Oxalic acid is used in the polishing and finishing of marble. Admittedly, if used improperly it will do damage, if used correctly they will be, as I stated, as white as they can possibly be. Hint: don't soak overnight. Hint #2: apply sparingly and as soon as it is clean, rinse thoroughly. The only reason I'm suggesting oxalic acid is because from the photo, it's clear that the grills do not have a highly-polished finish to begin with. It would not be appropriate to use acid on polished marble. You would have to use a peroxide treatment, but that only affects organic staining, and is ineffective on rust. Casey

How nice to find a service like that. I have asked our local marble company if they could send someone out to help restore the appearance of our bathroom marble, circa 1968 and the victim of a rabid cleanser user in 1970. He told me nobody does that kind of work. But, he leers, now, if I'd tear out my cabinets and bring in the marble myself, he would consider shooting me a bid, probably over $500 for a 3-foot section of bathroom vanity. What a jerk!

Here's what our fabricator did: Before counter installation: this was an existing window and we didn't move it. The distance from the countertop to the bottom of the window opening would be less than an inch. Right after the counter and window sill were installed. Our fabricator laminated a piece of material of the thickness needed to the bottom of the sill - similar to what is done when making the counter edge. I think it would look right under each window as an extension of the sill and ending where the sill ends like ours does or under the whole group of windows. It may be easier to fabricate doing it the first way as it would be a very long thin piece for one piece to extend under all 5 windows. It looks like your filler will have to be thinner than your granite slabs so it may be difficult/expensive for the fabricator to make it extend much wider than the sill for the stacked appearance you want. Our fabricator did say that he was able to make thin pieces with our stone that can't be made with every stone when he made the thin pieces to trim our rangetop. He fabricated these pieces which are less than 1/2" high and ~3/4" wide (the slab thickness) and a bit over 2' long to fix a slight error they made when making the rangetop cut out. But I think the thin piece for the window sill wasn't as much of a concern for him because it was laminated onto the sill when it was made and didn't have to be carried around separately like the rangetop trim pieces.

Renee you must be overwhelmed with all of these comments. Your countertops are GORGEOUS, so I do hope you keep them. Sophie's suggestion to stain the floors is well worth looking into. For what it is worth my suggestion for your backsplash is to go with a simple solid tile in a lighter color that coordinates with the countertop. I would suggest you not go too small with the tile- 3x6 to 4x12 would be a good size to stick with. You want to avoid too much movement in the backsplash as the counter (and the floor) have quite a bit of movement and you do not want them competing. Let the countertop be the star of the show.
