Kitchen in Action- Wedding Edition

Just thought I'd share a few pics from our wedding we had here last weekend. The large island was absolutely wonderful- everyone spent quite a long time standing around it! We were also able to do the cake cutting right on the end of the island and there was room for everyone to stand around (we only had 25 people, so it was a reasonable number).

We turned the kitchen table in the breakfast nook sideways and set up a bar, and the crepe makers set up their table in the main part of the nook. There was plenty of room for everyone to mingle and I didn't even stress about etches in the countertop at all! For anyone considering blue bahia granite but afraid that it might etch, I would not worry about it- there were a few minor spills and the counter felt super sticky after the party, but after cleaning w/ Method cleaner, it looks absolutely perfect again.

There was one frightening moment when DH's brother opened a champagne bottle and the cork flew towards the chandies, but miracle of miracles, nothing got hit and all was well!

And, the puppies got dressed up for the occasion of course! They were in heaven since people kept sneaking them food!

The other thing that was absolutely wonderful during the party was having the fridge and freezer drawers on the end of the island. We completely stocked them w/ beer and soda so everyone was able to help themselves without needing to open the main fridge area.

How fabulous to see all your plans working!.

I'd love to see you and your man in your wedding clothes. Were they blue to match the kitchen? [LOL]

It looks lovely and fun. Your puppies are sweet.

when dh and i were first married i put out a plate of spaghetti and meatballs for him. he went to the bathroom to wash out and when he returned the meatballs (three, very LARGE meatballs) were GONE. we found the cat licking her chops trying to clean the tomato sauce from her furry face. of course she's partial to bacon as well. she is now 16 years old and realllllllly FAT. cute doggy!

Well, we bought a house in the next neighborhood because I happened upon it one spring day when we were trying to decide whether to remodel our current home and it made more sense than remodeling, financially and in terms of what the house gave us. But I didn't change schools for the kids (that was a big one for us) and we weren't making a lifestyle change. Looks like they are both great neighborhoods, so you just need to decide which one fits you best now and for the coming years. Based on dream house and dream neighborhood, I was ready to say I'd take another look at the house to figure a few things out and then probably make an offer before someone else snaps it up. BUT, it sounds like you aren't sure whether you want to trade neighborhoods or make the city/not-so-city (hard to tell what just outside downtown means) and you say having to buy a car is a big drawback. I think that is at the heart of your decision, and in spite of your saying it's not a real scenario, you say DH loves the house and you sure seem to be twisting your hair over this, so to speak. If you want to make the change, I think you have to see the house and make sure you agree, and the two of you, possibly with a contractor in tow, need to go look at the house with a serious "does it really work for us and will it add to our lives together" attitude. The contractor would be there to tell you whether muct move walls are load bearing, help you figure out the mystery jog, spot major obstacles to ideas you might have or help you spot possibilities you might not see. Keep in mind that contractor being there doesn't mean you have to do anything before you move. Our realtor suggested we move in and live with the kitchen 6 months to a year before we did anything to make sure of how it really worked for us. We did, and life took over, so 5 months turned to 4 years, but instead of replacing counters and appliances, we went to the studs and redid cabinets and all. I wouldn't not have been willing to do that had we not waited. We also put money aside while we thought about it and took care of other things, so it was easier to do what we wanted when we figured it out. Time and planning are valuable assets when doing a kitchen. I think there are possibilities there, but from the limited photos, you can't develop anything more that rough ideas and a list of questions. Finding out what is behind the mystery jog would be key to any plans taking shape, but even if that can't change, you could stack a W/D or possibly relocate them and gain a lot of space. I'd also look at moving the patio door over to the right and putting a pantry and fridge on the wall where the door to the laundry is now -- a walk-in if the laundry can be moved, cabinet depth of not. All the sudden, you could be looking at a U-shape with a modest island in the same space. I don't think you need an addition, just better space planning. For me, this is definitely just looking. I can't even look or kick the tire. But what are you thinking?

