Wooden countertop for kitchen island, what do you think

My husband and I just bought a mid-century modern house and are stripping it down to its basic form. A big part of the remodel is the kitchen, which we're opening up to the living room. So the big question right now is what type of wood we should use to create a long island. We love the look of wood, but are trying to find something that is durable and not too expensive. Have been reading about sapele, which seems like an interesting option though we haven't priced it out. Ideally we'd like to do a butcher block style. Any thoughts?

Or do you think that wood's a bad idea in terms of maintenance? We will have a much tougher material in the back countertop, where all of the appliances will be. This wood counter is both for casual eating/family hang-out & light food prep.

Here's a link to get a taste of the kitchens that are inspiring our design: http://mowerymarsh.blogspot.com/2010/06/double-island-counters.html
