It's from Plow & Hearth - I just looked at online, & discovered they now carry "biobags" - compostable insert bags. I'm ordering a batch - will make cleaning out the bin much easier!

Cleaning out a stinky pot doesn't sound like a lot of fun.

I'd also like to see the one I saw in a prior post, an urn style I believe. It was made by an artisan.

I've been using a stainless steel bucket from Lee Valley for several years now, and I don't mind keeping it on my countertop. I don't see the point of insert bags - just one more thing to buy so you can throw it out. My bucket is so easy to clean out between loads. I've been composting for over 25 yrs now, even during the intervals when I didn't have a garden. I'm still sorting these kitchen wastes even now when I'm camping in my basement during a kitchen redo. Sure cuts down on the volume and weight of household waste destined for the landfill.

cooksnsews - I've been composting since childhood as well :). (that would be *koffkoff* more than 25 years) And thank you for bringing up the issue of 'buying something to throw out'. I haven't ordered the biobags, & now I know what was holding me back from doing it right away.

I use a cat food bucket & keep it under the sink cuz the compost bucket gets nasty.

We use the stainless steel compost container that they sell at Plow and Hearth (vertical sides and charcoal filter in lid.) I'll admit, after 20+ years of composting we just bought our first biobags (biobag #2 is in the container now.) DH is in charge of the compost and he has no qualms about leaving a really grungy bin on our counter. I try to avoid disposable products as much as possible but this is a needed change.

I started one of the threads -- try searching for "compost crock" or "compost jar." Mine is a non-artisan plain white jar, with a lid and carbon filters in the lid, from BB&B, cost $30. I line it with a recycleable plastic bag.

I've been using this metal compost pail for 5-6 years. I see them in the Williams-Sonoma and Gaiam catalogs, and that is how I buy my filters. I keep the pail next to the sink, in my prep zone. I don't use a liner bag, but I toss in the paper towel I use to dry it after emptying and rinsing. That provides a sort of liner for the bottom.

Not artisan, but I use an attractive, rounded-side stainless steel stock pot. I've been using it for over 15 years, and it still looks nice. It is similar to the one in the link, but 15 years ago it had a stainless cover, not glass. No filters or bags needed, and it goes right into the dishwasher if it needs a good cleaning. I leave it right on my counter where I do food prep. A friend of mine uses an antique enameled stock pot.

Jill, was it David T. Smith? He did those fabulous ceramic paper towel holders . . . but apparently isn't doing them any more -- at least they're no longer on his website. Not sure if he did compost crocks or not.

Some time ago I did a search for compost crocks and came up with that ubiquitous white ceramic one everywhere, plus others in copper, stainless, red or blue ceramic, green and brown ceramic, and a bright red one shaped like an apple. If you want any links, let me know . . . I think I kept a whole section of them in my favorites file.

I've always just used a plastic pail but the charcoal filter thing sounds like a good idea!

I checked out the David T. Smith site with no luck, but nice pottery.

After a long internet search this morning, I found a real contender on Esty. $53.00 + shipping. A bit expensive, but this will sit on my island front and center. It's gold, browns and red with a maple leaf. If the artisan emails back that it's dishwasher safe, it's coming to my house.

boysrus2, I was curious and love Etsy so I checked out your compost crock. It says in the description that it is dishwasher safe. I guess you've found your crock! It really is beautiful, almost looks like there's a real leaf sitting on the lid!

I'm using an ice-cream bucket (a little plastic one) with a lid. The lid seals up well, and it didn't cost anything!

roeland, you're funny! I'd use any container if this jar wasn't going to sit out on my island where I do my prep. Sounds silly, right? After all, it is a jar for "rotting" food. I'm just too lazy to put it under the sink after every meal, so it's got to be pretty.

So, the maple leaf compost jar I like at Etsy has a purple-ish area on top, not dark red. I would have known this if I'd read the description before getting excited. Purple will clash with the garnet spots in my granite.

However, the artisan said we could discuss a different glaze combo that would work for me. Thought I'd mention this if anyone else is looking as well and wants something a little different.

When I was a young'un, my Mother put the compost in a milk carton. On the counter.

Magazine cover kitchen we did not have, but we had one great garden!

Okay, Jill, you've just cost me an hour of time! Esty is new to me and I've been there looking . . . and looking . . . and looking. . .

BTW, I love the compost crock! And am glad to know about Esty . . .
