Can I see a picture of your trash pull out ?
Comments (38)schicksal- what kind of garbage bins are those? I really like them! oh, to answer the original question. no pic yet because my pulls are on backorder, however I chose an extra long pull for my garbage/recycle pullouts (12"). There is no drawer above it (I have outlets above my trash pullout). I chose the extra long pull for two reasons: 1) easy to pull open (I guess I was thinking no matter where you grab the handle is there) 2) can hang a towel on it the pull does match the other pulls in the kitchen though, as far as style...See Morehow to replace trash compactor with pull-out trash? need cabinet?
Comments (9)Sorry to bump this after so much time. Here's a picture of the trash compactor. This is the pull out trash/recycling system that I want. http://www.pullsdirect.com/rev-a-shelf-5349-2150dm-2-5349-series-double-50-quart-pull-out-waste-container-with-soft-close-slides/p1573591. It says that it fits in a 15 inch width cabinet. It took me this long to contact a few custom cabinet makers in my area. 2 of them have told me that to replace the trash compactor with the double pull out trash/recycling that I want, I would need to not only have a cabinet door/face, but also they'd need to create a cabinet box and a frame too. However, by doing this, the width of the side of the cabinet box would mean that they wouldn't be able to put in the pull-out that I want, which needs a width of 14.8 inches (the trash compactor is 15 inches), so I'd need to select a different one, which would have a much smaller bin size. The one I want has 2 50 quart bins, and I would have to go down to 2 27 quart bins, I think, to get it to fit, which is a big difference. I'm also talking to a third custom cabinet guy who said that there might be a way to be able to put in a "floor" to where the trash compactor was, so he could install the double pull out I want (which is bottom mounted, not side mounted) without any sides, and then put some type of frame at the top only, so something that the cabinet door could rest against while closed, but said he'd have to think about how to create it, and get back to me. I'm waiting to hear from him to see if he's thought of something that would work. In addition, the price estimates I've gotten so far were substantially higher than I was expecting. Alison, I'd love to know the details of how you and your dh did this. Did you add a whole cabinet box? If not, what did you mount your pullout to, and what does your door rest against? I would appreciate any ideas. Thanks! Here is a link that might be useful: rev-a-shelf double pull out...See MoreCan I hack a trash pull-out from an Ikea 15 inch depth cabinet base
Comments (19)The left is mounted on the side panel and the right is mounted on a special piece that IKEA sold for this application. Don't know if they still sell it, but I'm sure it could be reproduced. The center piece is basically a 1 1/2" piece of MDF that extends the depth of the cab and is secured at the back and front to the bottom of the cab. It functions as a short cab wall and I have a drawer rail mounted on both sides. In your case you could position in where you need to achieve your right wall. I hope I'm explaining this clearly enough, but hope this pic helps. I can take more pix tomorrow if that will help you. Comments (21)"...do you think I should put the sink across from the fridge?" I wouldn't because you'd lose counter space directly across from the fridge and pantry. That's where I set groceries down to put them away and where I set items I've just taken out of the fridge and pantry. Plus that aisle is less generous because of the fridge so you could be doing more butt bumping when you're at the sink and someone wants something from the fridge. And yes, definitely consider a single bowl sink for your clean-up sink. I went from a double bowl to a single bowl and I love it! I'd never go back to a double bowl again. I have a very large sheet pan soaking in my sink right now (roasted veggies for dinner last night). It would never have fit inside one side of my double bowl so I'd have to soak it on the counter. Since you prep at your island, it makes sense to have your trash at the island, too, unless that means that you're giving up much needed cabinet space in your island. If you got a single bowl with an offset drain for your clean-up sink, you'd have more than enough room for a larger trash bin under your clean-up sink. Something to consider: put your trash on the left and your sink on the right. That moves your sink away from the edge and moves the trash closer to the clean-up sink. You'd still have quite a bit of room to prep at your island, plus someone could prep on the short end, too. I needed 4 bins: trash, glass recycling, mixed recycling and returnables. My trash and glass recycling is under my sink and my mixed recycling and returnables are in a pull-out in my island across from my sink (my sink is diagonally across the aisle to the right). I prep between sink and cook top (to the right of my island) and at the island. These trash pull-outs are convenient to prep in both locations. Hope the above makes sense. Still fighting this bloody cold....See Morejakabedy
