. I almost went with Stone Surfaces of Central NJ in New Brunswick. I heard good things about them and they have a great rating with BBB. They were pricier though. If I were doing it over again, I think I'd go with Benchmark for fabricating. They have offices in Lakewood and in north jersey somewhere (can't remember.) You can e-mail them and they will give you a quote based on your layout. They have a decent showroom and work with many of the large granite yards. I've never heard a bad story about them. They use laser templating and seem to do a very good job with seams, matching etc. Their pricing was about the same as stone surfaces. good luck, and have fun!

Beautiful Monomoy! Love your subway, very different! Ok so here are some updated pictures. Whole kitchen, iphone pic so I could fit it all (there is also a large pantry room to the right which I will post in the final reveal) and here are some clearer ones with my proper camera You can see the floor a bit better here and I think this is the tile we are going with (without the white bit at the bottom). It's a Mexican hand painted tile. This is the 2x8 size. Debating wether to go with 3x6 or this one? Thoughts? So we still kind of hate the floor, I think it's because I miss the warmth of wood. Seriously considering ripping it out and laying hardwood. I hope I grow to like it!!!

Love all your choices. My only suggestion would be to do a different backsplash behind the range because the grooves design will trap the splatters from the cooktop. A stainless steel panel backsplash behind the cooktop which meets the hood will add sparkle and shine, is practical for that area, and is very reasonably-priced. There are also stainless steel backsplashes for behind the range that come in patterns - quilted (for that diner look), tile pattern, all sorts of looks - just google "stainless steel backsplash". Or just do the standard stainless steel panel for simplicity and a clean look. You could also use your soapstone as a panel behind the cooktop. That will look sharp, but add $$$.

Brooks Wood in Mt. Kisco NY - awesome people, amazing product - super easy to work with - did it all over the phone and then they came to me (outside Boston) to template and later deliver/install. Highly recommend!

Depending on what you want, blocktop.net makes a nice counter and was among the lowest quotes I got. Grothouse was one of the highest. If you are joining it to another type of surface, direct templating would probably be best.

Brooks! That's the other one I was trying to think of. Jen, on their site take a look at their copper countertops...that's another option you could consider for your perimeter.

I have Ash countertops from Grothouse and I LOVE them! Very superior quality compared to the others I have seen. Good luck.

Thank you all for the suggestions, my apologies for the delay in writing back. I contacted Grothouse Lumber and received my quote today. It's a lot higher than i was expecting, but will hopefully get a quote from Brooks in the next few days for comparison. We aren't doing butcher block, but are looking at plank countertops instead.

Chana, i looked at the copper on the Brooks website and love them, but know they aren't in our budget. I just splurged on copper flashing for the outside chimney and Yankee gutter trim and ouch - copper is super expensive right now! Thanks for the eye candy, though! ;)

prices for wood tops varry off the map. Wood species thickness of the top and the pattern the wood is glued makes a difference in cost. Signatures starts at $40 a sqft and up. I sell them out of my store.
