Refrigerators - Internal vs. external water dispenser?
Comments (15)Kerry- We had the same dilemna a little over a year ago when we were remodeling out kitchen. I did not want the external dispenser on my fridge and I was concerned about the internal dispenser because of dripping and I felt the fridge door would always be open because there are seven of us in the house and we all drink a lot of water. This is what we decided on and I couldn't be happier: Fridge: LG LFC21760ST FD CD with no water, which made it much cheaper than the other models we were considering that had the internal dispenser. I also liked the look, the handles went well with my other appliances which are Bosch. Everpure Polara water chiller I too was concerned about space under the sink and the noise of the chiller. I e-mailed Everpure about the possibility of installing the unit in the basement to allow more room under the sink. The reply I received said the best way to install the unit is as close to the faucet as possible. The farther away the system is, the more water will have to be flushed out of the lines before you get cold water. Also, the farther away the unit is, the lower the pressure is coming out of your faucet. As for the noise with the chiller under the sink, it does cycle on and off and it is fairly loud when it is doing its thing, but it really doesn't bother me, I don't even notice it anymore. inSinkerator TranScape HC-View-SS (insta-hot!) Add me to the enabler list but if you are getting the chiller and you have to get a faucet for that anyways, you have to get an insta-hot!!! It was a last minute decision for me and it is one of my favorite things in our new kitchen. I drink tea every morning and a couple of my kids eat instant oatmeal every morning. I also find it very handy for cleaning. I wet a microfiber towel with the hot water and wipe down my granite and appliances. I bought the inSinkerator because the dispenser coordinated well with my main faucet and it came with the hot water tank. At the time, I did not care for any of the Everpure faucets but I think they have introduced some new ones since then. I only had to put two holes in my granite, one for my faucet and one for my hot/cold water dispenser. I decided not to get the soap dispenser hole. It is a little crowded under my sink but there is still room for a garbage can, a few of my cleaning supplies, box of trash bags from Sam's, large container of Electrasol tabs from Sam's, etc. It is very efficient, I don't have a lot of things under the sink anymore but everything I need is there. Oh, and as far as energy efficiency, our electric bill is a lot lower than it was year ago even with the extra under sink gadgets. My new appliances are just more energy efficient than my 14 yr. old appliances were. We were recently informed that our town library has an electicity usage monitor that we can check out to see how much energy our appliances are using. I am really curious about the hot water and chiller and plan to check that out real soon. Good luck with your decisions! Ann...See MoreStone Information and Advice (& Checklists)
Comments (102)Update to the 6 & 10 Rule: It only applies when the 1/3 - 2/3 Rule of Cantilevering applies (1' can cantilever over 2' of cabinets). If your slab is 2 cm, you can have up to a 6" overhang without support. If your slab is 3 cm you can have up to a 10" overhang without support . If you are using a pony wall or cabinets with a depth of less than 2 times the depth of the overhang, then you need to provide support to equal at least 2/3 of the total depth of the countertop. . Comments (20)"After 24 hours of agonizing over this decision, I have posted this message in an attempts to gain some outside opinions....." Dan - Please don't take this the wrong way, OK? - but I wish I had your problems!!!! HA! OK - Seriously, again, I'm NOT trying to "make light" of your situation - I KNOW that this is a big deal to you, and I respect that.... I'm Just tryin to put things into perspective.. it's a soap dispenser... BUT - It's YOUR soap dispenser in YOUR kitchen, so even though I am trying not to sound like a wise-acre, I really do have empathy for your situation. Extra "holes" are a pet peave scenario of mine, because they can be (100 percent of the time) be avoided. I get called or e-mailed at least once a week from folks all over North America, asking me to advise them on the same thing that you are dealing with, and so, this is not a new thing, it's probably NOT your fault, but you are faced with having to deal with the "It is what it is" situation now - one more hole than you maybe originally - had not planned on. Based on your picture that you posted, I have to agree with the sage advice of Ccoombs1 - IMHO as well - Switch the Faucet to "center" and put the SD on the side... Will that work - clearance wise? Nuccia - I have to very respectfully disagree with you 100% - Granite yards do not "just have stuff that they can just pull out of thin air" "Get a new countertop"? Again - IMHO - this is not fair to the Fabricator at all. Here's the question that begs to be asked over all others: Was it really a "mistake" in the first place???? Bear with me on this - ok? Dan - did YOU bring up the locations of the faucet & any other accessory holes? If you did, when was it done? Was there a form that was filled out and documented, so that YOU, AND your Fabricator were BOTH dialed in as to what you wanted, where you wanted it, and so on? Or, Was your Fabricator "pro-active" and did HE bring this item up first? Did you have an idea as to where you wanted any holes drilled? Did your Fabricator ask you for guidance and not get any from you? (that is still no reason just to arbitrarily drill holes any old place a fabricator feels like it..) Some Fabricators have a set pattern that is used in the number and location of any holes to be drilled - some don't. I use a series of check lists and "CYA" forms to insure that something exactly like what has just happened to you and caused you 24 hours of agony - dosen't happen to my clients.... IF your Fabricator "just decided for you" and drilled the holes "willie nillie" - then he only has himself to blame - and he can chalk this up to it being a "rookie" mistake, and he needs to rectify the situation. Here's an example of what I am talking about - Had a form like this one been used correctly on your project, you'd be posting pics of your kitchen that you are thrilled with - rather that looking for advice on how to address what is now - a problem: In my opinion, this all starts with 2 way communication - between you AND your Fabricator - and it should have started on the day that you agreed to have them do your project - not now, when "the cow's are out of the pasture and up on the highway"...... Again - Based on your picture that you posted - Can You Switch the Faucet and put the SD on the side... Will that work - clearance wise? This may be the most equitable resolution to the situation.... Thanks for letting me put in my .02 cents worth - and Dan & Nuccia - No Offense meant - not trying to ruffle your feathers or anything - OK? It's just that this could have totally been prevented. Hopefully, other folks checking out this thread will glean a tip from this, and save themselves 24 hours of agony too!!! If anybody wants to use the form, it's free, and in various configurations for lav tops, wet bar sinks, different types of kitchen undermounts, etc. I share it with everyone in the spirit of preventing stuff like this from happening in the future - or at least, reducing the frequency.... Go to my website - there's an e-mail link there to click on and you or your Fabricator can get in contact with me for the form - free of charge Hope this will help solve your problem.... kevin Kevin M. Comments (28)Love the pros and cons and the vote to do what works for me, as well as advice on what has worked for YOU! All important considerations. I had read in older threads that some experienced enough aggravation with Never MT that they did not recommend them. I've never had one and never experienced any aggravation with filling a dispenser from the top, so I am not considering Never MT this time either. Something just jogged my memory, though, about how the dish soap dispenser isn't helpful if it cannot be mounted closely enough that the soap dispenses INTO the sink rather than onto the counter or onto the side of the sink. So, I might make my decision after the counter fabricators tell me how close they can mount the dispenser to the sink....See MoreUser
