Backsplash to compliment Kashmir White granite countertops

We renovated our kitchen this summer. The previous owners last renovated in 1979 so you imagine what it looked like. This was a big job. The cabinets are cherry, the counter is Kashmir white granite and the floors are Brazilian cherry with a maple border. It is beautiful. However, I had a really tough time choosing the backsplash and ended up (after purchasing tile and exchanging it) with 1 in X 2 in glass tiles in a random pattern. The tiles look almost like sea glass in color - green, blue and yellow. The tile guy did a good job but the grout is too dark (we asked for one shade darker than white and it must be several shades darker). I really like the tile and I love my countertops but they don't seem to go together. I can't quite decide if its the tile against with the counter or just the grout (I tend to think the problem is both). After all the work in the kitchen I am ready to redo the whole backsplash because it just doesn't seem to work together. The backsplash is important since it is so visible.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I would like feedback on a backsplash that works with what I've described above.

Sorry to read of your disappointment. I have one of the white granites and used a matching white subway tile in a crackle finish. In my case, it also works with my creamy white raised panel cabinetry.

I'm so sorry you're having these regrets. It would really be helpful if you could post pics. It's almost impossible to help you without seeing it... at least for me... I"m so visual.

I don't like the 4" backsplash for the following reasons: - if you are doing a decorative tile for the rest of the backsplash, you are now decreasing and cutting off your design area by 4". - the 4" creates a little "shelf" that gets dusty, just one more thing to clean. - added expense to install the 4" piece of granite along your countertop. - people who say you "need it" to cover a gap between the countertop and the tiled wall just don't have good installers. My kitchen walls are extremely out-of-plumb, but my tile backsplash meets my granite countertop with no gaps cause I had experienced installers. - IMHO it looks dated, since the 4" idea was popular with formica in the '70's. I would only do a 4" backsplash if I were doing no other backsplash at all and just leaving drywall on the rest of the wall. And even in that case, I'd try to make it a little higher, like 5" or 6".

It's a pretty busy stone. I like to take one of the colors in the stone, and choose a ceramic or glass tile in that shade. Since you also have cherry cabs, you would want to use complementary colors. What is your budget? With these elements, my ceramic pick would be tiles from the Fireclay Vitrail series: Ultra cream Brisee From their Crush glass tile series, I'd go for Camelia Willow If you want a mosaic, I would suggest using one with random sized bricks, but a single color, so as not to compete with your stone. Thanks for the ideas and pics remodelfla and jb1176. I took a look at Lisa's oatmeal tile and subway backsplashes, and really thought they both looked beautiful in her home. I've actually been leaning towards using a plain white subway, but I believe my husband would like some color in the mix. I also really like (but not sure these would look good in my kitchen): ljsandler's diamond backsplash... meg's subway tile... Would a white subway or diamond tile work in my kitchen? I don't have as fancy a kitchen as Lisa, LJSandler or Meg. I'm still open to color, but I've visited a few tile stores and am having a heck of a time finding a tile that really picks up a color in the granite. There are so many beautiful stone tiles that just look too gold/yellow to suit this granite. Sigh, this little decision seems to be consuming so much of my time lately.

Yes, please post pictures. Your color scheme sounds almost identical to mine, and if your tile is what I'm imagining, it's a good choice. It may be that you can regrout or fade the color of grout that's there. If you're interested in that option, you should do a new post with a title that says you're interested in lightening grout. There's a few tile gurus (Bill V) that visit this forum and may be able to help.
