Hoods for European upper cabinets- 12' depth

Hi. I am trying to figure out my hood for my new kitchen. The design is done and the kitchen is on its way. The hood will be completely conceled in an upper cabinet. In theory, you wont be able to tell its a hood unless you bend down and look up. Problem is, Im having trouble finding a hood that fits because the european cabs are so shallow. My designer tells me Ill have to go custom, but Im not ready to conceed that yet (she's been wrong before....).

The interior dimensions of the cabinet the hood needs to hide in are:

116.4cm w x 56.4cm h x 29cm d or

45.83"w x 22.2" h x 11.42" d

But Im unsure if this works without a liner as I think the liner would push me over the 11.42" depth. Actually, Im sort of confused about the terminology. What does a liner do? How come it seems likw sometimes the liner is just decorative and others it seems like its the functional part?

If it matters, the hood will be right on an exterior wall and it "should" be easy to punch the venting through.

So confused... appreciate any assistance! Ive never had a hood before.

A liner protects the cabinet above from the heat and provides lighting. Are you planning on a pull out? Because you really are not going to get much if anything in the way of effective ventilation with a hood concealed only in a 12" upper. It's about capture area, and unless you have a pullout, the front of your cabinet is likely to become greasy and nasty and possibly damaged from the heat.

I've used the GE hood below in several kitchens when the aesthetic demanded something practically invisible. The pull out gives it a greater capture area and protects the front of your cabinetry.

Hi. Thanks for the comments. No, Im not planning on a pull out. That would require the hood to extend down below the cabinet (even if only 1"). If there was some sort of drop down, then pull out, I'd consider it.

Actually Im not much of a cook. I have absolutely no hood now and it hasnt really been a problem. Since we're re-doing the kitchen, I think it makes sense to put something in if only for resale value.

From your comments, it seems then I will need a liner and the matching BESt liner puts me over the depth requirement. My cabinet manufacturer does have a hood that will work, but they wont sell it to me since its not UL approved in the US.

Even with accepted diminished draw power, Im wondering what folks with European cabinets do for hoods? I guess maybe they like the exposed look and dont try to hide it?

A 12" exterior cabinet needs about 3/4" for the face and 1/2" for the back, so that leaves 10 3/4" for the inside measure, and this is about the max you are going to get. Better constructed cabs may have 3/4" backing and it us usually inset a bit so you may only have 10 1/2" inside space. That is normal. My main dish cabinet is 14" exterior measure so I have 12 1/2" usable space. But my lower cabs are wider than standard also. If you have full overlay doors, you can sort of get a bit more space by having dishes overlap the front, but then your "wall to front of door" measure will be more than 12" because the door sits on top of the front.

Distance to uppers will be 18" for us. We do not have many uppers though and have plenty of counter space with nothing above. Any higher is too high for my vertically challenged self (5'3")to reach the back of second shelf -- interior upper depth of 12" will hold all my plates/bowls/platters. I measured the widest one to make sure. We will have inset doors so had to be very specific as a 12" inset upper cabinet will not have 12" interior space, would have been more like 10 1/2-11".

joyce_6333- we almost cross posted :-) I found this thread on open shelves in GW and loved the photo you posted. mama_goose has a lovely low shelf in her kitchen. I use lots of spices regularly so my jars will never look as neat as hers. "Possible consideration" is now "very strong consideration" of lower shelves albeit with frosted glass doors. In my small kitchen, space is at a premium and this looks handy to keep oft reached for things. Thanks Joseph. I was able to find a stainless piece to cover up the gap. My only concern now is whether I need to attach a piece of wood to the back, so I can mount the hood to the wall. Is mounting it to the bottom of the cabinet enough? My husband seems to think it is fine. But I don’t want it to fall down. We initially want to mount it to both the wall and cabinet, so it has extra support.

try Ventahood or Kobe...its possibly they will have the right fit/or can make one for you.
