why are all these leaves growing so small?
Comments (60)> I read they do not like direct light, but rather need bright, indirect. My understanding was that even the strongest fluorescent T5 light you can give plants equals to this "bright indirect" light level from plant culture descriptions - because real sun is SO MUCH brighter. I was at an orchid show a couple of weeks ago at New York Botanical Garden, and they had a lot of companion plants including many species of Maranta and Calathea growing on the floor of the greenhouses. I should totally have measured the light there with my phone (unlike orchids, these did not seem to be temporary exhibit, so it would have been meaningful), but I did not think to do it. Maranta growing in the ground is quite a sight to see, by the way. It's a very low ground cover - its habit is to try to grow roots into the soil at every node, so it does not reach up at all, except for its tiny little purple (or white) flowers. Very cute. I am thinking how to replicate this look at home. When it was growing on my window sill a winter ago, a long vine crept along the window sill - and it did flower at that time as well. I cut it up at that time to fill out the pot, but I am starting to think just letting it crawl where it wanted to go was a better idea. It does not seem to want to grow upright at all. > can you take a light measument? I did, finally. On my light stand, it was getting around 200-700 fc (it was on the less bright shelf not directly under lights). On the bathroom counter, I get 15-20 fc. This is with an uncalibrated phone light meter app, so absolute levels may be wrong, but comparatively, they do tell a story, I think. The plant stand was getting 16 hours a day on a timer at the time, and the bathroom day is roughly as long (manual turn on/off), maybe a bit shorter....See MoreWhy is granite pricing so mysterious?
Comments (15)Hi......let me see if I can help you with this as I am a granite fabricator. 1.) Granite wholesalers don't sell granite to the public, and fabricators aren't wholesalers. Not to mention one slab weighs as much as the average vehicle, can't rest it against your house. 2.) Wholesalers aren't being secretive. When you ask a painting contractor to paint your house, you're not paying per gallon of paint right? And when you go shopping at say, Macy's, you don't ask the salesperson what Levi's is charging them. The price per square foot should not be your concern. The bottom line or total price should be. 3.) Anyone who told me $40/SF, I would not walk away.....I would run. Workmanship is what you should be looking for, and are they insured, do they do their own work or sub it out. Something to think about....See MoreWhy are my green frogs so yellow this year?
Comments (2)Don't know really. A few years back I noticed Green Tree Frogs at my place were becoming more brown rather than green. I tried to find out why but ran into a 'blank wall'. Haven't seen them brown the last couple of years and there doesn't seem to have been any detrimental effect to the population. Haven't noticed changes in other species, other than the ones that are highly variable anyway. Most frogs seem to be able to adjust their colours to suit their surroundings to some extent, maybe that's what they've been doing....See MoreWhy is Off White so hard?
Comments (4)Just take your counter sample with you to the paint store and pick out a half dozen chips. You'll probably want to bring the choices back home to look at them with the other finishes in your lighting. It's hard to suggest a paint based on photos on a computer monitor... Note that, if the off-whites are getting you down, you could probably find a neutral from the grays in the inclusions in your counter or a lighter shade that matches your accent tile/backsplash (which I love, by the way) or cabinets in tone. As long as it's lighter than the cabinets when side by side, it will be contrast enough....See Moreazstoneconsulting
