Differences: Custom vs. Semi Custom/Stock Cabinets?
Comments (11)We got the same type of quote for our kitchen. There is a $10K difference between custom and semi-custom. This was for an apples to apples comparison: same hinges, same thickness of plywood in bases, same number of drawers, same drawer slides. I think we'll go with the semi-custom. Stock cabinets come in sizes that are multiples of 3", 9", 12", 15"...60", etc. When your kitchen has an inch or two space, they have matching spacers that fill in those spaces and look like extensions on the cabinets. The factor I'm concerned about it the color of the stain. Most semi/custom stock will stain certain colors with or without glazes. If you want a certain stain color, they may not be as flexible as your custom cabinet guy. Another factor in durability is how long the shelf run is and how thick it is. Without good support, a long run will sag in the short term; a thinner shelf sags sooner. I will probably order a door from each before I make my decision. I ordered one door awhile back; when it got here, I realized the cherry wood the cabinet company was using wasn't top quality. A great installer with an eye for detail is what makes ordinary cabinets shine. My son just had a bottom of the line series installed. We had them put plywood in the bottom of the sink base instead of particle board. They look high end because they go to the ceiling, there is a nice crown molding up there, and he doesn't have low end knobs. They are just a builder grade cabinet with a dark stain over birch. They won't last as long, but he doesn't need them to. My builder cabinets I have now are 20yo and are just starting to show their wear. The funny thing is that my sister who is married to a contractor and have built their own houses with custom cabinets thought I had a custom job. No, I just had an installer who takes pride in his work, cabinets that went up to the ceiling, and plywood panels installed on unfinished sides. I guess my conclusion is that I'd go with the customized in-stock cabinets and save the $$$....See MoreFavorite custom or semi-custom white painted wood cabinets
Comments (2)You'll probably get a better response to this over on the discussions side. It gets more traffic. I'm afraid I can't help you, I used a custom cabmaker in Penn Yan, NY. If you're close to Penn Yan, though (like just south of the border), it was Ray Hoover at Whispering Pines Woodcraft. He was wonderful....See MoreFinish on Custom vs. Semi Custom Cabs
Comments (0)Ok, so I've started to get cabinet quotes. I'm doing white painted (no glaze) cabinets. I live in CA where we can no longer use oil based paint. So, I have the option to go with custom, but they would have to be painted with latex with a water based polyuthernathne (sp???) on top. So my question is how long would I expect to have the custom cabinet paint finish last??? We are not neat freaks but do have white latex painted cabinets in the office and laundry room that seem to hold up fine. Of course they don't get the use the kitchen would....See MoreAmish Built Custom Cabinetry v. Semi Custom Reputable Contractor
Comments (3)I don't think you can paint ALL Amish with such a broad brush, at least not in Maryland. We have a lot of Mennonites in my area as well and most are hard working and wonderful people. Unfortunately there are plenty of puppy mill people in the community at large so I don't think it's only an Amish problem. I've recently donated to and am on a foster list for a group trying to save over 200 dogs taken from a non Amish woman out West who was involved in a puppy mill producing herding breeds like my two dogs. Having said that, it's like anything, you have good and talented craftsmen/women in their communities and you have not so good ones. I would ask for references to see any cabinets produced by the people you are considering. My parents had Amish made cherry kitchen cabinets installed over 30 years ago and they still look wonderful today. I've also seen furniture pieces made by some craftsmen in my area that are crudely made and rough to the touch with very poor staining on them. So just like anything, you will want to see their work to determine if they are truly an artist and good at what they do, or just able to create utilitarian but not very attractive cabinets. I wouldn't go to anyone to construct cabinets or anything else for that matter, that wasn't what I consider a decent human being. But I don't think you can say ALL Amish are puppy mill operators. It's too bad for the Amish in general that they have some bad apples in the bunch, it gives those who are honest hard working people a bad name. Kat :)...See MoreRelated Professionals
