Stools - backless or not?
Comments (21)I'm not clear on the height you're considering. Are you considering bar height or counter height stools? If they're counter height I would consider backless, but for 30" bar stools, I would recommend something with a back if you'll have little ones climbing up and sitting in them. Our kitchen island counter is the hub of our home and I think guests really appreciate having back support while sitting to visit. We have backless saddle stools for our family room bar and most people end up sitting facing out and leaning their backs against the bar if they're watching TV or sitting for awhile. A lot depends on your floor plan (do you need to be able to tuck them under for traffic flow, etc.) and how they'll be used (a quick breafast, or a leisurely brunch..)...See MoreAngled island with 12 inch overhang - need opinions please :)
Comments (11)Many people on this forum have noted that marbles etches at the blink of an eye. We don't have experience with that yet, because we're only just beginning to move back into our new kitchen and we're still using our temp kitchen for food prep. My marble island is two levels: The prep (lower) level is taken up by a prep sink and giant butcherblock cutting board, so the remaining marble surface is likely only to be affected by water. The eating (counter height) level is where we plan to be "careful", using placemats and runners under plates and platters--that is, until the first etching starts (boo-hoo), and then we'll see how careful we'll be after that!...See More'Half-wall' under overhang on island
Comments (5)Jess, I'm not sure if this is what you mean but my island is two north-south cabs, one facing east and the other west. At the south end with the overhang, I have a decorative beadboard piece. I don't think I've ever seen the area under an overhang remain unfinished, nor is it a good place for cabinet fronts, so I think you always end up with a half-wall, either finished with cabinet wood or possibly drywall. Here's a pic, fwiw:...See MoreBack or Backless Bar Stools
Comments (23)It depends on how much they will be used. I went with backless because our table is fairly close to the island so the backs of the chairs and then the barstools with backs would have been too much, IMO. These backless stools push right in and don't compete with the chairs. The kids sit in them from time to time, and every once in a while an adult might sit for a short time while someone else is working in the kitchen. Once I'm finished up in the kitchen, I'm ready to go sit at the table or in the family room so I don't see the need for anyone to get too comfy on the stools....See Morejaymielo
