Please Look Under Your Range Hood...Where Are Your Lights?
Comments (18)Thank you all! Though most seem to have lights in the front, those with them in the back do not seem to have issues. Due to some unexpected budget changes due to issues beyond our control (problems with the addition added by the PO in the 80's we were not able to anticipate until the roof, ceiling and walls were opened) I am having to be a bit more creative with the budget and reallocate resources. I am going to be installing a Berta 36" drop-in gas cook top and have decided to go with a 36" hood (I know, I know, bigger is better). I don't want to skimp on the hood. I emailed Bertazzoni and they assured me that I would be okay with the 36" hood as long as I had 600 CFMs. I also checked and their hood is 19 9/32" from front-to-back (and even better, evilbunnie doesn't have problems) so I am going to make sure that I have about that distance front-to-back....See MoreCabinets arrived, PLEASE help me
Comments (14)On factory applied glazes on stock or semi custom cabinetry, you have no control over the amount of glazing applied to the cabinets. There will be many variations. That's normal with a glazed cabinetry. Some will appear darker and some lighter. Some will have more glaze and some less. They all blend together beautifully overall in a kitchen. Sample doors should only be necessary in a custom line, where more variation is normal and actual customization of the color is possible. However, the two cabinets you show appear to have different colored glazes, with one being cool and the other being warm. Are you 100% SURE that they are designated the SAME color? Look at your order. What color does the color line state you ordered? If you relied on your friend's memory of what color cabinets she ordered, her memory could have mislead you and you ordered the incorrect color. There's a big difference between "Linen with Cocoa Glaze" and "Cotton with Cocoa Glaze" or even "Linen with Chocolate Glaze" (BTW, made up example colors.) Looking at the Bertch site, it appears the Legacy line comes in an Eggshell with either a Sepia or a Brown Glaze. The custom line comes in even more variations. Perhaps the incorrect color was ordered, and the cabinet installation you admire is another color all together....See MoreLayout help - please help me plan a functional kitchen!
Comments (14)florantha - yes, I would want to protect the range from traffic more than in that last layout. The suggestions of opening up the long wall on the left are interesting, I don't think they are right for our family. We do want to keep a table in the kitchen and upon reflection, I don't really want the kitchen completely open to the family room since a little separation is nice when friends are over and the kids are watching a movie in there. I do think that the thoughts are ideas that could inspire other readers in their own planning. I am leaning toward option C (last) in the original post, but I am a little hesitant about the fridge location. I like it along the back wall because it leaves the sides of the room more open, giving more of a feeling of connection to the family room and to the outside through the window on the right wall. The room is long and my idea was to place the bulky fridge to shorten the room, not narrow it. Placing the fridge on the back wall in the corner also allows room for a bigger (deeper) fridge without interfering with traffic in the room - I'd like to maximize my fridge space without going to the expense of a large built in. But I also know that it's preferable to have the fridge on the perimeter of the kitchen. The proposed location would not drive traffice through the prep and cooking area, but perhaps it's still a bad plan? Feedback would be appreciated. For Layout C, the shallow pantry on the left side of the room is 12" cupboards, the space from there to the island is 41", the island is 41" wide, and the space from the island to the cleanup sink is 48". I've pulled the counters on the back wall so that the counters would be 30". Sorry not to have added these dimensions to the drawings....See MoreCostco - Ancona Chef Under Cabinet Hood
Comments (2)Wow; that does look like a good deal. I know there are a lot of Chinese manufacturers of hoods out there. People seem to have opinions about the origin of manufacture. I'm not sure I know enough about such generalizations to hazard an opinion about it. I would strongly suggest posting this on the appliances forum; there are many very knowledgeable ventilation experts who reside over there. Costco is famous for its warrantee of course. I might ask them what they cover for this; probably the whole shebang, but still I'd ask. They won't fix it if necessary or anything; just take it all back. Fwiw the quietest way to go is to rig something up with the fan distant from the kitchen, inline in the attic. This was important to me but obviously we all have different issues. Again, read all about it all and ask over at the appliances forum.... Also, I might call Costco and ask if they can determine who makes the fan itself. It would be helpful to know the manufacturer of that if possible....See MoreD L
