Anyone have bamboo flooring in kitchen? Pics?
Comments (8)As a kitchen floor, I find our bamboo easy to care for. My floor gets its fair share of drips and spills which I usually hit with a paper towel or a dish towel headed for the laundry. Little drips go away by themselves eventually if I don't get to them. Every blue moon or so I get out the Bona, spray, wipe, good. The biggest maintenance is the same as all our floors - sweeping/vacuuming up the animal fur. Where does it all come from?! Bamboo is somewhat pricey. Don't skimp by going with Cheap-floors-are-us, because cheap bamboo floors come back to bite you. As palimpsest said, there are different ways to make it and it's really important that you get the kind she mentioned, carbonized strand bamboo. EcoTimber is a safe bet and there was one other that I can't remember the name of right off - Teragren? I think that's it....See MorePaperstone countertops-anyone out there have them and love them?
Comments (3)Wow, This is the first time I've heard of paperstone. I googled it and found so many rave reviews! I went with leathered black granite in my kitchen as an alternative to soapstone but I would have absolutely considered this if I'd known about it. For others that aren't familiar: From http://www.3luxe.com/best_ofs/Countertops/PaperStone "Certified by both the Forest Stewardship council and the Rainforest Alliance, PaperStone reuses cardboard and other paper products to make durable, water-resistant countertops. But PaperStone is much tougher than its name sounds. The material in PaperStone originally was used to make outdoor skateboard ramps, so these countertops are more than prepared to meet the demands of the most enthusiastic cooks. Unlike other composite countertops, PaperStone Certified is made with 100% post-consumer recycled paper that is bonded not with a non-petroleum based resin but a water-based formula made from liquid cashew nut shells. Available in five different thicknesses and seven rich colors (chocolate, concrete grey, obsidian, straw, indigo, plum and grass), this "Best Of" is heat resistant up to 350 degrees and is so stain resistant, it is often used in chemical laboratory settings and commercial food kitchens. If you like a lustrous soapstone look or the feel of wood, PaperStone is a fabulous, eco-conscious choice." Comments (17)To repeat what others have said, for painted doors, MDF is certainly the choice for the center panel of an otherwise solid wood door, as it does not expand and contract as much as solid wood so you minimize the cracks at the joints. The center panel of a door is always loose - not glued in place - to allow for this movement. We did not want even minimal cracking on all our doors, so we went with solid MDF. They are made on a computerized CNC router machine to exact specifications and are one piece. So we went with solid MDF doors on plywood carcasses. The BLUM hinges position in the doors and expand when the little hinge is pressed down - no 'fasteners' per-se. Not sure how the drawer fronts are fastened to the drawer boxes honestly, but of course the pulls go all the way through to the inside so no force is on the MDF panels. In the Toronto area, all 'custom' cabinet makers construct their own carcasses and order doors from Cut Rite doors in Waterloo. They make solid and MDF doors of all description to whatever measurement you want. Then the cabinet maker does the finishing, typically in Benjamin Moore paint for colors or of course stains. So the only difference between one cabinet maker and another is the construction of the carcasses, the quality of finishing and installation and of course price. We're very happy with ours. Ended up less expensive than going with 'semi-custom' from Home Depot, Lowes etc....See MoreBamboo cabinets uncarmelized, unstained - anyone have them?
Comments (0)After much debate and research and help from some Garden Web-bers, we have decided to go with our initial idea and get bamboo cabinets made by a local cabinet maker. The piece he gave us which is sitting in our kitchen is uncarmelized - it's the straight grain, not the vertical (I think I'm using the language right, but always get confused because it seems counter-intuitive to me...). Anyway, it's minimal grain...In tone, it's almost like a very light, blond-white wood - like maybe birch that's not been stained. We love it! We also think it may help with our dark kitchen - wood ceiling and floor, not a lot of light from outside. For that reason, we had been considering painted white cabinets but just really wanted bamboo... Last night at around midnight I suddenly freaked out and became concerned that it would look too unfinished, or too -I don't know - 50's? (It's true that I am looking for a very sleek, contemporary look, but 50's - not so much.) Anyway, if anyone has comments or has used bamboo uncarmelized and unstained. I'd love some input. Thanks as always - we're getting there - one decision at a time :)....See More- 15 years ago
