Island question- 1 Height, v. Mixing table & counter height
Comments (17)I am putting an island in my kitchen. I will have 2 levels. At it's widest the island will be 42" deep. The length is 87". The raised section will have a slight curve to allow for seating (though I am going back and forth about not doing a curve and doing straight across for more space - though I like the idea of the softness of the curve....). I will have a prep sink on one end and my mixer lift on the other. Next to the 15" cabinet for the mixer lift I will have 30" base drawers. Since I will be using this area for baking, I am having built into the toe-kick of the 30" cabinet a step I can pull out and stand on while I am rolling dough. My DH insisted on the raised section to allow him to do prep work (he's taller than I am and the raised area is at the perfect height for him to work). I also like the idea of the kids and the water being on different levels. Unfortunately I think this is one aspect of my kitchen I won't know if I like until it is installed, and then as they say, the horse will have left the barn and I will have to learn to live with what I decide..... I don't have to make a decision this minute but very soon....See MoreCopper counter or SS counter owners...question!
Comments (15)I'm sure you are all aware of the danger of copper residue ingestion, but just in case... As a historic reenactor specializing in Gt. Lakes fur trade, I encounter a lot of copper, esp. nested kettles. Our club makes a point of using copper and brass containers for cooking only if they are tinned inside. We can use them for water holding, even drinking water, but if any acid food or similar substance gets to eating at the copper, it can create something that can poison us. Having once drunk cider from a container of silverplate on copper that must have had some verdegris along a scratch in the silver, all I can tell you is plan to be sick to your stomach, very sick. And that's if you are lucky. If this had gone on a lot longer before I drank, am not sure what I would have done. Water in copper pipes is safe to drink and candy or popcorn made in a brass or copper kettle is standard practice. I know a lot of people cook eggs and sauces in copper containers. Just be cautioned about chemical reeactions. On another note, am very curious as to whether anyone knows much about zinc sinks and countertops. These were common a century ago, I believe....See Morewarming up a kitchen w/ stainless steel counters?
Comments (19)One way of being warm is by using warm colors. Sounds obvious, but the difference can be really striking. You didn't say what color the glass tile backsplash will be. Or what color you were thinking of for the range. Bluestar number 8023 and 8004 are very warm without being primary, and most of the colors under 5000 are also warm. If you coordinate your backsplash tiles with one of them, the kitchen can't help but have a warm feeling, even if you painted the cabinets ice blue :) On the other hand, icy, wintry colors are going to give you that cold look that you don't want, so stay away from pale blues and purples, greys, browns and blacks. You can also warm up the room with bright, cozy accents, in warm colors, like a cookie jar, fun clock, or bright colored small appliances. The trick to making it not look industrial is first to have a few things out, rather than all put away like you would in a sterile environment, and then to be sure the things you do display are broken up in color, rather than monotone. I chose to post the items below because they show the principle of broken up color. Whatever your taste is you can do this, except if it's "clean, industrial", since that's what you're trying to get away from. Basically a "warm" look is opposite to a "clean" look....See MoreDark cherry island..black countertop too dark?
Comments (55)Thank you, thank you! I have been so rude not getting back here to update. Distracted by picking out lights for a whole house is overwhelming me and starting to really drive me crazy. But on a positive note I took all of your good advice and made progress on the countertop front. I went to the stone place in our town. They had a small sample of the London Sky. It was really beautiful and looked a lot like Marble. A better choice than a lot of quartz that I have looked at. But it was a little too gray for my white cabinets. i went back to the brushed via lactea slabs with my dark cherry door in hand and try as I might not to I had to admit that it was too dark. I hated that because I adored this brushed stone and it is my first choice but I have to listen to the good advice I got here. Sometimes I think the folks here know more than the professional ids. then I found two quartz samples that I really liked all while my granite gal told me that they had some Taj Mahal that I could look at since I had never seen it in person. My eyes must have lit up and she warned me that it will be higher than my via lactea. I was excited about seeing it anyway. just for the heck of it I asked her if she had any Imperial Danby since I loved the slab shown up thread...knowing I really could not choose it. But, still I felt like I needed to see it if she had it. She told me no that she didn’t and that knowing me it was a good thing not to fall for something I should not have. so, my kd and my granite gal and I took the hike out to the Taj Mahal with my door samples and the 2 quartzes I liked in hand. here is the result. The Taj Mahal is beautiful. I love it. Now if only I can justify the $$. Waiting for the price. Thank you all so much....See Morekatieob
