Strand bamboo floor

I also posted this in the flooring section.

We are going to install strand bamboo in our kitchen and dining roon which will be all one floor. I have samples from Morning Star and Teragren. Morning Star is 5/8" thick and seems OK. Teragren is 1/2" thick and seems to be very dense. Does anyone have any thoughts on either brands or experence using them?

We installed the Teragren through out most of our home. I love the look but, we do have small dogs and I can see the scratches, it also seems to dent fairly easily. We had oak at our previous home and I think it seemed to be more forgiving. I am not sure I'd put it in a kitchen, If you dropped a can or pot I'm sure you'd get a dent in it.

Teregren is rated highest on consumer reports and preferred bamboo for commercial applications. It is really pretty and dense - I'm surprised to hear about the dents/scratches, but frankly aren't we going to get that with any flooring? If you live anywhere near Chicago, they have a Smarthome at the Museum of Science and Industry with the Teregren installed. It's on the whole second level so you can visualize better than a sample. As much as I wanted to go with it, I think it is over our budget (which I've already completely blown!). Good luck!

Hi, I'm investigating bamboo flooring as well, and I see that Consumer Reports ranks the Teragren Synery as number two behind EcoTimber Woven strand. I've haven't checked all the prices, but it seems like it might be worth while investigating. Good luck. Holly

I've never used their floating floor, but since my first bamboo installation back in...'95 or '96...Terragren is my first choice. It's just been so much better than any of the competition out there. I did browse through their floating floors to get the above link, and it looks like their floating floors trend towards darker palettes. Best, Mongo

I have been using my Eureka steam mop. I really like it! I either sweep OR I use my Hoover Linx first, then use the steam mop. I like not having any chemicals or smells when I clean (well, that's not true, I love the smell of bleach but I can't use that on the floor!) hoover linx (I REALLY love this thing! Only has 15 minutes of battery life, then battery takes 3 hours to charge. Bamboo in Florida these days? Choose what you like, but it's been on the way out for years. Harder? Ya, know when I first got into this business I never heard how hard a hardwood floor was. Nobody chose floors that way. Of course back in those days it was red oak and maybe some Maple here and there. My opinion is the internet created the 'hey I need the hardest wood floor." Granted strand is tough, but I wonder how somebody could work with (all the resins used to create it) it if you wanted to change the color down the road or Fido did dig intro it. Some hardwoods work better than others in disguising the inevitable scratches, dings and dents. Some folks can be obsessive. Read some of the chatter here and there. I have Teragren floors and love them. I have noticed small scratches, but I have a handy floor marker to cover them. As for dents, we are careful and accidents do happen, but nothing has made a dent that is noticeable.
