Backless bar stools
Comments (5)We have backless stools, because space is an issue, and we need to be able to push them all the way under the counter. I don't sit in them for huge amounts of time, but I have never found them particularly uncomfortable. I mostly lean forward on the counter anyway. And my kids sit at them a lot, and they don't seem to mind....See MoreBar stools - saddle seat v. seat with back
Comments (10)I have the Pottery Barn Tibetan stools in a black (with some "distressed edges"). Love them for our counter-height area because they slide under when they're not in use--and we have a huge dining room table, so no one (other than the kids) eats there much....more for brousing through a cookbook or going through the mail. They're comfortable for us and we use them on a daily basis for short periods of time. But bar height, I would DEFINITELY get some type of back. I have seen some (as the pp mentioned) that are pretty short in the back so as not to obstruct the view or be too obtrusive. Maybe that would be an option. :) Sarah...See MoreFEEDBACK: Bar Stools - Backs? No Backs?
Comments (15)In our last house, we had backs on the barstools. We liked them, and used them for each meal (just hubby and me). This was for the raised counter at the back of the sink peninsula that separated the kitchen from the breakfast table area. When I staged the house to sell it, I removed them (mainly because our breakfast table was larger than normal and I didn't want it to look quite so cramped). I liked the cleaner look without the barstool backs sticking up in my field of view when looking through the kitchen to the breakfast room and beyond to the lovely view out the french doors. So....in our new house, I choose backless stools--the "saddle" type ones that slide up well under the island and don't clutter up the kitchen. I seem to sit there as long after the meal as I did in the other stools at the other house, so they're comfortable enough. If I wanted a really comfortable dining experience, I could always use the table....See MoreBackless stools - dorky with my island?
Comments (6)We just got backless stools, even though DH was very attached (at first) to having stools with backs. Some additional considerations/positives about the backless stools are: If they have a 360 degree swivel, the backless won't hang up on the counter overhang, but stools with backs probably will. The line of round stool tops (we have red leather that look a lot like the one you show) is graphically very appealing. All in a row, they look much more visually interesting then stools with backs, which look more like stools and less like cool shapes, iykwim. In another thread, boxerpups had posted a whole slew of islands with seating near dining tables. I found that I liked the visual MUCH more when the counter seating and the dining seating were distinctly different from each other. Our dining chairs have tall backs, so the backless round stools made a great contrast. We're quite happy with the comfort and looks of our backless stools. In our kitchen, they are definitely for perching, not for sitting for a long time. I might feel differently if these were primary seating, however....See Morenatal
