Is this bad granite installation

Just had granite done in kitchen past week. New construction.

We have an angular bar with sink in center. Kindof u-shaped but angles wider. The overhang varies approx an inch on both sides (left and right)in a 4 ft span. In the center section where sink is it is the same. So if I put my finger under countertop touching cabinet frame the end hits my cuticle. Go down 4 ft and it hits my knuckle. The cabinet guy said our cabinets will stick out on the shorter end. We have full overlay if that matters. The granite guy said it was because our cabinets are off. I thought that was the purpose of template and he said no.

Also they installed our new faucet and got glue on it. When they took off glue it took off finish. It is brushed stainless and areas went to more shiny finish. They will not admit fault to anything. Do I have right to say something about overhang varience or take off bill for faucet? It was $300. We have paid all but $600 and they are threatining to get attorney because our contract stated pay 1/2 down before and other 1/2 when granite done.

Is this how it works or do I have to just deal with it.

The granite guy said it was because our cabinets are off. I thought that was the purpose of template and he said no

Horsehockey. If that were the case, you wouldn't need templates-- only dimensions. He screwed up, and he knows it.

The hot tamale train!!???!! That rocks Mrsandrews!!!!! Thank you. Which granite did you end up with?? I know, I know. I need to calm myself down before I freak out again. I mean, soon the appliances are going in, then window treatments. I can't post another "oh no, this is too XXX" everytime I frickin put something new in my kitchen!!! Thanks neesie! I didn't realize I was being too sensitive. To me, from a technical perspective, it just doesn't match up. I've seen some kick a$$ seams on GW where they match perfectly, and we had two big slabs for them to choose from, so I was just expecting that they could do a better job. But maybe my expectations are too high. And no, my mother-in-law has told me before, for goodness sakes, don't point out the flaws!! Thanks Patricia!!

Yes, they have already taken the piece back and will reshape the whole thing. There are no seams in this piece. They had actually done a new template and said it would be no problem to position the sink with a 4" set back, but then they twice got in slabs that don't match the rest of the counter. So they've now given the options of having the slabs not match or cutting the existing sink piece to try to get the sink closer (although it still wouldn't be as close as it could be). I'm prepared to push for more options, but I want to know everything wrong with this plan before we talk to them again.

Germain, Can you send me a message offline? I will send you pictures of my windows. Mine are custom wood Windows but that will give you an idea of the seals. They are not installed yet. Looking at those pictures, I see a combination of installation issues and a hack by someone. It looks like the IGU was broken and replaced. I have never seen the black plastic gasket installed like that. The third picture looks like a stationary panel and a tilt turn window but it looks wrong. The windows are installed way too close to the wall. I have seen multiple installation of European Windows and none of them look like this.

"@Najeebah, you're right, most people do work 9-5..However, I don't...I'm in the airline buisness and the granite was installed without my knowledge while I was on a trip and didn't have the luxury to communicate via laptop or cell while traveling at 40k feet...... Please re-read this: "This is not addressed to the op, who it seems was uninformed regarding being present. This is in reply to the quoted comment, in general." I posted to get "professional" opinion's and I really appreciate the one's that gave their professional and respectful opinions. Houzz is a site with pros and non-pros. ...and he owes you for the faucet. Just tell him that if he wants to involve attys, then he will have to cover your atty's fee and court expenses when he loses. See how fast he is to sue then....

Many people get away with being bullies because consumers back down often enough to make it worth trying. Show no fear and explain that he needs to re-do the granite and replace the faucet. Period. If he loses money on your job it is his fault.

I have no advice, but wanted to offer sympathy for you and give you some virtual courage to stand your ground.

I've been dealing with a bully-ish fabricator as well, and the kind people here have been so helpful in giving me the confidence to stick up for myself.

Thanks for the advise. I am not one who likes confrontation so I usually let things slide but from the replies it seems like I do have a right and I am going to exercise it. It is a shame to hear this goes on more than you think.

I advise folks on situations like this every week.

Your Fabricator is in the wrong. If he accepts cabinets that are crap, so shall his work be - crap. It's the garbage in/garbage out concept.

As a "professional" - your fabricator has an obligation to point out to you - BEFORE he does the work - that cabinets are ca-ca or what ever - so YOU can make a decision as to fixing the cabinets - or accepting them as is. That disecison was yours to make, and he made it for you.

DO NOT PAY THE FINAL INVOICE UNTIL YOU ARE SATISFIED WITH THE WORK.

As a professional, I agree with the other professionals. overhang should be equal and consistent.

don't pay, let him threaten you all he wants.

TAKE PICTURES!!!!! of everything.

I just have to say this forum is fantastic. It's wonderful that all the above people are there to help along the way. In my opinion that is what life is all about. Even though I didn't post it is just wonderful to see.

As I have written elsewhere, we're seeing a rash of poor counter installations lately. You are getting good advice here.

I don't understand why your counter person installed a faucet. Sure, they drill the hole(s), but normally the faucet is installed by a plumber. Also, I do not understand why any glue was in the vicinity of a faucet installation.

As for the attorney threat, I wouldn't over worry it. I don't know where you are, but in most places he's have to give an attorney a couple of thousand $$ to even listen to him on a contract matter. Of course, if he has one on retainer (not likely) he probably has to sue a lot, or gets sued a lot!
