20 gauge Kindred sink help!!

I ordered a 20 gauge SS undermount,double bowl sink. I needed something 30 inches wide or less. Is 20 gauge going to look and hold up okay or should I try to find a reasonably priced 18 gauge which can fit a 30 inch sink cabinet?

You can definitely find a lower gauge (heavier) SS sink that will fit in your cabinet. Can you return the one you ordered? Many on this forum have Ticor brand sinks that can be delivered in 3 days and have every shape/size you could ask for. I got my sink (that included the grids) for around $260

Mary04, I responded to your question in the "cheap vs. expensive sink" thread. My response was similar to Mountaineergirl's, and I provided a couple of links. There are likely other sinks that people can recommend here, but can you specify whether you are looking for single or double bowl?

I have been going coo coo lately trying to find a sink. I have one I bought two mos ago , ADKY, that already has rust in the brushed stainless grooves on the upper left lip that sits ON the countertop. Now that is just not gonna work. I have learned more than I wanted to have to learn at age 72. Check out the reviews on these sinks and you will be flabbergasted. Much of the talk here has been about gauge and sound quieting when the main talk should be about how easy these stainless steel sinks rust and scratch so easily. It is just not acceptable. I removed an old SS sink that NEVER had rust issues whatsoever to place the new one that is rusting . I will just not tolerate it being there. That is when my search began and I sadly discovered how the sink makers are ripping us all off. Why can't they make them like the older ones anymore???? 304 is standard and it rust extremely easy. The majority of sinks out there are 304 mixture. The next marine-grade would be 316. Not easy to find in the style you may be looking for but it corrodes less easily and I assume is pretty rust-resistant. At the moment I have a 33” x 22 “ Workstation Topmount / Drop-in Nano Black Stainless Steel Sink, 16-Gauge Bowl w/ Integrated Ledge in my sites. They say it is made with premium 16-gauge Nano black stainless steel and the deck is made with an extra-thick 9-gauge 4 mm Nano black stainless steel. Nao black stainless steel also offers rust-proof long lasting durability, performance and lustrous beauty. Moreover, Nano black stainless steel repels water and more dirt resistance than normal stainless steel – easier cleaning and maintenance! It has a 9-gauge deck. It has nano-PVD finish, the stainless steel is overlayed with a colored mat finish that is resistant to wear and abrasion. The finish has a matte texture that is fingerprint and stain resistant. They claim it will never rust or tarnish. I may be willing to find out lol. Hi suzatwork, Sorry I missed your original post from June 3rd! It was a shock to pull up GW tonight and see this old thread from early April at the top of the list again! :-) So... I can answer your question. After much hemming and hawing and debating and mild cussing and indecisiveness, I wound up going with the Ticor S105-8. My debates back and forth were so inconclusive that I wound up putting a picture of both sinks (S105-8, 405D) side by side in a single JPEG on my webserver and showing them to about a dozen different friends/family members. About 8 or 9 voted for the S105-8, and about 3 or 4 voted for the Ticor. It truly came down to this: do the benefits of the huge 21" left sink outweigh the negatives of the small 10" right sink? In the end, to me, they did not. Now, as of two days ago, my countertop and S105-8 sink are installed! :-) I will say this much, after seeing the sink in-person, in place: it is plain as day to me that a 10" right sink would be very difficult to use in any normal fashion. Normal plates (often about 12" wide) would not fit whatsoever -- you'd basically be resigned to using it purely for soaking silverware or peeling potatoes (if you do that sort of thing in a sink), etc. Is the 17-3/4" left of the S105-8 big enough? I sure think so. It's significantly bigger than most any other non-single bowl sink I've seen --- most people I know seem to have 50-50 double bowls that are 15" wide or so. Not having used my sink yet, of course, I won't know for sure for a little longer. My thoughts at this point however --- I am very glad I got the S105-8, and I would probably get a huge single bowl sink before getting the 405D, simply because I can't picture that tiny 10" right side being useful in very many situations. Obviously a number of people here on GW have the 405D and love it so I am by no means slamming the 405D -- it just truly comes down to "how do you use your sinks?" Frankly and honestly? My biggest regret is not making the center kitchen cabinet wider -- if I could do it over again, I would have made the kitchen cabinet larger than 36", and instead gotten a 2-bowl that was like 22" on the left and 14" on the right (if something like that exists!) But my kitchen's shape is funky and I'd lose valuable counterspace if I did that, so, in the end, I'm really quite happy with the choice of the S105-8. The 17-3/4" left bowl seems perfectly large enough to me, and it is DEEP too, since it's an undermount sitting underneath a 3cm thick slab of soapstone. The one question you have to ask yourself, before getting the S105-8: "do I have to be able to lay most large cookie sheets completely flat on the bottom of my large sink for soaking purposes?" If so, the S105-8 is not for you. It seems there's a good number of cookie sheets that are 18-20" long, and so they will not lay flat in my sink. Does that irk me at all? Yeah, probably a little. They would fit and lay flat in the 405D. But... in the end, that positive didn't outweigh the negative of a really tiny right sink that is narrower than my 11" foot (!) How many times am I really going to have the need to soak a cookie sheet underwater like that? I use aluminum foil over my cookie sheets when i bake anyways, so having to soak crud off them is not really a concern. So, after this long-winded response that probably as you bored to tears :-) .... in the end, I'm glad I went with the S105-8 over either the 405D or a large single bowl, and am happy with the choice. But to me the ideal is to have a 42" sink cabinet and get the best of both worlds -- at least 22" on the left, and maybe 16" on the right, something like that. :-) I've promised sw_in_austin and a few others that I'll have pics up today or tomorrow, so you can see then for yourself what it looks like. We have the Kindred "big single" (27", so it is not that huge) sink in our kitchen, for almost 5 years. It has been great; durable, I scrub it when it needs it, and we do a lot of cooking with heavy pans (cast iron, Le Creuset, etc.). It has held up beautifully. We do have the sink grid, which has been helpful when draining pasta, and cleaning pans (so they are not sitting in the dirty water.) It seemed expensive at the time, but I don't think a more expensive sink could have performed any better.

