Ward's Cabinets? Anyone have them?
Comments (7)It is sad but after 3+ years I am still PLANNING! Translation: My kitchen budget keeps getting used for other things. At the time I really did not think of the quality I saw as below the Medallion. Maybe the price was just below Medallion? I think Medallion's finishes are ranked pretty high here for their price thought. Right after that I realized that Medallion was the same as Schuler which is sold at Lowes so I went that way. I looked at Kraftmaid as well and then ended up on the custom track and back to frameless. IKEA is still pulling at me because I can order custom doors and get the exact look I want for a whole lot less money. I also have an IKEA right in town. My lack of DIY skills is holding me back a bit. Maybe they sell Ward's around here because it is made right next door to me in Alabama? I found another dealer just north of Atlanta but it seems like a very unknown company even around here. I don't know if I mentioned this but other places and contractors went off on their rant about frameless not being as sturdy as face frame and all that. There is a thread going around here now about that. Not true but be prepared to listen to some of that....See MoreHave your painted cabinets chipped & how long have you had them?
Comments (1)My Plain & Fancy cabinets are 10 now. Factory spray painted. This Old House did a show on P&F focusing on the painted surface which seems to be especially durable. On the show they were installing white cabinets. Mine are a butter color. The only areas of wear is on the edge and knob of the garbage pull out and on the handle of the dishwasher -- I had purchased a handle from Lee Valley and sent it to them for spray painting. This is wear and it's the type people pay to get on painted furniture. No chipping whatsoever and no separation in the seams either. We are in upstate NY so we have similar temperature extremes as New England. No idea if P&F has changed their manufacturing in the last few years. There was a poster on here with a huge rant on them but I've been very happy with the quality. Kompy, who's a KD, did a gorgeous white kitchen a year or so ago with P&F. You might consult her as well if they interest you....See MoreBamboo Kitchen Cabinets - anyone have them?
Comments (12)M- Okay. (long breath drawn in)... FIRST and foremost, has your local cabinet maker worked with bamboo before???If so, please go see his work in real life. (not just photos). If not, you might want to rethink this. With this kind of money, you do not want to be somebody's guinea pig. Next, he will probably order the bamboo panels from plyboo. www.plyboo.com On their site you will see the various choices, natural vs. amber color, edge grain vs. flat grain. jdayo and I have amber edge grain - i will post photos just as soon as i can get electrician out of my space! with flat grain you will see more of the bulky knots. With edge grain you will get a narrower grain and you will also get that really cool edge detail on the sides of your doors and drawer fronts. Also, make sure you have a very good carpenter to install. when you cut in to the bamboo (for trim, lightrail, etc) it can splinter really easily. you have do do it VERY carefully, very slowly, and with masking tape across to reduce any chance of splintering. i learned this the hard way. You also have to ask your installer to make sure that the grain matches up , say, if you have a set of three drawers on top of each other. they might not think of that. (notice to the left of jdayo's freezer). Rift cut oak is really pretty! Henrybuilt uses it as well as bamboo, and for some reason their bamboo cabs are cheaper! do a search on this site for "henrybuilt kitchen " - you'll see another similar bamboo look. one more thing, make sure your guy orders a big enough batch for you job, including unexpected extras. there is no color stain on the product, the amber is naturally carmelized, and you can end up with lighter or darker batches. GOOD LUCK! LC...See MoreBamboo cabinets uncarmelized, unstained - anyone have them?
Comments (0)After much debate and research and help from some Garden Web-bers, we have decided to go with our initial idea and get bamboo cabinets made by a local cabinet maker. The piece he gave us which is sitting in our kitchen is uncarmelized - it's the straight grain, not the vertical (I think I'm using the language right, but always get confused because it seems counter-intuitive to me...). Anyway, it's minimal grain...In tone, it's almost like a very light, blond-white wood - like maybe birch that's not been stained. We love it! We also think it may help with our dark kitchen - wood ceiling and floor, not a lot of light from outside. For that reason, we had been considering painted white cabinets but just really wanted bamboo... Last night at around midnight I suddenly freaked out and became concerned that it would look too unfinished, or too -I don't know - 50's? (It's true that I am looking for a very sleek, contemporary look, but 50's - not so much.) Anyway, if anyone has comments or has used bamboo uncarmelized and unstained. I'd love some input. Thanks as always - we're getting there - one decision at a time :)....See Moregeomeg
