Kitchens in Action - the Puppy Edition

AKA the hazards of a floor-level warming drawer with floor-level puppies around.

Good thing my kids are reasonably well-trained.

Please excuse the floor. As you may or may not recall, we're kind of stuck on that until Hubby figures out how he wants to finish it. So it's a disaster...

Too cute! My dogs must think that when the floor level warming drawer is open, it is for them! They will stay away on command, but I don't trust those innocent eyes for a second.

This was really touching but something didnt look quite right at the beginning. If you freeze the frame at the first few seconds the water is calm between puppy & edge of pool behind him. If you can Pause & freeze the frame almost the second the video starts, it's clear pup's hind end is dropping down in the water with a simultaneous splash of water coming up from puppy and then ripples. (Just like when mom jumps in but on a much smaller scale due to pup's lesser weight). I tried to view it as maybe he fell in near mom or started from the far left shallow end and changed course to his left, but his hind end drop & water movement doesn't fit. If you can freeze those very first few seconds, tapping pause repeatedly & quickly so it starts & stops, it's a clearer picture. I shudder to think the pup was tossed in by human hands but that's sure how it appears in freeze frames. Too far a distance for a little one like him to leap out to the center of the pool. And mom looks like she's bracing for her point to jump in, right behind her pup. I've known a lot of retriever breeds that are water obsessed, but never owned one. Maybe it was a training excercise (long shot but trying to give humans the benefit of the doubt here, otherwise it's upsetting). As far as mama's rescue & getting her little one far out of the way of perceived danger, yes, that part was truly heartwarming and amazing.

skatiero, I am so excited by your post! Most definitely you may use the picture!! I looked at your website a while back when you posted it and was so impressed, both by your work and at how great you look. You had been saying you thought you didn't look well and I can't remember whether or not I posted to you at the time, but I'll tell you now that I thought you looked great. And I am always in awe of those who can channel their creativity into such fabulous works as yours. I'm very sorry about your Maltese. It is so hard to lose a pet - you do have to go through a mourning period, I think. We lost our dog, who was 16, last summer and didn't really feel ready for another until now. I married my dh when Luke (the dog) was 9 years old, so this is my first experience with a puppy. What do you think about this new name? DH even agreed to it. Our 5-year-old suddenly came up with the name Cricket, and we really think it fits. I think we could still use Shortcake as an endearment, too. Believe it or not, it even ties into the girls' desire for a Disney princess name, as Cricket is one of Mulan's companions and is supposed to bring her luck :) Cricket/Shortcake now knows how to sit, lie down, and roll over, though that one requires a treat in the hand for prompting. We're still not quite there on housebreaking and I'm not sure what I might be doing wrong (if anything). She doesn't go in her crate, she does go outside when I take her, she tells me sometimes when she needs to go out but she sometimes goes again inside or she will pee outside and then poop inside. Luckily, the floor is hardwood, but I always said I'd never had a pet that pooped in the house. Hopefully, it's a temporary training situation.

Dogs are attracted to feces because there is undigested food in it. If you want to train your dog not to put anything in its mouth from the ground then you need to be vigilant. You have a couple of choices, you can use either a very small dab of toothpaste (most dogs dont like minty flavored things, beagles are notorious for eating anything and everything) or you can use a small jar of tobasco sauce, the minute your other dog does its duty, or you catch your dog going towards the deposit, try and corrrect its behavior by putting her into a sit stay position. This is positive reward training, but it wont stop your dog from trying to eat something it shouldnt - this is where things get important. I witnessed our neighbors dog eat something on the ground which turned out to be poisoned. The dog was rushed to the vet and eventually was saved. I taught my dog with toothpaste, I reprimanded him for eating something off the ground by first saying DROP it, giving him a opportunity to obey the command, then following up with a dab of toothpaste - it does not have to be a big dab, just enough to get them to associate the bad taste and the reprimand with the action of picking up something they shouldnt be doing. Now I have had people get on me saying toothpaste is bad for you to swallow, granted, but 4 dabs of toothpaste is not going to be nearly as detrimental as being posioned or getting sick. The sell very small travel sized tobasco sauce bottles if the toothpaste does not appeal to you ro your dog decides it likes it. It took my dog four attempts and he never picked up anything after that. Beagles are going to take more time. As far as the water goes, go get yourself a travel non spill bowl, It is plastic, has a lid with a little hole in the center of the lid, where the dog will drink from, this may sow her down enough that she does not regurgitate her water, good luck

I really don't have any complaints about his behavior. Since the puppy came along, his behaviour has actually even improved. I can (and have) left an open jar of peanut butter out and left the kitchen trashcan door open and he doesn't mess with either. I think these examples of all things demonstates who's calling the shots here. It wasn't always this way. As for dominance w/ the puppy, the only time he clearly tries to make a point is when they're walking up the stairs. The puppy will frequently interrupt his meals to go sample some kibble from the older dogs bowl and the older dog lets him do it. This puppy gets away with a lot of crazy stuff when they're playing. Sharing toys, even stuffed kongs. I keep waiting for this to come to an abrupt end but they continue to get along really well.

Of course he did (as well as his two sisters). But not until we were done eating. Unless it's something I know will make them sick, they almost always get at least a little taste of what we have.

Too funny! My english bulldog sits next to the warming drawer with nose pressed to the vent. You have to slide her away when you need to open it and trust me, she is like moving a cement block.

My older dauchsie halfway climbs into the DW when I'm loading it to "help clean" any food particles. I can guarantee you he would have made a beeline for the bacon and ran for his life with the bacon hanging out of his mouth given the chance! He throws his head back and tries to woof it down whenever he tries to steal away with some people food.

when dh and i were first married i put out a plate of spaghetti and meatballs for him. he went to the bathroom to wash out and when he returned the meatballs (three, very LARGE meatballs) were GONE.

we found the cat licking her chops trying to clean the tomato sauce from her furry face. of course she's partial to bacon as well. she is now 16 years old and realllllllly FAT. cute doggy!

My kids are actually pretty good. For the most part they know what the boundaries are. Of course, there's no way I'd leave that drawer open unattended - that would be just too much temptation.

Thanks everyone for sharing your own pet follies. Pets are such special creatures and I truly appreciate the joy they bring to my life.
