A silly question about buying e-books on Amazon
Comments (10)That is how I have my DS Kindle set up - I didn't want it tied to my account, so I just bought him an Amazon card (they actually have Kindle ones, but any Amazon card works). I bought a $25 one from the grocery store - no fees. Check with your local library too! I can "check out" books from my local library, down load them via Amazon for free. I get to keep them on the Kindle for 2 or 3 weeks and they they take them off. In Iowa it is called WILBOR - and it works GREAT!!! I use my library card number to check them out, but I do it from my home computer....See MoreFaucets from Big Box stores truly Lower quality?
Comments (118)@jwillhouse - Your plumber has a vested interest in convincing you to buy things with a markup. I can assure you that the same part numbers are the same no matter where the faucet is ordered from. As for your contract with your plumber, is it a time and materials contract or cost plus contract? Your post notes that your plumber lists retail, wholesale, and a 15% markup. If it is a time and materials contract and the 15% is the mark up from wholesale to retail, then it is on the low end of markups. If it is a cost plus contract then the markup is on his actual cost less any rebates, so the 15% should get added to what he actually paid not the listed wholesale price. In a cost plus contract, the 15% is likely unavoidable as it is still a cost even if you buy it somewhere else. Many contractors in a time and materials contract don't allow you to supply your own items. --- While it is absolutely true that you can benefit from sourcing products cheaper from sources other than you plumber, we should recognize that to some extent it is a zero sum game. Most plumbers are not getting rich off a single family home, they are just finding alternative ways to present the profit they need to make. So while adding profit to a faucet may seem like a ripoff, if all the faucets were bid at cost the plumber would likely just charge more for the installation and you would be in the same position. It can still be an advantage to you to get your faucet at a cheaper price if your plumber allows, but don't fall into the trap of thinking you are getting ripped off just because the plumber adds profit there instead of somewhere else....See Morebuying a gas oven from Amazon?
Comments (7)I wouldn't be particularly concerned about buying from Amazon directly. They tend to be pretty good with their customer service ... at least for the first few months after ordering; and sometimes for longer. Also, depends on how much you buy from them over the course over the year. I'd still check though, whether the manufacturer considers Amazon an "authorized dealer". It's silly to give up on the manufacturer's warranty, as the manufacturer is in the best position to deal with any problems. Third-party warranty is a lot less useful (although still better than nothing). I would be a lot more concerned about third-party vendors on Amazon. They come and go all the time. Who knows, whether you'll be able to find the same third-party vendor, when you need their help with a warranty repair. It's not unusual for a third-party vendor to only be on Amazon for a couple of months. At least with somebody like AJ Madison, you know that they have been around for a long time and presumably will stay around. Also, they are authorized dealers for many of the major brands. Having said that, I don't have any first-hand experience with AJ Madison; so, I can only recommend them based on what I have read online....See MoreIt Blows Me Away What You Can Buy on Amazon
Comments (55)Gardengal: I'll admit my words included a bit of exaggeration, but monopoly is as monopoly does. Is Amazon there yet: do they want to crush their competitors (bad), or just keep doing better than the competition (good)? So far personally I think they are mostly on the "good" side, but things change so I'm not guaranteeing my support forever. Angela & others: A company can outsource execution of something (a component of a product, or delivery to customer's door) but that doesn't absolve them of responsibility for keeping their word. When I one-click, I expect the product to show up as Amazon promised -- correct product, good shape, on time. If it doesn't, I'm mad. What I like about Amazon is they DO take responsibility by offering refunds, etc if something went wrong in the delivery chain, all the way to me. I'm aware of efforts they are trying to deal with porch pirates -- lock boxes, that weird service where they get to enter your home -- but personally I haven't needed that yet. So overall I'm still a fan. Ten, 20 years from now? Who knows....See Morejscout
