Comments (9)Hi Kat--what a pretty room you have! I'm anxious to see what kind of advice you get, because I'm planning a remodel that involves adding another west-facing window to an already super-bright kitchen. The pictures you shared immediately reminded me of this website, because I'm always amazed at how much light seems to bounce around these rooms. I don't know if they all have skylights? Or is it the white walls? But they do mostly have painted cabinets. Maybe a little darker in value, but still not extra-saturated. Light, but muted... if that makes sense, as opposed to your current cabinets, which I would call light and bright. Anyway, I just wanted to share these pretty pictures, maybe you'll find some inspiration in them. Oh, and the only advice I could offer is to have your granite honed instead of polished, so it won't glare you to death. :) Good luck, I hope you'll share your progress! Comments (4)I was looking at WilsonArt Rustic Slate and Formica Basalt Slate, both of which are quite dark. However, I just discovered that Nemavar has the Greenguard certification for indoor air quality (low VOC admissions) so I just ordered some samples from them called VOUS Metal (reminds me of the Basalt slate), Veta shadows, black lodestone and a few others - they are all blackish/dark grey. My current laminate, which is white w/some grey flecks has been here 12 years and has not yellowed at all. I don't know what brand it is. I actually just got an email back from the company I am probably going to get my countertops from and he said that quartz may fade slightly, but usually only if it is in direct sunlight, like on an outdoor grill area. He said it should not be a problem in my kitchen. It also looks like the lighter colors have more of a chance of fading than the darker colors (I thought the opposite would be true). I think I answered my own question. :)...See MoreBold Tile, Sunlight Filled Kitchen
Comments (85)So very sorry to hear that your dear mom never saw the completion of your kitchen here on this earth but know that she is happily smiling down on you from heaven. I agree with Bee, your mom will wink at you from time to time. I lost my dearest friend, my mother, nine years ago. I miss her dearly but she still sends me a wink from time to time. Your kitchen is absolutely gorgeous. I love your home, it is so very charming. I lam so fond of a one story home especially as I get older. Our main home is two stories and more steps than I care for. Our other home is a one story that I love. Unfortunately hubby has to have garages and has two huge garages at our country home and there is no room for additional garage space in our other house. I will definitely return to this post over and over again for inspiration. I can't imagine a lovelier addition. Best of luck to you and your DH!!!...See MoreMy Succulents won't be getting any more direct sunlight :O
Comments (27)Paul and Christina I like your thinking! :-) Paul, the common/shared balcony does get some weather but not with the same force or as much rain as mine. I've never noticed a power outlet on the shared balcony, but I wouldn't use it anyway because we have a lot of people here that have absolutely no idea of safety. We have another balcony directly above ours the same size as ours, so there is better shelter from the elements. My balcony also has a small balcony above, the same size as mine. Oh my goodness! I have the same sort of shelving in my room, of the first image from your link lol. I bought expensive ones so they can hold more weight than I could ever manage. I did put the small one outside for a short while but it started developing surface rust pretty quickly. But I've noticed recently much cheaper ones of the same design. What type of store is the BBS? I wouldn't like to tie or even chain anything from the balcony fence above and we have asked permission to get hooks for hanging plants, I even offered to pay to get them to get professionally done, a firm no :-( By the way, I have often used zip ties with far greater success than even strong wire, and cheap enough to replace often if needed. Christina, I love the lockable wheels thought! Then I could even take them from the shared balcony to mine and vice versa. And even inside if needed. Just had a thought! We have a walkway across to the next building/wing of the complex, that I've noticed gets full sun for quite a few hours in the middle of the day. I also have a few trusted friends on my floor who's balconys face north so should get the hottest sun for many hours. So...... cheap shelving with wheels, maybe 2 if needed. Roll the plants all over the place to get the best conditions available for any season lol. Equals - I may be able to keep and add to my Succulents after all!!! Woooo hooooooo :-D Also very spoilt plants lol. Also equals a very long post. Sorry guys. But thank you so much!!!!...See MoreRelated Professionals
