F&P has a terrible repair record anyway for fridges -- I'd say pass on this.

ohhhh..really? Makes me sad. I honestly have not done my research. I keep meaning to, and I will eventually, but I saw the *name* and I saw the *price* plus we just got an awesome F&P double oven for a steal of a price and thought it would be cool to match.

BTW, I was thinking of making a simple SS sleek frame and framing a piece of chalk board to adhere to the top right of the fridge, right over the dent. Oh well.

But if you're okay with something practical like a bulletin board/chalk board/magnetic board (my preference), why the heck not? I don't think it would be tacky unless you're one of those sleek kitchen no coffee pots on the counter freaks. :P

I'd check around before writing off FP fridges based on one review--I hadn't read anything about them one way or another and I read way too much of this stuff!

Just thinking, depending on the dent, could one of the auto dent-remover guys fix it? It might be worth taking a photo of it and talking to someone.

As for being magnetic, there are several types of SS and they don't all have the same properties. 300 series SS are not magnetic, but resist moisture and exposure to chemicals (acids, etc) better than some of the others, so they tend to be used in kitchen appliances and equipment. You've probably seen SS cookware advertised as "18/10" or something similar. This is 300 series stainless and the numbers denote the chromium and nickel content of the steel. Some of the higher strength stainless steels ARE magnetic, but don't hold up quite as well to some of the sources of corrosion that are common in kitchens. They are used more for equipment, aerospace, and military applications where it is critical for the material to withstand certain loads or forces. The high strength of these steels is not necessary for appliance exteriors, so the extra cost and more difficult manufacturing processes needed to use them are probably not cost effective.

I did a quick check on my stainless appliances which are from different manufacturers. The range, range hood, and refrigerator are not magnetic. The front of the dishwasher is, but the handle and inside are not.

You'll need two items.
A hair dryer and ice cubes. Heat the ding with the hair dryer, moving it side to side and then pull it away quickly and hold a ice cube on the ding.
Depending on the size of the ding, you may have to repeat several times.
No guarantees, it doesn't work every time, but can mitigate the ding so it is less noticeable.
Also, be careful not to overheat the door or you'll get a brown spot. Just enough so it is too hot to touch.
Do not attempt if you are not willing to be cautious and focused.
One other thing to consider. Check with the manufacturer and see if they might warranty the door once it's in your home. Some do some don't.