There's been a lot of fussing in western countries lately about how to deal with the major economic problems that beset our countries. Rather than making the usual fuss, making political hay out of the issue, seems to me that our politicians need to quit the battling and work together to pull our countries out of the mess that we're in. Young- I LOVE that photo! I just saved it to my file :) I can't believe I just responded to your other post (got busy for over three hours with work) and said all the same things LWO said! Too funny. The chandelier is beautiful and the light above the sink is so pretty! I can't wait to see it all come together...you have such wonderful taste. I can see why you're excited about the laundry room. What a great space! The dining room looks like it will be so elegant and functional, but I see what you mean about needing lots of light, from the kitchen. Of course, you'll have light from the living room, too. Maybe add some extra lighting on a dimmer switch, so you can have mood lighting for dining, but lots of light for reading, etc. The 'walk in' library is such a good idea! You know, looking at your picture, is there anyway to install windows (almost like a transom) between the dining room and the laundry room. Almost like putting glass in between those studs, above the doorway? If you have windows in the laundry room, it would bring in some light, without your guests seeing the laundry room, while they're dining. Just an idea :)

Congratulations !! You are the FIRST KIA wedding !! It looks so perfectly set up and sounds like you had a fabulous time. What a brilliant idea to have the crepe makers. We love to go to the one in the University district in NOLA. Yummy and an efficient way to feed everyone. c

Congratulations! How very exciting, looks and sounds like it went well. Those crepes look YUM! And it was nice to see that beautiful Blue Bahia peeking through all the yummy plates.

The canine family members are very dashing in their little bow/bowties :)

All the best to you and your new DH. You survived this building project together, fraught with frustrations and difficulties. That bodes well for your future together!

CEFreeman, DH had a blue tie and his suit is kind of blue, LOL.

nan53, the furbabies were definitely part of everything. DH's brother married us and when we said "I do" the dogs both started barking like crazy- it was strange, don't know how they knew, but I guess it meant they were happy, LOL.

cat_mom, it was actually a wedding dinner, not breakfast.

trailrunner, the crepes were definitely the highlight of the wedding. We go to the crepe place here probably once a week at least and we knew from the very beginning we wanted them to cater the wedding. It was great, they made 3 different kinds of savory crepes and a bunch of desert crepes and everyone was sharing so they got to try everything (the crepes were too big for people to eat one of each, LOL)

Thanks breezygirl. I think the furkids would like a wedding every weekend for the food alone!

Thanks mmhmmgood. I'm glad we waited until the house was done to do the wedding, we started building it even before we got engaged officially but as soon as we did get engaged I told DH that we needed to get married here.

LOL aliris19, I do love sapphires. I'll let DH know now to plan on some sapphire anniversary jewels! He'll be thrilled to hear it.

remodelfla, I was amazed at how well the house really did support having so many people over. Everyone had room to sit and eat somewhere, there were people in the dining room, great room and gathering room but most everyone spent a lot of their time in the kitchen!

Ginny20, the crepes were delicious! I didn't get to eat any of the cheese or the tea sandwiches we had out because I was too busy trying to talk to everyone but I did make time to eat three crepes!

Congratulations Beagles! Your kitchen is my all time favorite favorite!!! I'm so happy for you and I love your fur babies dressed appropriately in wedding attire. We dressed the puppy-doos appropriately for my daughter's wedding in 2006 too :)

Thanks so much for including us in the fun.. I know I for one have been looking forward to the event. Love seeing the puppies and especially the ring shot. You have a fabulous home, and might I say --after seeing the ring shot, such young hands :) and as Christine would say, --raised eyebrows here-- we are all looking forward to more 'puppy' pictures! LOL oldbat2be, I am 29 and my DH is 34, so I like to think of us as young (although I tell DH all the time that he is very old and I'm his young trophy wife, LOL)
