We want to replace the original cabinets, that's why we are looking for recommendations of good manufactured or custom cabinet makers in the area.

I think Jacob is actually in Oxford, PA. But I think it is still just a couple hours from her, so it really isn't htat big of a deal. I know lots of people who would drive a couple hours to get what they wanted for their kitchen cabinets. It is not like it is something you would do everyday, afterall. Jumpilotmdm, I believe the OP said she was comparing American Woodmark to Jacob, not Woodmode. American Woodmark is a HD line that I would expect would be cheaper than Jacob's cabs. Although, I am not sure if these were really comparable as it appears that Jacob might have been including things that were not in the American Woodmark quote. In all fairness, quality can come from many sources, as does junk. I am sure their are people (Amish or English) who produce both. In my experience, I love dealing with the craftsman himself thoughout my process. That was something that a manufactured cab company couldn't give me.

We just moved back into our house in Chevy Chase, MD after a long renovation. We bought custom cabinets for the kitchen, bath vanities, and bookcases and cabinets for the living and dining rooms. The cabinets were custom Amish cabinets and the kitchen designer/cabinetmaker rep is Laura McGinnis in Arlington, VA. Laura was great and the cabinets are gorgeous. We went with white painted cabinets with inset doors in the kitchen and baths, and cherry cabinets in living/dining rooms. We had a lot of difficult angles and spaces and everything was just right. We're using building in Oxford Twp. and our interior designer, based out of the Troy area hooked us up with Distinctive Designs in Leonard. We didn't have them make our kitchen cabinets, but they made two curved stairs in our rotunda, all the interior custom millwork, interior door installation, coffered ceiling in our great room, ceiling detail in our dining room, as well as two cabinet built-ins in complex areas. I'm an amateur woodworker and can attest to the quality of their construction, but their service and amicability goes above and beyond what I was expecting. They do design work, but I don't have experience with their kitchen designs if they offer it. I would still recommend giving them a call if you want some quality products. I have a build blog if you want to take a look at the things they did for us. We went with white painted cabinets made by Omega for our kitchen, so be aware of the issues of painted cabinets on wood. Even Omega has a disclaimer about wood movement and paint lines opening up so depending on the style of doors you're looking for, whether it's factory made or locally constructed, you'll be dealing with the laws of nature.
