Butcher block counter burn?

I'm considering putting butcher block countertops on either side of our range. From those folks that have bb in that location, does it burn easily if you put a hot pot on it, and if so, can you sand it out? We have laminate now, so I'm used to not putting anything hot down, but I'm curious.....just in case. Also, does a treatment like Waterlox help prevent burning?

I've set hot pans on our oiled BB for years without leaving a serious mark. (I rarely use cast iron & I think that might leave a scorch if it was really hot.) Mine are oiled with mineral oil.

Thanks! And do you find the oiled finish holds up fine? Do you cut on them? We aren't planning on using it as a cutting board all of the time, and I like the idea of oiled more than Waterlox.

Yes.. it is resolved, they gave me some money back. They promised they will start supplying all solid wood all through since my incident. You should be able to buy with confidence now. It's not veneer in the sense that it is 1/64" thin, the maple is 1/4" with 1" oak in betweem. It's still very durable. I havn't had a problem with it so far. Not that I need to talk about my fix anymore because no one else should encounter this now. It is important you use the butcherblock right away because I waited a bit too long and the store manager was being difficult with me. It took combined effort of the GW "angry mob" until I got a call from their corporate guy :) BTW love my wood counter top, the "sound" especially. This one island counter I created from the LL BB, if I didn't tell, you wouldn't know there is oak inside.

Do you know who makes those cabinets? Info on the pic says they were custom made. But you can use this picture as an inspiration picture. Start looking through your yellow pages for custom cabinet makers. Also ask friends where they got their cabinets. If you are looking at big box stores, I would say Kraft Maid from Lowe's would be a good choice. However, price out custom, there are many on here who got custom for the same price or less as big box. And do you live near an Amish area? Some on here have gotten great custom Amish cabs at great prices. Again, ask around. And if you do a search on here, lots of very happy Ikea cabinet owners. It shouldn't be hard to find what you are looking for. Also, where would I find solid surface counter tops? Lowe's sell's LG Hi-Mac and Home Depot sells Corian around here. There are other brands as well. (Joseph Corlett could list them all, I don't know them all, as I am focused on Corian myself) Again, try looking at kitchen and flooring shops in your area. You can also go to the website of any brand and they should have a dealer locater. Now Joseph will say they are all the same. Maybe they are, but all I can say is, in researching (an insane amount) LG Hi-Mac "seems" to have an awful lot of cracking issues. Corian use only their trained fabricators so maybe that's why there are less issues. Thank you so much for the great suggestion and for the photos. I would love to see how it turned out. We're doing a very similar renovation. So far our walls are alabaster and we've only purchased lower cabinets. I painted them Mindful Gray (BM). We just purchased our counter tops yesterday and they are unfinished butcher block. So now I'm panicking on what stain to use on them (our floors are Allen + Roth Russet Oak Laminate). I don't want the floors & counter tops to be too matchy and I'm considering just oiling them without staining. So many decisions!

I cut on mine and I don't worry if it's not oiled as often as it should be. It may not look as beautiful but a coat of oil can always be rubbed in if company's coming. One thing BB doesn't tolerate is standing water - keep it dry & it'll last for decades with a minimum of maintenance!

Yes, I'm hoping to get a soapstone sink and have a soapstone border around it, so the bb isn't directly abutting the sink and won't have as much water. DH isn't the best about wiping up his splashes.

My father did burn his wood counter. I don't know how he did it, I wasn't there. But he did sand it out. I have put pretty hot pans on a cutting board without a burn.

You can burn a maple bb top and I did that a few days ago by setting a hot cast iron skillet on it without realizing it was still too hot. I had a combination Beeswax/Orange oil finish on it and it still made a mark. Sanding has lightened the mark a little bit so now I just call it patina and expect it to eventually blend in with all the other marks. These include drips from soy sauce, tomato sauce, olive oil and more. They all mellow slightly over time and I do lightly sand before I reapply the oil.

If you want the counter to remain pristine, I wouldn't put it next to the stove.

I am concerned about the effect of the hot burner radiating heat toward the adjacent butcherblock. I've melted the range's indicators and dials in the past. I would not be surprised if in the future I find that there's a burn scar on the sides of the butcherblock. This is not going to stop me from using my kitchen, but I do think that I will work at keeping the heat setting within bounds.

I burned the top of my breadboard once--the pan must have been really hot from the stove.