...and with the wrong answers. A 20A breaker doesn't required a particular kind of wire, it's the 14G wire that precludes a large breaker than 15A. If there is more than one single receptacle on the 20A circuit, they can be 15A. The statement about light switches is completely false. There's no requirement that light switches be wired with 15A circuits or 14 gauge wire, and frankly there's nothing that precludes you from putting 12g on the 15A breaker either. Kitchen COUNTERTOP RECEPTACLES and bathroom RECEPTACLES. Not all OUTLETS. Further, there are a five more places that require GFCI for 15 and 20A 120V receptacles by code (laundry, unfinished basement, garage, near sinks, boathouses, outdoors, and in crawl spaces) and his guidance of "moisture places" doesn't strictly hold true. There are a few other special requirements for places like pools, animal barns, etc... but those aren't normally encountered inside dwellings.

Oh, I just realized you DID say you wanted a double bowl sink (sorry I missed that). Well, my post on the other thread shows several from Ticor that are 16 gauge and double bowl. However, if you are going to return the Kindred, you may want to consider a single bowl sink. Because you are limited to a 30" base, any double bowl sink will have bowls that won't fit a roasting pan, cookie sheet or large pot. I have a single bowl sink and love it. Of course many prefer the double bowl sink, but most people with a double bowl sink choose one that fits in a larger cabinet base.

Normally, I'm an advocate of double-bowl sinks, but that's if you have a sink base at least 33" wide. I think w/a 30" wide sink base, I would recommend a single-bowl sink. If you have your heart set on a double-bowl, then at least be sure the large bowl is big enough to fit most of your dishes and the small bowl is big enough to be useful.

My double-bowl sink has bowls 21.5" and 10.5" wide and I find both very useful. But, I have a 36" sink base.

I regret ordering this sink since it is 20 gauge, but if I cancel my order I will have to pay a 25% and maybe as much as 50& cancellation fee. I will never order through Ira Woods again unless they compromise and reduce the cancellation charge. Has anyone had experience returning items ordered at Ira Woods online?

Consumer Reports has maintained for sometime that you don't see much difference in performance between 16-20 gauge. My Mom but a 20 guage, double bowl overmount (not many manufacturers do 20 gauge undermounts and I have to say I don't think I would do an undermount that was more than 18) in her new kitchen and it has performed very well. It doesn't flex and gauge has no impact on appearance or wear (I have a very cheap sink - 22 or more - that flexes in my condo but it hasn't worn out in 25 years of use). If you don't stand on a stool and drop rocks into your sink I wouldn't be too concerned about having a 20 gauge sink.

My Mom's reno isn't fancy but I always thought she got a nice look by doing a deckless overmount with a brushed finish.

Your Mom's sink is lovely. Why wouldn't you do a 20 gauge sink in an undermount install?

It would probably be just fine but not many manufacturers offer them and because it isn't supported on all 4 sides the way a drop in is I might worry. Those that do offer 20 gauge undermounts offer the same guarantee as with their other sinks but I'm not sure I would chance it. Better safe than sorry.

Mary, MRDirect is another shopping alternative. They have a lot of 16 gauge sinks at very reasonable prices, many under $100. Esp. since you want an undermount, I'm presuming that it will be installed in a solid surface where it's not going to be easy to change at a later date.

Sinks & faucets are the hardest working 'appliances' in your kitchen. It's easy to upgrade faucets but replacing a sink involves so much--disposals, drains--and may be next to impossible in an undermount situation. (Does your sink base have a face frame that narrows the cabinet opening or a vertical stile between two doors?) IMO, easier & much cheaper to get it right at the get-go even if it means a little backtracking right now.

As others have already mentioned, I encourage you to give a lot of thought to getting a single bowl sink. Much better to have one really roomy sink vs 2 skimpy bowls, IMO.
