I just bought a small white one with 2 steps at Bed Bath and Beyond that is so minimal that it fits into my vertical storage cupboard along with the trays and broiler pan. I will be using this to access the upper shelves of my cupboards and for washing windows, dusting ceiling, etc.

If you have a larger storage area, I recommend the ones with a high back that you can hold when you ascend/descend. As a clumsy person, I like these very much. I came home with a 3 step one during our drywall phase and DH appropriated it and turned it into a work tool. He used it for holding up a plank walk, working on ceiling, etc. We used it yesterday to install pendant lights. It's unsightly now, but will be a part of his work kit in the future years. I got it at Menards for about $35 but there are a lot of these products there, I think even at Target.

Unlike my previous stools, these both have a lock button on them which takes a little getting used to, but you're less likely to pinch your fingers.

I second that opinion on one with a high back. The 2 step type with no back causes me to lose my balance when reaching up high. I got a cheap one at Menards, too, and it hangs on the pantry wall. Florantha, my DH also confiscated my larger one with the high back, and it now resides in the garage.

I have something like this that I love. I don't like unstable step stools and mine is very secure feeling with the handle to hold on to. It folds up pretty narrow.

I understand what people are saying about having a step stool with a handle-back. However, our primary goal for our small kitchen was a step stool that would store in a small space. We found a wonderful one that actually is small enough to store under our sink. No back handle, but it is very stable, holds up to 225 lbs., and adds 17" to our height. I also like its cushioned-rubber pads on the steps which keep your feet from any slipping (versus the smooth steps of other step stools I saw). The price was right to boot. It's the Polder 2-step mini step stool.

One thing you want to avoid is a step stool that doesn't add enough to your height to be useful. We looked at some step stools that only added 12" or so, which would not have been enough for me to reach the top shelf of our 39" tall cabinets (which go up to our 8' ceiling). How tall are your cabinets? If we had 9' ceilings and even taller cabinets, we would have had to find a taller step stool.

I bought one of these 3 step Skinny Minis at Target for our kitchen and then they stopped carrying it. I found another one at the website below for out master closet. The 3 step is great for 9-10 foot ceilings. At the current sale price, you can't beat it. In fact, I'm questioning whether I need another for anything.
